Date: 06/18/08 Time: 1135 (about) Location: Hudson River south of Croton Point, area of Ossining Frequency: multiple local, MAR16 Units Operating: Ossining FD, Haverstraw FD, Rockland SO Marine, WCPD Marine and Air, plus others I'm sure I missed. Description Of Incident: 18 foot boat sinking, six people in the water. WCPD and OFD responded and rescued the six boaters and began dewatering ops. No reported injuries. Writer: VelcroMedic1987

As much as I disagreed with Jeanine Pirro's approach to running the DA's office we can't really blame her or her office for "not being interested". The DA's Office prosecutes those arrested for a crime. Since nobody was arrested, who exactly was she supposed to prosecute? The Pleasantville PD and County PD are probably still investigating but its unfortuately a cold case. RIP, Tom. Condolences to the family and extended family.

I've hosted a few websites of my own over the years and can attest to the costs involved. None of them were as comprehensive as Seth's and didn't require the bandwidth consumed by this site and the others. As far as making donations, do what you feel is right. If you have the wherewithal and want to support the site, do so. If you don't, nobody should criticize you and nobody will even know if you did or didn't. It doesn't have to be public or debated.

I doubt very much that any of the Ops people were in the departure lounge especially if it was packed. TSA or airline people being rude is part of the job description. You are right, they are not prepared to evacuate the terminal in an emergnecy. But try getting the Rye Fire Inspector into a county building or get the county "fire inspector" over there. Lotsa luck

I doubt he has any of the qualifications to do the job but he got himself elected and bought a spiffy uniform for all the pictures taken when he accepted donations from people. He could not have taken all the courses required of a real fire officer and he sure didn't have any experience. How many people are in that FD anyway? No board? Nobody to look over his shoulder? Come on?! This is crap - it gives the whole service a black eye and bad name. I hope they throw his crooked a$$ in jail! Disgraceful. Anyone know why he's on a leave of absence from FDNY EMS?

Wow, this is great. Tthoughtful, rational discussion about tactics in the industry and not how can I get MORE lights jammed into the grill of my 93 Toyota! You and Res6cue are so right! This isn't about the toys its about the talent! The one other point I'd like to make is the necessity of discussing the operation with the EMS provider responsible for the patient. And I don't mean that you're a CFR and AVET qualified hero. I mean the EMT or paramedic that's going to be in the ambulance all the way to the hospital. Discuss the urgency, discuss the best means of removing the victim from the car, discuss what injuries are likely and how best to treat during the extrication. That 30 second or 1 minute exchange can mean a lot if you cut 20-30 minutes off the extrication time! I wish I had a nickel for every time I said, let's just take the door off and remove the victim only to be told "no, we're going to take the whole roof and both doors off". The victim could have been out with simply the door off, but noooooooo.... Tell you what, you want to cut up the car - do it after I leave with the patient! Good topic, guys! Thanks.

Considering the frequencies have been open source material, available readily through countless sources, I hardly think anyone is violating any type of operational security. And, obviously the State Police isn't too concerned about it either because they've made no effort to change their radio frequencies or system in the years since 9/11. Operational Security is a valid concern and I agree that it should be maintained but this has always been open source material.

Troop K car-to-car is 154.665 and they operate on a true duplex system with car to station on the 154.920 and station to car on 155.505 making it difficult to monitor both sides of the conversation. Troop T uses 453.425 in our area. The 453.525 is north of us on the T-Way.

Date: 10/10/06 Time: 09:10 AM Location: Mahopac National Bank (Brewster) Frequency: 155.505, 155.310 Units Operating: State Police, PCSO, West Co PD, numerous local agencies. Description Of Incident: Male walked into bank shortly after opening and announced robbery. Fled with an unknown amount of cash and was sighted on Route 22 by SP later. Not exactly correct. Plain language is the national standard for interagency or interdisciplinary communications in mutual aid and interagency operations. If an agency is communicating internally it can continue to use codes. For example, the FDNY can continue to use its codes on a day to day basis but when they respond to another jurisdiction or in the unlikely event that outside mutual aid is summoned to the city, plain English is to be used. WHen the FDNY communicates with other city departments (Building, OEM, PD, Port Authority, MTA, Con Ed) they use plain English not codes. If we're talking about brevity, let's start training people to SHUT UP on the radio! There's no need to recap an entire incident on the radio. "Return all apparatus" or "returning to quarters" should suffice. If more info is required, use the phone at the station. The other problem with universal or national codes is that there are profound differences in the needs of the fire service, police, and EMS. Are we going to have a 10-103 for a car fire, 10-104 for house fire, 10-155 for haz-mat, 10-234 for a burglary in progress and 10-235 for past burglary and a 10-401 for an allergic reaction, 10-402 for car accident, etc. etc. etc. etc. ? Who's gonna remember all that??? You said it yourself, plain English is just that. If someone starts using slang or worse, deal with the INDIVIDUAL - don't change the system because of one or two people who just don't get it! 10-4?

Don't take it personally, I hear both sides of the argument all day long. I don't think NIMS is a waste but I do think making almost everybody in the Country learn about it is a waste... I can't take a Nitro, it reacts with my Viagra!

Most classroom presentations are better than sitting in front of a computer that you can't ask questions to or interact with. You also learn from other participants in a classroom - you can't do that with a computer. Don't forget, training is not the ONLY requirement for compliance!

We're only as good as our training and experience - it's pathetic that ANY training courses need to be cancelled for inadequate enrollment!

A lot of it is common sense. If you're at any kind of work related function or you're in uniform (including social ones like installation dinners, etc.), I would use their title/rank. If you run into your Captain at the mall, use his first name. If you introduce your girlfriend to your Chief, use his name and title - "this is my Chief, Bob". If you're out for beers together, use their name. Believe me, if they want you to address them a certain way, they'll tell you!!! If you're courteous at all times and professional in uniiform/at work, you should have no problems! My two cents.

You don't need to retake ICS if you took the 100 or 200 previously. If it was the old OFPC fireground ICS, the objectives are different from the national training curriculum (that predates NIMS) and you should take it. I gotta say that if you took the course 10 years ago and don't really use ICS on a daily basis, a refresher isn't such a bad idea! Every level of ICS (100, 200, 300, 400) is based on the same principles but the courses all vary in their focus. The 400 is geared for major incidents and command staff (Commissioners, Chiefs, Department Heads), the 300 focuses on developing a plan for extended operations, the 200 is about basic concepts and initial ICS and the 100 is just an orientation. They're all different! Maybe the "old ICS class" covers day to day stuff but we very seldom actually apply the concepts in it and what about the NON-day to day stuff? Tornados, Microbursts, larger fires/haz-mats, MCI's, etc.???? We're not all that well prepared and practiced when it comes to using ICS!!! I've been to plenty of incidents where we're supposedly doing ICS and nobody has a freakin' idea of where people are or what they're doing!!!

1 - NIMS and ICS weren't used in Louisiana, that was a MAJOR part of the problem! Another big part of the problem was the politics but that's another topic. 2 - NIMS is NOT another ICS course. ICS is only the way NIMS requires us to manage incidents. The FEMA Independent Study (Independent Study = IS, not ICS) Course on NIMS Awareness is IS-700. The ICS course structure is I-100, 200, 300, and 400. The ICS training curriculum ends in the 400's with specialty position training. 3 - To be NIMS compliant, we have to do more than just take this training. There are several other sections of NIMS besides "command and management" where ICS lives. 4 - If ICS is such crap, why did the FDNY develop two incident management teams and send them out west to work with wildfire teams at wildfires?
