  1. Thats what I think the problem is. I wound not want anyone thinking I have a gun when I don't. Criminals are not going to wait to see what the side of the car says before they start shooting. But if it was an all blue car then they may know thats it not an armed officer. Did they ask the auxiliary guys or just make an executive decision? And it may end up starting a new thread but can someone just give me a quick description on what an auxiliary officer does?
  2. She was a Master Sergent in the Army, im pretty sure she would do alright. This is from the city web-site: She asked for bunker gear but the request was denied and told she didn't need it. I think she was just put into a very bad situation.
  3. I think what Monty is saying is that in those areas full of those types of structures then there should be that type of protection and response times. But out in the middle of no-where it is not financially viable to have the same amount of resources as a metro area. It is a fine line between adequate protection and wasted resources. There is no cookie cutter fire dept just for the fact that every state, city, and town are laid out so differently. I think regionalisation (sp) is a good way to combine the current assets and provide a more efficient department. It would be nice to have 5 men on every rig and have a station 5 minutes from every location but as we all know funding is limited and they are always looking for ways to reduce costs.
  4. awesome pictures! The house was occupied!? how did they not notice? Its blowing out the 1,2, and 3 sides and looks like it was going a good while
  5. I think that it is good to kind of flex your power but as stated it can only deter certain things. When was the last time terrorist just went some where and started shooting? WTC in 93' was a bomb, and in 01' were planes neither of which could be prevented by these patrols. What are the liabilities of going lights and sirens with no real threat? Seems like a liability to me. If they have the resources im all for it but if you driving up the highway and see one of these "parades" in you rear view mirror and try to slam over 3 lanes of traffic to let them by, it may be more harm than good.
  6. what exactly extra do these haz-tech buses do. Looks like scba bracket's and irons are added. Are they going to be cross-trained in firefighting?
  7. Im embarrassed to live one county away. It's on the local news for the past few days and the lady can barley speak. She said shes suing because she hasn't received enough money to live off of from workers comp and legally she cant sue the county. How are we first responders when our job is to help not make a bad situation worse.
  8. RIP brother watch over all of us
  9. The only thing it would stop is some one taking the truck or something in the cab. The compartments is where all the money is at with tools and things of that nature. I think it will create a false sense of security to leave the rig unattended. And as stated above it wouldn't be long before everyone knew the codes or overrides. Can you disengage it once you get to the fire ground or other scene? If someone needed to grab the TIC or something in the cab and its locked then you are out of luck.
  10. cant see the photos
  11. Let them not be forgotten.
  12. The E85 flex fuel thing is all about emissions I believe. You actually get less fuel mileage from the ethanol(e85) vs regular fuel and if im not mistaken it costs about the same price. The vehicles with this feature are the same priced either way. I believe just about all the tahoes and suburbans after 06' have it. I agree with the statement about the electrical load on the hybrid vehicle that a emergency vehicle would have. It may not be financially viable if you shorten the life of the batteries and have to change them prematurely. I can see if it was a take home chief or inspector's vehicle that would not see the everyday abuse a front line vehicle would.
  13. That is taken from the civil service web-site. Never heard of that before?
  14. definition of a hero. RIP
  15. looks like the 13th batt is hurting apparatus wise!
  16. I have to agree I have never heard of this happening and to tell you the truth I do not know if it is even possible. The LCD is all one piece thats why when you press on it you can see the colors move so I don't think there is a way to get between it. It may just be a defect in the LCD. Try a local computer store like everyone said the big chains just ship it off anyway. What kind of laptop is it?
  17. 30 is so young. RIP brother
  18. I see what you are saying but I think that as first responders we just have more sensitive ears and listen into the sirens too much. To the common ears I think it will do the job of getting the motorists to move over. But I know when I hear sirens in the distance I can almost always figure out who/what it is but thats just from being around it so much.
  19. Date:3/26/08 Location: Winter Garden, Florida Departments: Winter Garden, Orange County Description: Fire in a Fertilizer plant crews unable to use water to extinguish. Writer: Scottyk107 http://www.wftv.com/news/15713303/detail.html
  20. No i'm pretty sure Mt. Vernon opted out because of the money. I believe they said they would add it later when the funds permitted. But Jody or Loftus would know better then I do. I think it was something outrageous like >$8000 as well. The two Ferrara engines are FDNY spec or at leased based on it so i'm interested to as if they are NFPA compliant as well.
  21. I agree with repelling down but what if you are over the fire? You are between a rock and a hard place if you have no where to go. It would be nice to have both options available. Its not about what hasn't happened but about what can and inevitably will.
  22. It is not because of the context on the site but the amount of people trying to view it. The member number has increased so much that it crashed the old server several times. If the number of members remained the same from 5 years ago the cost would be the same but with the increase you need a larger server to accommodate for the thousands of more hits the site receives a day. I think you are misinformed as to why it costs more as are many people.
  23. Awesome editing skills
  24. Mt. Vernon never had a spare all the way up until this new rig was acquired so its nothing new. They are just rolling the dice and got lucky for all the years there was never an major breakdowns. How long until something gives?
  25. That is a very powerful statement, put into perfect words. May they rest in peace. And thanks to all of our armed forces for their sacrifices.
