Upper Saddle River KME Tanker was delivered last Friday
 

 

Update: From a reliable (and thanks to) source, the new Ladder 4 will be a KME 109' rearmount Aerialcat straight stick Quint. Delivery mid-2016.

METU is the acronym for “Medical Evacuation Transportation Unit”. It was designed specifically “to assist in the evacuation and relocation of stable individuals confined to a hospital, nursing home or assisted living facility during an emergency or catastrophic event.” It has the capacity to safely transport from one medical facility to another. It is not a MERV, MCI unit, or big ambulance as it is not set-up or equipped to treat, only to transfer.
I believe that 18 METU units were purchased under the New York City Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) and they are assigned to agencies in NJ (several cities/counties), Nassau County, Suffolk County, FDNY, City of Yonkers (YPD), as well as with WCDES here in Westchester.
Again, they are NOT units designed to treat or transport victims from MCIs…their mission is very specific and it is to transfer and transport people between hospitals and/or other health care facilities.
I hope this answers your question and clarifies the continued confusion regarding the METU and its mandated function.

Nothing against TFD getting this grant, but the bridge does nothing for N.R. we do not import workers or make products the City of NR is mostly residential and our population tends to commute out to work.
The Bridge is a major part of Tarrytown (& Nyack) they do not pay taxes to support local emergency services, but they are a big user of those services (yes NYSTA pay a small stipen, but it does not cover the cost of the service provided), the building of a new bridge will increase the requests for emergency service, so this is a nice way of compensating TFD, TVAC and others.

Yes Chris, the 89 Dash has been out of service for about 18 months now so we've been running with one Engine and automatic mutual aid from either Amenia, Millbrook or Dover depending on where in the district the call is, only on structure fire type assignments

Engine 164 was Westchester's First Tanker with an 800 gallon booster tank and a 500 GPM pump. It was the first piece of apparatus assigned to Amawalk Fire House (back when it was a barn behind the old school house), and the third new apparatus purchased by the Somers Volunteer Fire Department, before the Somers Fire District was formed.
Unfortunately, this is the only rig that I was never able to get a good accounting of, as to why we got rid of it and who it went to, and why we kept the 2 older rigs (1940 & 1943) when the 4 new Seagraves came in 1958.
We also don't have many pictures of it either!
We do have another copy of this same ad in our historical files.

I read this thread yesterday and have been following the discussion for a day and now feel compelled to add my opinion. It is disappointing that a member of this site asks a simple question about the status of a piece of apparatus which has been placed out of service due to fire and the automatic responses that are generated turn immediately to why does this department need this truck?
The funny thing is that rarely are the one’s questioning the needs of (fill in the blank) Fire Department, at all associated with that department – so how would you know what their communities specific needs are?
As example, I wouldn’t question why one department – of which I have no affiliation with or knowledge of their needs - has 3 ladder trucks even though they are surrounded by departments with ladder trucks on every side of their community – because it’s not my place to. If that department has determined that is what they need to do their job, I trust that their leadership has made an educated decision and that they are not just stroking their egos.
Ironically, it’s double edged sword here as well; a northern department is questioned why so much mutual aid is needed at a house fire, but another department that is self-sufficient is accused of wasting tax payer dollars and questioned why they need this truck or that truck instead of using more mutual aid. It doesn’t make sense; it’s ludicrous.
There was an interesting article on here lately about the fire service and its changing nature; how departments are being asked to respond to new situations and different types of emergencies all the time. Proper response to these new challenges often requires newer tools, gear and equipment to effectively mitigate these hazards; which in turn often means purchasing a newer and larger truck to carry this equipment and get the job done.
So - why does this town need this truck? Because their membership and commissioners and potentially their insurance agency have determined it is necessary for their district and their firefighters to do their job effectively.
