I'm not too sure about that. I know there hasn't been one there, if there ever was, for the past 35 years. I'll look into that one. But, I don't believe there was one there!

So did anyone hear yet?

Chaplains can have numerous duties on the fireground. They act as a first line of the CISM. They give last rights to those in need or request- civilian or firefighter They can act as a first line for the Red Cross, in assisting with family losses. They assist with rehab, in just being a friend and someone who will listen. Chaplains have been around as long as the fire service itself. In fact, for those that don't already know this- the first listed fatality for the FDNY on 9/11 was FDNY Chaplain, Father Mychael Judge. I'm sure there are many other duties that they do, but thats all I can think of right now.

Somers expands again! The new Somers Station 8 is now located on Brook Place in Mahopac Falls, oops, I mean Somers Falls! Yes, Somers has now expanded into Putnam County. In fact, someone had beaten us there, and already labeled the refrigerator in the bay Station 8 for us. Pictures to follow!! Who will be next????

After being recalled to Active Duty and serving in Italy for a year in 2001-2002, and seeing how they drive and the speed limits (not!!) you'll know why they need that type of a pursuit car. They have the Autostrade, which is the same as the AutoBahn in Germany. It seemed like the minimum speed limit was 100+ MPH. The Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway is exactly where I was, just outside Naples, and I saw numerous fatal car accidents while I was there. That roadway is an extention of the Autostrade. You think 684 is bad, try keeping up on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway in a US made car! The Italian Polizia's normal patrol cars are Alfa-Romeo's, in fact so were the US Navy's!

Guys, I think the CISM teams are great too, but I'm looking for what other departments do for thier chaplains as far as fireground turn-out gear goes. This is a fireground operations question here, not about CISM teams. Thanks for your inputs.

CFI- County Fire Instructor SFI- State Fire Instructor Basically both do the same job, but one (CFI) is employed by the County and the SFI, is employed by the State OFPC, but works within Westchester.

Mike, I wasn't trying to imply that you were knocking it, sorry if you took it that way. That I know of- Guys have transferred to FDNY; Peekskill; Mohegan; TOWN of Mamaroneck (VMFD is all volunteer); Haverhill, MA; Perry Point, MD; and Greenwich, CT. It's a great job, and a great "foot in the door".

Mike, Your correct about not looking to make it a long career, but I loved working there, and wish it paid better, and it would be staying around. It is a good "stepping stone" for you wanting to get started on the career side! There are quite a few of us around the county now working in other Dept's, that started at the VA. The guys were the best! We had a load of fun, but always got the job done! Unfortunitly, the pay and the possible closing is what drove me to transfer, but the "grass is not always greener on the other side!"

23??, That would be great, but I heard only 20 applied and 2 were hired as SFI's. My info maybe incorrect, but that's what great about Firehouse Scuttlebutt!!

Our "record number" of responses last year is exactly why we now need 6 Stations! :-P If someone from West Somers was smart enough to capture that moment in April, maybe someone else here at EMTBravo would know what your talking about! Of course, if you do have pictures- post them!! I am a 3rd Generation Somers FF, and the West Somers- East Yorktown thing has been going on since my grandfather was around. We have always had an awesome relationship with the West Somers Engine Comapny #2, oops. I mean the Yorktown Heights Engine Comapny #1, and hope to continue that for generatios to come!
-
No, I haven't heard anything yet. I originally heard that they were going to hire 12 CFI's, but on Thursday, I heard they are going to hire 15. The first source is much more reliable than the 2nd, but I guess we'll see.

Back in the 80's before the Yorktown Heights Engine Co No 1 (aka West Somers Engine Co No 2) and the YHFD put additions on thier firehouses, Somers housed engine 279 (1959 Maxim) in Amawalk Firehouse, as a favor due to Yorktown's lack of space. Anyway, we sold her several times! We would pull it out, and put a For Sale sign on it. We received numerous inquiries and I'm pretty sure we could have actually sold her a few times. I think I may have a picture somewhere, maybe I find it one day!

You're right, the Carvel does close for the winter, but it should be open again soon! It was last summer anyway, and it was normal for it to close during the winter! I saw the new golf course last week, WOW!

Well Ed, If you used the parts from our Orens, then your Orens do have "elephants" hiding behing the "Indian Heads"!!
-
Somers also had 3 Gowans-Knights delivered in 1975, 1978 and 1979. They were Engine's 180, 185 and 186. I don't quite know why we went away from them :-k In fact the Mahopac rigs were built using the Somers specs, and one or maybe both currently have doors from Engine 185 and 186. Both 185 and 186 were rebuilt by Pierce in 1990-1991, and we stripped everything off them! Mahopac's doors were rotting out, and we gave them ours! So if you look closely enough, under the Indian Heads are Elephants! 8) If your ever in the Somers Fire House, the home of Engine Co 180, aka Heritage Hose, there is a framed calander from 1976 from Gowans-Knight featuring the old E-180 on it. =D> "After reviewing the web site, The Mahopac rigs I'm speaking of were the old Oren's which were also Gowans, not the newer Simon-Duplex's!"

The ride is the exact reason. The committee and commissioners at the time did not opt for the "comfort ride" suspension alteration because it voided the chassis warranty. As far as everything else goes, they have been successful- brakes, engine, transmission have all lasted a lot longer than the old Ford E350 chassis. Just about all the drivers like driving them over the Fords, and even the turning radius is better than the Fords. The "experiment" was X2, because of a deal for a reduced price for one with a follow-on order for 1 within a year! We don't plan on doing that again, either. We are very happy with the new Ford E-450 chassis, and time will have to tell. Thanks on the new paint scheme, it was on eof my better ideas!! Believe it or not, I had a lot of opposition to it at first, until it was delivered, even the ones against it, loved it!

Actually if I remember correctly, the Hollowbrook Fire House, may be on the property that was once owned by the old Hollowbrook Drive-in, but the actual drive-in, screen, and concession bldg were where the new residential development is to the left of the Fire House. I remember that drive-in well, used to go there all the time! It was great, then used to go to Carvel across the street after the movie!
-
NEGATIVE!!! Those Freightliners were strictly an experiment. The new 80B3 will be basically identical to 80B2.
-
The contract on the new engine still has not been signed as of this date. The way that is going, the Rescue may be in before the Engine! But, as it looks, we will be taking delivery of an Engine (E-185), Rescue (R-20), Ambulance (80B3), and Command Vehicle (C-2443) in 2005! Not too bad of a year, just in time for our 75th festivities!
-
Survival is included with the new Firefighter I course.
-
Thanks John! The Rescue 20, will be assigned to Lincolndale. Yes, there will be front bumper tools. The plan is this- Front Bumper- Curtis-Wright Powerhawk System Rear Compt (Stairs open up)- Hydraulic System, possibly a Centaur (old Lukas) or Amkus.
