To be honest, when we got the job in the radio room we thought the lady was well...you know...But we sent out the "Building Collapse" assignment and when L70/E314 got on scene they said the screens and window fans had been blown out of the windows and some of the ceilings in the apartments had come crashing down. Fortunately no one was injured as a result of "Darwin of Crestwood Lake". Thanks to Con Ed (Jim Feeney) for the extremely fast response. Oh and in the future, people should read the instructions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just learned that the 2 people hit by the elderly driver were the parents of an ER Nurse at St. John's Riverside Hospital. The mother is still in Jacobi in critical but stable condition with a number of injuries including a Pelvic fracture. She is set to go to surgery as soon as they feel her injuries have stabilized enough to allow it. Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts. Once again, this topic brings up the age old question, when is it time to stop senior citizens from driving. I have not spoken to the accident investigator in this incident, but from what I learned from others it sounds like a "senior moment" is to blame for this unfortunate event. We continue to hear more and more of these incidents occur, but no one has the gall to step up and make legislature because they fear losing votes come election time because senior citizen groups are notoriously politically based. Thank God no one died in this incident! As well, at this time, no charges are being filed on the driver...that is what the public information officer has addressed to the media outlets.

Am working, but not paying attention tonight...what is up with the pursuit on the hotline...sounds like County and State and maybe some others. Something about deploying "stingers" which we found on wikipedia as the federal signal's brand name spike strips. Sounded like they were doing this on I87 at exit 13 in Rockland County but the pursuit began in Westchester and went over the bridge. Any info is as always, appreciated.

Boy, the next generation is a lot dumber than ours! I never would have thought about riding on the outside of a moving car whether it be the roof or the running boards, especially at those speeds. Isn't that what they make "amusement" parks for???? This is not the first and won't be the last. Another thing I have heard of is Subway/L Train surfing...sounds...interesting to say the least, but not interesting enough for me to try it. And I don't think that some of these morons even need alcohol to do this stuff!

I could care less. I don't drink Bud or any of the family of products, but don't think the recipe will change. Brewing process will remain in U.S. where it holds a greater than 80% share of the beer market. Yes, the Busch family will have to find something else to do, but they haven't been doing so well in recent years. Didn't they lose the license for the "Busch" series auto racing to "Nationwide"? They advertising has been falling off, other than the "suck one" commercial. Wish I was a share holder, I would probably be able to buy gas now. And anyways, I drink Heineken Premium Light on the regular and that has always been European even though that too is brewed here (White Plains).

Very Sad Day! One of the nicest and most positive people on earth! Rest In Peace Bobby! We will miss you!

I wouldn't buy into the slanted article so fast. About a year ago, around playoff time we had an incident here in Yonkers. The press came to the conclusion that because the guy had a Boston Red Sox hat on and he was from the Massachusetts area that the other 2 that beat him up used that alone as a reason to fight. They aired it out on TV, Radio, and printed press and couldn't be further from the truth! If I recall, they were all hitting on the same woman and couldn't come to terms with not getting some! The press most likely took MA and baseball bat and added 1+1 and got 9. I am not saying that this article is patently untrue, however, our press these days likes to make the story a bit more interesting with opinions taking place of fact.

But Barry, is it parade worthy...LOL I have already spoken my peace on the need for a new boat in Ossining in a previous thread and I stand by it. It is not a necessity given the amount of other available resources. Boats are the new Cascade system. Years ago Buchanan was one of the only ones in Westchester, now everyone has their own in some fashion and Verplanck is discussing buying one. Every department doesn't need every piece of apparatus, doesn't NYC get by with specialty pieces covering at least entire boroughs if not being citywide and don't they actually get the calls? With the way the economy is, remember the new boat will use fuel! Not a wise expenditure in my eyes!

I was the dispatcher for YPD on this assignment. I was shocked when I read the job. It was definitely a "hoot". All are safe and they left later after receiving a replacement pilot from the State. Once again, just when you thought you had seen and heard it all!

Despicable!

