  1. Yes I am sure of the photo's accuracy. There were two Sutphen's. In John Calderone's 1990 edition of "A New York City Guide to Fire Apparatus" there are two different Sutphens listed, both with 1250GPM Pumps, and 100ft. Towers. The 1980 was delivered in July and given shop # ST8001D, at the time this book was published that unit was operating as a spare, and it had been numbered for Ladder 14. The 1981 Sutphen Tower was deliever in December of 1981 and given shop # ST8101D and it was in service with Ladder Company 119. Additionlly I have found Mike Martinelli, who runs FDNYtrucks.com to be very, very accurate.
  2. Someone had asked about the FDNY Sutphen Towers.... there were two, one a 1981, which was already posted on page one. THat unit is now in Rolla Mo. The other Sutphen was purchased in 1980...... it is now in service in Lock Haven PA. Check it out. http://www.fdnytrucks.com/files/html/other...ock%20Haven.htm
  3. I think that QA 1 belonged to the Somers FD. It was a 1987 Ford F-450 chassis with Reading utility bodywork. It is now Utility 5. It had a skid unit with a dry chem. unit and I believe carried the Jaws and other rescue and first response gear. It was SFD's "Highway" response unit. I have a slide of this unit somewhere I will try to find it and post it this week.
  4. http://www.fdnytrucks.com/files/html/bronx/e70.htm I think this unit was a demo unit, until it was sent to FDNY.
  5. Isn't the current rescue unit Engine 183..... which is a 1996 or 1997 Freightliner Pierce rescue pumper?
  6. I think Engine 219 is a Duplex Chassis, with bodywork by Young. I also believe that their Brockway Tanker has since been replaced...... I saw it for sale in a trade paper some time ago.
  7. What design are they looking at...... custom cab? walk thru body, walk around body? This is exciting news.
  8. A Second Blood Drive is taking place today at the Katonah Fire Department, 65 Bedford Road, Katonah NY. Anyone who is interested in donating is welcome. The drive is scheduled to run from 2:30PM until about 7:30PM. Hope to see some of you there, and thank you for your help.
  9. I am sad to hear that Centerport is having trouble getting the money they need for expansion of their FD....... but their actions are the absolute wrong way to go about voicing their disapproval..... I am sure it must be very, very frustrating, but there are more positive ways to get what they want. Just my opinion.
  10. Actually, Katonah's 1970 International/Gowans Knight Mini Attack was set up to be the first due fire engine at all of our calls........ it did that for 14 years........ As for Mini-Attacks today, they still can serve a purpose..... we still use our Mini-Attack for a variety of roles....second due to all MVA/PIAA's, Brush Fires, Road closings, but it also can still be used as a first line piece in adverse weather because it has 4WD..... great in the snow and in flood conditions, plus it can serve as a small, get in tight places unit in all parts of our district.... I don't think using a mini attack as a first line piece to a structural call is the wisest thing in todays day and age, even if it has a four door cab. When you never know how far out help is, how can you justify sending a vehical with maybe your only driver, and only a 200-750 gpm pump and 200 - 300 gallons of water?????? It just is not practicle or safe for property owners or especially for firefighters.

  17. I have sort of known about this for a bit and have kept quiet.... to help build some anticpation (lol)... but I want to say, I think that this is truly AWESOME! Great job FFD of finding this beauty and working to bring her home where she belongs! I love to see fire departments taking steps to preserve part of their heritage! As for the Chrome Ball..... this is kind of interesting. The ball is actually an air pressure chamber that is typically 1/2 full of air and 1/2 full of water when the truck is pumping. It basically works to create a smoother pumping motion and create a less choppy discharge.... in essense it prevents the hoses hooked up to the discharges from thrashing about...... this was important in the days of old canvas jacketed hose. This pressure chamber was really quite common in the old days, in fact it was a standard feature on piston pumps.... the precursor to modern centrifical pumps of today. Aherns Fox pumpers with the front mounted pumps where piston pumps the smaller red ball further back on the top of the pump is actually a piston. What made the Ahrens Fox's air pressure chamber unique was really it's size and placement. Additionally if you were to look at an old steam pumper you would notice between the seat and the stack a tear drop looking chrome plates ball......that too would be the air chamber. I hope I got all of that right... and I hope that makes sense, as well as answering your question.
  18. Once a week for a pager test, perhaps also used as a time to remind members of a meeting or a training is probably legitament. But I agree with calling 60 Control for permission first.
  19. Here Here!!!! =D> Well put EMTbravo, well put! I think that is totally unfair for us to bash Albany..... has anybody been to Albany??? Know what their situation is? What is to say they aren't deservant of every penny they recieved? While we may be more proned to incidents (terrorism in WC) news flash..... things happen elsewhere too. Unhappy you didn't get what you wanted....reconsider what it was you asked for.....who wrote your grant? Maybe next time consult with a professional grant writer if what you asked for is not so absurd and you were not a receipiant. Also, did you get a grant last year??? We can't all get everything we want all of the time........
  20. Firehouse.com annonced today that the final round of fireact grants for this year has been released. $750,000,000 was given to fire departments across the US for various projects. Congrats to all of Westchester's recipients. Good luck next year to all who apply!
  21. Hey all. I am away from my desk with all of my goodies about this stuff. As soon as I get back from CA. I will get you a definate answer to your definition request.
  22. This article ran on the front page of the Journal News this morning. I thought that it might be of interest to you all. I enjoy reading about the resurgence of community involvement, especially when it relates to the fire service. Check it out. http://www.thejournalnews.com/newsroom/021...pelfighter.html
  23. This artilce was actually about the Pelham Fire Department. From what I understand, Pelham Manor still has an active volunteer contingent too. I used to get the two departments confused myself.
  24. Sadly the cost of living is going to effect the fire service in Westchester County. It is sad that many of us, myself included will some day leave this area to findlocations that are more affordable. But I would us all not out new members because of their ecconomic status.... in many communities, people of white collar rank are joining the fire service. And while not every community is going to yield the same results as far as recruiting and retaining from this group.... there are departments out there who are having success with this population. Remember that people from all walks of life will be interested in serving their communities...... don't be too hasty and rule them out..... if you haven't tried to recruit them, you can't really know that they are not interested. But on the other hand I share your concern. It is true that life's demands are often a factor that will negatively effect the fire service. I think we all can attest to that.
