  1. Will it really happen? Too bad they are spending money on moving the old house on "underwater st". This move would be progressive and make a whole lotta sense! Good luck to all the Peekskill FF's in getting this approved and built! Also, is this a Fire only facility? or are other agencies possibly moving there to?
  2. Looks like it got too many hits and ebay took it down!
  3. Writers Note: I am not a firefighter and although I went through some courses years ago and have done some stuff at the County Facility with my locality in the past, my opinion on this is as a DISPATCHER only! The call comes in to 911. 911: "911 (enter location here), what is your emergency?" RP: There are sparks coming from the outlet and smoke. 911: Confirms address and says they will send the fire dept. RP: Thanks 911 of course (right!) FD Dispatcher gets job. Reviews address, call type, and nature of condition. Job is entered as an electrical short. Quiz: 1) Should dispatcher send out call as an electrical short which in my location does not get full response only limited? 2) As a responding unit do you treat this as a possible "job"? 3) Do you think, based on potential, that call should be upgraded to a possible "job" and electrical short used as a "clearing code"? 4) First due companies (engine and ladder), what tools do you grab and bring in? 5) Please provide info about your locality and the response generated for a reported electrical short and for a possible fire. Thanks! That's about it! Got burned a few years ago when info on this type of job was a little shady. Ended up being a working job in the end! Learned a lesson. However, I continue to see this call type entered and sent out routinely because people with no fire experience determine it is only an electrical short after a brief conversation with a person on even less experience. Looking forward to a productive discussion!!!!!!! Please no bashing!
  4. About NYSPIN, I don't get to do that anymore...only inquiries in Yonkers, there is a "special unit" that handles the entries and exits...Used to do that when I worked at the County though, kind of miss that work...broke up the everyday with something different and a little more in depth. That midnight thing is tough, I used to hate when Yonkers sent out all the file 13's at once, you'd be in the middle of a rap sheet for pistol permits and then this File 13 unrelated would end up in the middle of it! As for Yonkers FD responses: 10-37 (electrical short-which is based on calltaker's knowledge): 1E, 1L, 1R, 1B 10-29 (reported structural fire): 4-5E, 2L, 1R, 1B, and the Safety Batt. 10-32/33/35 (activated alarm, sprinkler activation, fire alarm sounding <persons in premise calling in>): 4E, 2L, 1B on some activated alarms the Rescue goes...like Hospitals and maybe nursing homes. Of course everything is based on what the caller can tell you or describe. The time I got burned, the call-taker put the job in as a 10-37 and in the remarks they typed something like, over-heated fan smoking. First due was the Batt, (Batt2 on here I think...), and he had a 10-29 and requested we fill out the assignment. It was on Saw Mill River Rd. Hasn't happened to me since...now they all get full assignments because I am not there and can't trust someone else's observations to be accurately relayed through the game of "telephone"!
  5. Thanks...that is what I was thinking if it were medical in nature...ease of removal. A fall would definitely get c-spine but a routine seizure on occasion gets to walk themselves to the bus...ahem. It looks like you made the right call since he was coming out of his post-ictal state, obviously this wasn't a simple epileptic seizure and there were other factors involved. And it is always nice to have a medical control doctor that trusts your judgment, no? Also removal of the victim could've been tricky. This is one of those calls that I referred to in the discussion about the "new" New Rochelle Rescue and the part of the specs about a crane boom on the rig. Possibly could be used with a Stokes to remove the victim to ground level from below!
  6. PJM...not enought clarity...what the heck does that mean?????????
  7. Damn good idea! May prevent a big incident!
  8. Seth, this is an excellent post in that I promote the usage of smoke detectors as most people do. In another time on this site I also made my opinion known that I felt that departments in the Metro NY area aren't doing enough when it comes to this issue. I mean, I have seen you photos from Texas and Arizona and it appears they have a really proactive at least advertising campaign. I believe that local departments should be doing a bit more. At least once a year the local fire departments should do a drive for batteries and smoke detectors and then as they go door to door for other things such as fundraisers they should speak to residents about the importance of these devices and even offer to inspect theirs. I am sure there are a lot of homes everywhere that don't check their own at least once a year and the service recommends at least twice right? There are senior citizens that can't check theirs due to age or condition, new homeowners who have no clue (mortgage crisis), and those who just plain forget. I challenge a member from every department that reads this to bring this up and push for a program!
