    Time: 2230 PDT

Location: Van Nuys Area of Los Angeles

    Departments: LAFD, LAPD

Description:On Friday, April 11, 2008 at 10:34 PM, 8 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 2 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 1 Arson Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 1 EMS Battalion Captain, 3 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, DWP, DOT and LAPD, all under the direction of Battalion Chief James Cairns, responded to the Greater Alarm Structure Fire located at 15222 W. Stagg St. in the Van Nuys area.

A 9-1-1 cell phone caller driving through the intersection notified the OCD Dispatch Center that a large warehouse was "full of fire." Responding LAFD resources communicated that there was indeed a very large loom up. The first arriving Light Force on scene found a large one story, 60 foot by 150 foot commercial warehouse building, showing heavy smoke and fire through the roof. Additional companies were requested. The commercial building housed three very large occupancies.

Companies quickly initiated the placement of handlines while their roof top complement 's strong ventilation efforts, held the fire to the center occupancy, a furniture refinishing business. Division walls, focused interior firefighting and excellent truck work kept damage to the auto body shop and the movie prop storage to a minimum.

Sixty Firefighters took approximately 27 minutes to bring the late night blaze to a knockdown. No injuries were reported. The cause was determined to be refinishing materials that self combusted. The dollar loss estimate is undetermined at this time.

  5. Per media on the 10 o'clock news tonight...

Incident started with an explosion in an underground vault blowing a DWP manhole cover over 10 feet from the manhole. As units were arriving, a 2nd vault exploded causing another manhole to blow. Engine 95 arrivedas part of the assignment and was tasked to investigate smoke from an business building near the 2 vaults. It appears that as the members of Engine Co 95 were attempting to open an electrical vault within the building when it exploded. The investigation is continuing at this time. Engine 95 has not been moved and is within the investigation scene (2215 PDT).

May God watch over the Fallen's soul. Prayers and condolences to their family.

Poway's firefighters sat outside the rural neighborhood of High Valley as it burned in last year's Witch Creek fire because they were ordered to stay out by the city manager.

The community lost 28 of 215 homes, and residents accused the Poway Fire Department of abandoning them.

After a story appeared in The San Diego Union-Tribune last week, detailing the homeowners' anger, two firefighters agreed to break their silence and speak out.

  8. Its California, did you REALLY expect any different?

Medic, Medic....Medic needed for stab wound to back in California :blink: Goose, while I agree there are some ultra liberal thinkers in this fine state that hate anything of authority. I believe for the most part you'll find these kind of people in every state in the union. However Goose, I have to disagree with the expectation that everyone in that area (about 100 miles from me) feels this way. This is the same area where the the memorial service for the 5 USFS Firefighters in October 2006 was held. That procession was approximately 2 miles long, with 5,000 people in attendance. And the public came out in force in donations and other signs of grief for them and their families. This guy's attitude for the most part is few and far between, thank God.

  12. If you look at the protocol for incident managment, it defines how many chief officers are recommended at different levels.

In years past in the FDNY, you did not have an RUL, safety officer, safety battalion, and rescue balltaion respond to every second alarm. There are legitimate reasons for this level of supervision. They are supervising different aspects of the fire. We have learned over time this is the best way to supervise a fire scene.

BigLew as was said makes some great points. Here's a thought to ponder....

Chiefs are needed for the following positions on any greater alarms fire...

    I.C.

    Ops

    Safety

others may be needed as Ops and Safety are broken down into smaller divisions. So who's to say what is too many or not enough.
