Once again, as was said already....blah blah blah... A Glucometer is a "tool" to aid someone in doing their job. Once an EMT has determined that the situation is hypoglycemia, they can simply verify this by doing a so called fingerstick. Just as the Police recognize that someone is speeding and approximately how fast they are going, they use the Radar gun to verify this condition. Or as firefighters do with Thermal Imaging Cameras, they see smoke, know there is fire, but verify its location and amplitude by using their "tool" or "gadget". If an EMT cannot recognize or decipher hypoglycemia then the tool is useless and they should not be able to use it. Technology is awesome, but should not take the place of the individuals brain!

We saw this earlier today...that was nuts!

I am serious...more weight added to the gun, what if the camera causes it to get jammed in your holster and you get shot? Too many issues...

How about a plate with a glass or plastic license plate cover (which is illegal anyways)? Will the reader fail to recognize the numbers and letters then too? I do know of only 1 car in the YPD traffic division with the readers, but they don't tell us anything in the radio room that would keep us in the know about available technology! I believe "825" car has this device (Charger)... About the device reading through glass, may have to do with pitch and thickness...

I am glad 308 does preplan those events, however this event went beyond pre-planning! The pre-plan was overwhelmed and mutual aid was called based upon MABAS (which I read about today-mutual aid box alarm system, see October Firehouse Magazine). Unfortunately, some people weren't so familiar with the area. This could have happened to anyone of us. Send me to Brooklyn or Queens and I will be so lost...and as I have seen in the past, it is very easy for anyone to get lost in a tense situation. I am sure that Chicago and the metro area mutual aid planners will go over this MABAS and correct the issues that arose due to this situation. In the future, all agencies that "could" become involved should be given packets containing important information and maps of the zones of the marathon. Hopefully, Empress and "308" take this into consideration for when they handle events so that this tragedy is not repeated anywhere.

They are always very helpful there and they have a demo of almost every available thing in the world of photography that you can play with and ask questions about...their staff is knowledgeable!

In case you hadn't noticed, this is a free country, and we all have the freedom to speak. You have no right to warn him about being "jammed up" over opening his mouth about a situation, our Bill Of Rights ensure that he cannot be disciplined or treated unfairly resultant of speech that does not offend anyone. That is the problem with the emergency services...no one speaks up! If someone doesn't like the issue that is being raised maybe they should mull it over and make an appropriate decision, one that makes sense, provides safety, and puts no ones lives in danger including those that are traveling the roadways that the apparatus from further away will be using to get to the scene. Discussions like these are necessary and if people could put their ego's in their pockets, they may actually learn something or at least get some ideas. There are way too many people that just believe their ideas are the best and most practical...and that is why people are constantly clashing!

Hopefully PBA's tell em to go shove it!

Wow, that is "Nuckin Futs!"

The league should sanction Boras and A-Rod, they were supposed to wait until 10 days after the World Series. Just as the Yankees are waiting to announce who will manage next year. If he is that greedy, than go find a place to play. No where else will they build a new Stadium that will mean as much to baseball. And no where else will that Stadium look for a name similar to something like "The House that Ruth Built." If A Rod had stayed, broke the homerun record and led the Yanks to a couple of World Championships, the new Stadium could have been "The House that A-Rod Built!".

I don't know if this affects any of the other members on this site. A while back, a member named YonkersFD was removed from the EMTBravo network secondary to a number of situations that this person created, including falsifying information. I have a feeling that this person is now a member again, using the "handle" AndyAndy. My suspicions are that this person likes to portray that they are someone they are really not. On numerous occasions this member has contacted me, and visited "my links" and subscribed to them and has sent me messages about things. I do not know this person. As well, AndyAndy added some friends to his profile, and 2 of those persons contacted me (my bosses) and asked me to speak to this person via email. This person, AndyAndy, was asked to remove those persons from his profile as he uses that to portray a self importance and falsehood of who he actually is. Recently, he decided to send me a retaliatory email threatening me and saying that "I was rude to him". Please be aware that this child is not a member of the YFD, has no pertinent relationship to myself or the members he is so called "friends" with, and should be disregarded. Unfortunately, sometimes being on a public forum we receive some bad apples as we have seen in the past, and this person is a "bad apple" to EMTBravo. It is obvious that the core group of this site are mutual acquaintances and have known each other for some time as is evident in posting, we are never trying to leave the general membership out with our inside jokes per say, and I apologize to anyone who may have thought I was rude to them on this site, however I am passionate about the emergency services and am not afraid to point out the errors of our ways and try to help correct them if I have an idea. As well, I feel I am open to criticism from people I know and people I don't know. Please, be who you are and don't pretend to be anyone else, and if you see someone here pretending to be someone they are not, point it out, please!