  9. Fire in a vehicle near a structure...gets put in as a structure fire in my book until a unit gets on scene and advises that they "can handle"! You never know...and as JBE once said, "When in doubt, send em out!" Especially at a hospital where there are more dangers than at a regular house! Kudos to Nyack and to the EMS crew for how this was handled. I hope you said that JBE...just remember it being part of a discussion we had years ago about Highway responses in NYC...
  10. If NRFD got a Rescue with a boom crane it would definitely make their Rescue unique and add to the Task Force they have in Southern Westchester as another special piece that can be called out for that once in a while job where it would make sense! It would be great to see something that not everybody has but might need one day. Almost like a cascade or Tower Ladder used to be.......lol
  11. 2 quick questions... 1) Is this a medical call or an injury? (In other words did he suffer a fall?) 2) What type of restraint did you use in order to get him to stop moving/fighting enough to admin the glucagon shot?
  12. LoHud article! YPD reducing High visibility patrols to cut overtime costs!
  13. Or the chick in Getty Square cause the girl painted her nails the wrong color! These things cease to amaze me....If that is all it took for a guilty plea, more DA's need to try it!
  14. When you sue, you should sue everyone possibly involved so you have a better chance of actually winning something. They probably sued the municipality which owned/maintained the roadway for some piece of the pie.
  15. Mike....either you got a really tall tripod or you got lucky! How did you get the overhead shot????
  16. Or the money could have helped with the repairs needed at the fire stations that have been evacuated! Guys living in trailers. Sounds like someone or maybe a couple of people need to resign!!!!! Maybe Mt. Vernon should look to an outside source for their new Fire Commissioner...like a retired FDNY or Yonkers Chief! Yes, Jodi, it would've made a great hot dog wagon. Door 3 = Chili, etc!
  17. This is actually a good idea so that they are wearing their seatbelts on the way to the job and not donning their gear until they get on scene...Safety! MOD NOTE: Seat belt discussion that follows moved from here jack
  18. If I recall...An Empress Van was "tagged" during a job in Schroeder a few years back. Wasn't a smiley face though! And I believe Chris King was on that bus too. Weird, his name keeps coming up eh Dan?
  19. That is some unusual incident! RIP
  20. Wow! A secret service agent was in on it! I guess there are bad apples everywhere, that is sad! Credit Card fraud costs so much money each year it is ridiculous, and it is such a pain in the rear to get answers or information and then try to follow it up! Hopefully this makes a dent in the underground business!
  21. LoHud and Jim Bostic (who is usually right on) have got to be kidding!!!! LoHud article in full! Schlobaum or Schroeder St. has always been a very run down, violent area. Until MHA and the Yonkers PD took on an initiative to lock down the site to residents. There has been a seriously visible reduction in crime and violence in the projects since the demo of Mulford began and the security started at Schroeder! Now, Mr. Bostic and LoHud (The Journal News) want to blame the good for the bad. Are you kidding me? That's right...now the police are the cause of gang violence! Since the gangs involved in the recent violence seem to be the Lawrence Street Posse and the Vatos Locos...and the 167 or something out of the Bronx! I don't think any of those "organizations" come out of Schlobaum! I am not in the gang unit though...but I cannot recall the last time I got a call about gang activity in the projects! Maybe other than Calgano (School St)!
  22. Yea right...pics of Bergie, Mousey, and I are still on there...although they are classics! You and your Lumina...still got it?
  23. Dan you have 999 posts!
  24. Twin to Hughsonville's in Cadillac Creme...ewww! Nah, kidding! I like the Rombout apparatus! However, why do they have 4 engines? Is their response area that big?
