  1. I knew that Jacobi was the only hospital in the area (maybe even the world) with almost every type of antivenom avail because of their proximity to the BXZoo, but I never did think about using the chopper to fly someone there from an outlying area! Great post, greater idea, patient will probly be happy to live even with the Helo bill!!!!!
  2. a: Very easily (broad side)..going too fast would be one of the easiest ways...mis-communication in the intersection between the two units...I thought you said "go". b: The original post sts they were both responding to separate incidents. c: Accidents happen...unfortunately this was 2 emergency vehicles, glad everyone was okay and the ladder did not roll over cause as we saw in Chicago, it ain't that hard for a vehicle to be broad-sided in the right spot and someone end up badly injured or even dead!
  3. I worked at Empress from March 2000 to September 2004 or something like that. I currently work at Yonkers PD/FD Dispatch/911 Empress shields: 735 and 123 (when became a dispatcher) Main partners: x901, 504, 119 Units: Mostly Tac....but since I couldn't drive at Empress for a while cause of tickets!!! I usually was chauffered around from job to job by x901. Tac 6, Sundays, until unit was removed from schedule! Tac 1 and 3 Wednesdays for a long time! Chair 1 Friday overnights with long time dispatcher Mike Cruz...yes I was ole's replacement!!!!! Chair 1 Sunday overnights with an array of characters. Most miss: Tac 3 Wednesday's with Leah Vasquez...we used to get all the jobs! (sorry Dave) Would I go back: No, probably not...but you never know!
  4. I'm sorry but if it is a Countywide system I do like the way Dutchess numbers the units. Cause then you know what dept it belongs to without having to search through memory to deeply. Here in Westchester if Engine 79 told 60 control that they were responding, I would not and do not have any idea of what vicinity that would be in. However in a city where there is only one agency on the frequency than it makes sense to number them sequentially...and you can start from 1 if you would like, or 303 in my case. But every knows when you hear Yonkers to Engine 303 or vice versa where the call might be!
  5. No, just don't forget to bring some to the dispatchers!!!!!!!!!!! Insurance is covering the rest...and insurance agents don't drink, right?
  6. I understand that the term, "RED FLASH" is used to indicate that only emergency/priority transmissions (i.e. radio silence {10-40 YPD}) is in effect, along the NYS Thruway system. I have heard it used on a number of occasions...including jumper up/down TZB, fatal accident invol Tpr Ambrose in Yks., pursuit with suspect tossing drugs out of window on SB I-87 in Westchester County. Where does the term come from? It seems a bit unusual in itself... Any info would be appreciated.
  7. Okay, maybe in a place far far away from a Trauma Center waiting is not so bad, but why not get on the move and meet them on the way? I mean, if an LZ can be coordinated on in which both units can meet safely...otherwise I am not big on sitting and waiting! Unfortunately if the patient dies and the ambulance was on scene awaiting the helocopter someone may have a bone to pick or lawsuit to settle. At least you got them to definitive care and to an MD and don't have to argue as to why you were hanging out at the scene...just my opinion though.
  8. A great view for one...j/k On a serious note, air ambulances are used for non emergency transportation also whether it be helo's or planes. Sometimes it is more logical for a helo to be called especially if traffic could be a consideration. Although you should never wait for the helo, you need to make sure you can get where you are going in a timely fashion. As there is ALS interception involving a medic...there can be Aviation interception also!
  9. Shortcut (ie hyperlink): Vinny, from EMTbravo, photos!
  10. I can donate some time to helping with the site besides just posting...I already have a few products and such, so if that helps, I am able and willing.
  11. That is pretty cool...when do we get to practice...oh yeah, they are kind of new for that right?
  12. Very tough question based on a picture. Everyone seems to have good input. Safety should be everyone's first concern and as ALS said...every roof is a truss roof until proven otherwise...very wise words from Mr. Safety himself! Plain old simple yes or no question. NO!
  13. I believe that this topic has to be discussed in individual vicinities. For instance, in Yonkers, it is not uncommon for 2 units (excl spvr) to be dispatched to the same event due to either a lack of information or an excellent amount of information. There is a policy under true SSM (system status management) however that is not followed and hasn't been for some time, that is 1 unit emergent, other non-emergent. For the most time the closest unit should respond priority and upon arrival immediately brief commo and the other responding crew as to the condition. In some instances, such as known Cardiac Arrest, than the ALS unit shall respond priority, and the BLS (backup crew) non emergent. If needed at any point and at the direction of the person on scene the second crew may be requested to step up their priority and get there ASAP. In locations where there are extensive response times by both ALS and BLS for whatever the reason may be, this plan may not be as feasible. In that, both units may be required to respond emergent to almost all calls to ensure proper patient care in a timely manner. And as was said, no one should ever wait on scene for the other units arrival if they are able to package and move the patient with the resources provided...that is why someone invented the ALS intercept. Most of the time this should be adhered to. As well, EMT's need to have confidence in making a judgement about the condition of THEIR patient and either cancel the medics if not needed, get moving to the ER, or stabilizing the patient that requires extensive treatment at the scene (extrication, severe bleeding control where moving would jeopardize). We all receive the same basic training, we all just have to use it and not fear it!