This bonehead just doesn't get it, he has since emailed me via Youtube.com about how I had him blocked from EMTB once again! TO AndyAndy/YonkersFD (user names): If "YOU" are reading this, stop now, before I come find you and have you arrested for harassment. I am not going to play games with "YOU" and I know who you are from the 1st time I dealt with "YOU" AndyAndy/YonkersFD. I have all of your information including your phone number and once again do not contact me or anyone at my job regarding this website or anything at all! This is not a joke! I guess sometimes people get a little over zealous, but when you are asked to stop your actions, it is wise to do so!

I like that flash...I don't have a speed flash yet, but want one with the indirect lighting feature! I use a Canon Dig Rebel (x901) with either the standard 18-55 lens or the 70-300 efs digital image stabilization lens. I have a moderate complement of filters, such as stars, UV Haze, Circular Polarizer...getting colored ones this weekend. Have a tripod (can't recall the name) goes from 18 inches to 6 feet using 3 different lengthening zones. Also have a lens hood fully encompassing. 2 batteries, 4 CF memory cards ranging from 128 mb to 4 gig. Backup system is an ancient HP735 dig, with SD cards up the wazoo! I have 3 other devices that utilize that technology for viewing purposes. As well have a Sony Digi Handycam with 30 GB HD... Use Microsoft digital imaging suite, windows movie maker for processing. Also now have a dedicated photo lap top that goes along with...getting wireless card (Verizon) to begin uploads from the field.

I don't think you can make such statements, it falls under harassment, no? I don't know at what political level it really counts, but I know you cannot so much as joke about doing that to the President. Of course, the caller was upset, granted he is a professional fire fighter and lost his cool, and that should be taken into consideration. It goes both ways, he should have just asked for the ambulance and if they did not get there within a considerable amount of time he should have reported them to the "supervisors". Sometimes people allow their emotions to act for them, in this case it is obvious that is what happened, however it does not appear that the ambulance dispatcher did anything to retaliate. The tapes, they would be nice to hear, that would aid this discussion. Anyone want to FOIL them?

Jeez, Mike (future fireman), I didn't think calling you a Red Sox fan was that bad a comment when I sent it to you...but thinking about it more I guess it is messed up calling you that! You are welcome to be a Yankee fan anytime...LOL. On the fact: This topic should not be deleted, it is a major concern and issue, and if change is to start, it should start here (sorry)... If someone PM's you they have something to hide...if they think this is a non issue, let them stand up and speak their piece and put out their opinion for discussion. They don't have to identify themselves as someone involved but maybe they can give us 1 good reason for skipping departments that is not obvious to the naked ear (sorry again). Like I said before, to put theirself, their members, and their constinuents (people whom they serve) in jeopardy is cause for alarm. Safety first, right? However, if there is a reason, such as neighboring service is lacking a particular piece or equipment or service, I think that each and every one of us will understand and the discussion will be solved rather than impeded by egos. On a side note, PM's should not be used to threaten anyone. If you don't like the discussion, ignore IT! And as for questioning dispatch, I believe it should never be done over the air, there are a lot of ears listening and it sounds so unprofessional, if there is a problem, call the dispatch supervisor and deal with it, if you are not a supervisor to begin with, you should start by contacting your supervisor. Dispatchers are humans and they make mistakes, however proper dispatching is not a mistake and when someone feels the need to change the decision that was made based on policy and procedure they should be ready to be put in their place. Mutual aid plans should be pre plans that are adhered to, and not even the person on the scene should be able to change it on a whim...if they try they should be brought up on charges and removed from their position. These plans should be planned out properly to include all types of specialty service calls and kept on file for the dispatch agency to review when called for. Or, don't call mutual aid and try to do it yourself, get your own dispatcher, and leave the rest of us alone...and let us know how it turns out!

OK, well if they are specifically requesting a FAS Team and the neighboring departments are unable to provide this specific service, than there is nothing wrong with going to the next available company with the specific type of equipment or service. However, better would be an automatic dispatch on such assignments that sound as though they may be needed, reducing the response/waiting time for that service to be in place. At my job, if it sounds like a worker, the Battalion Chief will usually roll the next due Engine Co. for FAS Team coverage, so they are on the way already, and when the crews actually get to doing, they are there to help if needed. The crews usually are not left uncovered by this service and don't have to "wait" long for it to arrive. We all know that Cities are different than rural areas when "coverage" is brought into play. The next due company may be miles away and not just a few city blocks.

I feel ya...this is what happens under "home rule" which is the way NYS is governed! It is not safe for the persons in need nor is it safe for the firefighters of the department needing the equipment...but if that is what the "Chief" says, that is what he says...even if he is an idiot and is putting the lives of his members and the constituents they are supposed to protect into further jeopardy. If this pertains to you, maybe you should re-think your ways and realize that friends will be there when you call them, even if you don't...
