  3. Olympic National Park firefighter Andrew Palmer was killed fighting a fire in northern California Friday.

Eighteen year old Palmer, a National Park Service firefighter, was assigned to the Eagle Fire on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The investigation into what happened continues.

Mike Odle of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News Friday night that Palmer "suffered injuries from what sounds like an incident with a tree." Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding Palmer's death.

  4. Great shots, Mike. Thanks for sharing. While I love all apparatus, the difference between builders in the U.S. such as Pierce, E-One and KME and those in Europe, Austalia and New Zealand such as Dennis, Volvo and Iveco is remarkable. I really wish more Diecast companies would produce those type of models.

  5. A great day in San Diego. I saw many friends. I followed part of the run for most of the day. Check my PhotoBucket album Duane's 2008 San Diego Burn Run Album for other photos. I have the apparatus photos loaded, and will have the run photos loaded either tomorrow or Monday.

For those who don't know what this event is all about, The Burn Run and Fire Expo benefits the San Diego Burn Institute and raises funds for their Camp Beyond the Scars, a camp for child and adolescent burn survivors. The Institute, along with the FireFighter's Advisory Council to the Burn Institute (F.F.A.C.B.I.) raises funds through t-shirt sales and other fund raisers. This event was started in the early 90's in conjunction with a Padres game at Qualcomm Stadium. You could go to the Expo during the day, and buy tickets as a fundraiser for the Institute to the game. A pregame ceremony would honor the firefighters, with a few from each department lining the baselines. But now the Padres are in Petco, but the Expo is still an all day event.

  7. President Bush set to survey California wildfires

By JULIANA BARBASSA - Associated Press Writer

Published 12:15 pm PDT Thursday, July 17, 2008

President Bush was set to visit Northern California on Thursday to get a first-hand look at the wildfires that have ravaged hundreds of square miles and strained the state's firefighting resources.

The president was expected to travel to Redding to get a briefing on the wildfires, then take an aerial tour to survey fire damage in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, according to White House officials. Bush also plans to attend a private Republican fundraising event in Napa.

Firefighters continue to battle dozens of blazes around the state, many sparked by a massive lightning storm three weeks ago. More than 2,000 wildfires have burned nearly 1,400 square miles since June 21.

  9. If I recall correctly, he was released from prison. As far as his being ill, he is positive for Hep C. I think at one time after his release he looked at running for a political office. I for one believe that he is a great man and was well before his time. I find it difficult to understand how it is OK to put an animal down when terminally ill, but not a person. Maybe one day we as a society will understand that he was truely helping people.

    Just my opinion!!!

    Chris

Chris, I agree with you. The American people have to understand that death is a part of life. Don't embrace it, but understand that living doesn't necessarily constitute a "quality" of life...

I posted the photo tongue in cheek due to the "stigma" associated with the name...

  10. The game should have been over in the bottom of the 11th when Young hit that ball up the middle into center field and Navarro was thrown out at the plate. If you watched the replay he was safe at home. The Throw was there in time but the tag was late. But in any event it was a very good game.

Rock, you are absolutely dead on. The umpiring in the game is currently pathetic. It seems they won't take the time to get the call right. It's like they determine if the ball is there in time, then the runner's out. They're too concentrated on their wildly exaggerated gestures in calling the runner/batter out or safe....

  11. The moderating team feels that too many of these types of threads just end up with bashing or personal attacks and the thread ends up being closed anyway. This undermines the mission of this site to build camaraderie and serve the public safety community with information and training opportunities. This was well thought out and discussed at length by the team. Thank you for your opinion, but because of the above reason the decision was made.

    Los Angeles Times

As flames swirled toward their family homestead, the Curtis brothers figured they'd get no help and had no choice: The only way to hold on to their 55-acre compound would be to fight fire with fire.

In the end, the controlled burn they set helped save the homes on their beloved Apple Pie Ridge -- but not without major consequences.

Outraged authorities arrested Ross Curtis, 48, on Friday on suspicion of illegally setting a backfire after disobeying official orders to stop.

  13. On June 20th, a major thunderstorm cell moved over Northern California, starting over 1400 fires from dry lightning strikes. Almost 3 weeks later, while a majority have been contained, over 300 of those fires are still out of control. Here's some stats from Cal Fire (Formerly California Department of Forestry and Fire):

Statewide Fire Overview - Lightning Series

Current Situation: Firefighters continue to make progress in containing wildfires throughout California. To date over fourteen hundred fires have been contained due to the diligent and endless work of firefighters from not only California, but throughout the nation. Last night winds picked up causing a dramatic increase in fire behavior and increased evacuations on many fires. Red Flag Warnings have been issued and will take effect this afternoon for high daytime temperatures, low relative humidity with poor overnight recovery, and locally breezy conditions. The Warnings extend primarily along the coastal range from San Benito County north to the Oregon border and will remain in effect through Wednesday evening. The priority of firefighting is for the protection of life, property and natural resources.