  14. I remember when I started at Empress that this was in the lot but not used...Awesome vehicle to look at...just plain awesome! Interesting story about 65 (hahaha)...I believe the brand new paramedic who was about 2 weeks in at Empress thought that it was me on the nextel and since I was a jokester thought I was f#cking with him. Until he saw the rig was really not there anymore. Great story...this was not the only time a unit was stolen...remember that night in Cottage Gdns...all I know is I was listening to a scanner and heard the county police air a hotline out of Yonkers in regards to a file 1 ambulance. Twice in like 2 years...boy it was a great JOB! I think there were only 2 of these ladders ever made...someone from Mahopac would know better though!
  15. Police involved???? Tryed to ram ESU??? I was there but I was delivering beer for Bertoline and sons at that time during my time off from school...Pretty wild scene!
  16. Happy birthday to my ex-chauffer. I think we may be going out Saturday night for someone else's birthday...will relay the particulars if you are up for a few drinks!
  17. Another case where most times the emergency is over once EMS (or properly trained personnel) arrive at the scene. There are very few times it is necessary to respond with a victim/patient to the ER utilizing emergent operation capabilities. If there is a life threatening injury that is out of your control and the need for immediate ER care is necessary than it is justified. I remember volunteering at 2 EMS agencies for some time here is northern Westchester and with the help of some of the EMTBravo members we were able to quell this idea that anytime the ambulance was moving the lights/siren should be on. I hope we actually saved at least 1 life by pushing this issue with the non-progressive senior members that just didn't understand at first!
  18. Negative, expedite is when you contact the starship Enterprise at 555-9018 in any area code and have them beam the unit to the scene. I guess no one knows about this cause not many people are calling! Catch up with the times! As for no lights, no sirens...I agree...EMD should be used all the time and the response quadrants followed! Way to many times do we put our lives in danger and think we are immune, proceeding with lights and sirens. People will always do stupid things, cause non emergency service persons have no idea what to do and PANIC! Don't kill yourself and please don't kill anyone else!
  19. Did someone say smoked turkey jerky????? Sure, Dan, I will take some! How about some Venison Sausage???? As well, does anyone here volunteer for New Hackensack FD? If so please contact me via PM...May have 2 potential volunteers...my brother in laws just moved to Wendy Rd and all of sudden started asking me questions about the emergency services and are interested in joining!
  20. Hyper Link to State Thruway Authority: NY State Thruway Authority Anyone know (init915?) why the Thruway cars go by that 700 series number decaled on the rear 1/4 panel of the vehicle and not the xTxx number on the vehicle like the rest of the troopers?
  21. And a hyperlink to our Troop here on the Eastern Side of the Hudson River for the State Police: NYSP Unit Identifiers broken down by Zone/Car in Troop K Noticed a few cars are missing: TMC Camaro, Somers K9, TMC K9, Cortlandt Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Van...but not many!
  22. My partner, the "buffest", is answering this question but is not verified so click on the link: Department Numbers for Dutchess County NY These are the first 2 numbers of the units identifier. The last 2 numbers are the type of apparatus and the number of that apparatus type... 1 = engine 2 = 3 = tanker 4 = ladder 5 = rescue 6 = utility type vehicle 7 = ambulance 8 = 9 = miscellaneous (support...trailers, marine (boats)) If it only has 1 last number...ie 39-1 it is the 1st chief....39-2 assistant chief and so on Click below for further info: How Dutchess Numbers their units Countywide (from NF2G)
  23. Talking about pics.... Me, My Driver, and our favorite ahem Intox? And when we tryed to play off that we FLY!!! Right!
  24. Or the most recent: Male just called here.... Two males claiming to be Police Officers approached caller and took his shoes, wallet, and keys...sts they were not in uniform and not driving a police car...he is waiting in the bodega in which he called from. Caller feels this may be suspicious. YOU MAKE THE CALL!!
  25. Kind of goes back to: Animal Rescue...Emergency or Not? Not only in the fire service is in not a true emergency, but there is really no reason unless the dog is actively biting a person and will not release or you are being chased by a rabid raccoon that can run faster than a cheetah! On the dog bite...we have ESU thanks...no need for SPCA to come in blaring unless they want to bandage the shooting victim!