I disagree with Tx. I believe that we have to continue to be vigilant and proactive! Kudos to the NYPD for their continued high visibility patrols that do deter not only terrorism but basic crime. You never know if one of these accidentally deterred bank robbers or other thieves or criminals by just showing up somewhere as something was going down. They may not yield big deal arrests or crack down on quality of life crimes but they do just what they are supposed to do! Or would you guys rather wait til they blow something up and then we can just react again?

Since this test covers 2 jobs that someone in the County thinks are the same, but aren't nearly, I will chime in. I worked at the County Police for 1 year and then left for Yonkers. These 2 positions are apples and oranges and one is definitely better than the other. I believe someone on this site actually did both... 60 control has a better schedule, less work load regularly, better benefits (meaning extras) and everyone in the room is on the same playing field other than the civilian supervisor who is just that, a civilian supervisor. County Police follows a rotating chart in which you work a set of days, evenings, and then nights or vice versa unless that has changed. Even if you are EMD qualified/certified you can only get the "bonus" if you work at the DES (60 control) which is plain ridiculous if they are truely the same job. There is more forcible overtime at the County Police which means if you have plans in the summer, you may not get to act on them. Don't get me wrong here, the people at the County Police were great to work with, even the cops and police supervisors, but it is not an even playing field mixing the civilians and cops. Also, the work load daily between dispatching and nyspin duties as well as people calling in and off shift at outlying posts is heavy. However, if I had had a choice, I still would have chosen the Police over 60 because that is more what I was interested in at the time. Now, I might want a break...and technically I have only been doing this for 4 1/2 years. And once again, good luck to the union members here, I hope you guys do get a fair contract from the county sometime soon!

Everyone has the capability, just getting procedure in place and an understanding that even buffs have to use their brains and be safe is the problem and most likely why it wouldn't ever be implemented in Westchester County! Personally, I practiced this in my former career as an EMT. I also tried to inform others as to how unsafe lights and sirens could in fact be and how over used they are! One of my biggest pet peeves is FDNY EMS using the flashing box lights during transport of patients, I find this completely ludicrous and feel it only compounds the public to misunderstand its use further!
-
I see this as a progressive move by people who are using their brains. The surprise to many is that this is far too uncommon this day and age. No one should be responding to open hydrants, water leaks, stuck elevators etc with lights and sirens. Only true emergencies or calls of an unknown nature should be handled with priority. If the calltaker is able to get enough good information, than a downgrade of the priority if recognized is appropriate! Reduce liability during responses and increase safety all around.

Ok, here goes...went to a physics site! Velocity of falling object, aka impact velocity: v=square root of (2xgxh) in this case the velocity = the square root of 2 times 9.8m/s sqd times the height (in meters). Hence, the impact velocity in this event is 5.62164417. How did I get there? 10 feet = 3.048 meters (1 foot is .3048 m), 9.8x3.048 got me 3.22, when squared, I get 10.3684 and when multiplied by the original height of the object 3.048m, I got 31.6028832 and typed "square root of 31.6028832" into the google tool bar and it gave me the answer...(just found out the google tool bar is also a calculator). Next... Physical Energy of the falling object: PE=mgh in this part the physical energy is equal to mass times gravity (9.8ms2) times height. 43 lbs is 19.55 kg (1kg = 2.2lbs...) the height is 3.048m and the gravity is 3.22m/s2 The PE is 617 or so kg. Kinetic Energy of the falling object: KE=1/2 mv sqd KE = 1/2 19.55kg times 5.62164417 sqd. KE = 308.91818328 How does this translate to common english? I don't know. However, I have personally seen an incident like this a few years back on Cliff St in Yonkers...some may remember. It was a 6 year old child, A/C fell on him from 3rd floor window, approx 18-20 feet. Child had bi-lateral pneumo and posturing was evident u/a. Not a great sight! However, the child turned out okay, and walked out of the Med Ctr a month later. Hopefully, the Eastchester FF will have great results too. And my final result is that it would feel as if a 280lb gorilla landed on him without explanation.
