  1. The commercial chassis are also considerably cheaper than custom chassis. In the Albany area, they are quite popular in both Career and Volunteer FD's.
  2. The last I heard at the County Chiefs meeting, was that the radios will start to be installed in April/May next year.
  3. No, they folded a few years back.
  4. In Somers- The policy is (1) Ambulance is to respond to all Fire Calls. Upon the transmission of a Working Fire, the response is upgraded to (2) Ambulances and (1) Medic. -The reason behind this is so (1) Ambulance is on scene strictly for EMS, if a Firefighter or Civilian needs medical care/ transport. The second Ambulance and Medic is for Rehab of Firefighters. -All Somers Ambulances are equipped with Rehab supplies, at all times. All Somers Fire Apparatus is equipped with at least (1) case of bottled water, for use on smaller incidents were an Ambulance is not on scene, or before an Ambulance arrives.
  5. Saw it yesterday at Excelsior just before delivery- Nice looking rig. Good job to the apparatus committee!
  6. Be advised for the 1st time in history, the New Academy of Fire Science Training Catalog is printed and on the street! At the instructors conference last week, they had boxes of them available! If anyone wants to know any specific dates, ask and I will post for you!
  7. I saw Hastings new Engine 43 at Excelsior yesterday- looking good! Getting final touches for delivery.
  8. I believe it may happen when it's least expected- just like in Montrose! We waited 4 months to get Station 9!
  9. Ah, The ol' Fairchester Hose Haulers Association Muster. Remember them well- always had an awesome time! Nothing has ever beaten the ol' "cannon ball alley", it is still discaussed at Musters all over- I had a talk about it at the Engine 260 Muster last week. We still have numerous awards in Somers that our old Rescue 20 took there year after year! I remember that FDNY pumper well also, that was the one that an article was done on, back in the 70's. I believe there is a discussion somewhere in this forum about that, if I recall. That was TMFD's Ladder 19, a 1940 ALF Series 500 100' Tiller. That was replaced in 1971- unless that was there by a private owner- these pictures may be from 1971.
  10. It's available on the Academy website: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/fire/residential.html
  11. Somers has expanded again! We are getting closer to the Hudson! Somers Station 9= 2143 Albany Post Rd, Montrose "The former home of Cortlandt Engine Co" Pictures to follow- BFD1054 has them!!
  12. Engine 182 will be 10-17 at 1800hrs Friday!!
  13. I just heard that they maybe hiring for 2 positions, not sure how true that is.
  14. TMFD, actually hired 2, 1 was a transfer from the FDMV. The other new "probby" will be in the academy.
  15. I'm not too sure about counting NY certification out. That held true about the old training courses. If you have taken the National Exam, even in NY, and have the NPQS certificate it should be good in any of the states across the nation that accept NPQS or IFSAC. NY only became certified with the NPQS, I believe in 2001. If you only took the FF1 class, that does not count. You must meet the other requirements and take the National Exam.
  16. Somers maintains an Antique Engine and Mini-Attack, however both are still in service and respond to calls. Engine- 182- 1958 Seagrave MA13 - 1966 International We used to maintain an Antique Rescue (20), a 1947 Ward LaFrance, 1 of only 3 ever made, and the only one still around. That was a true antique- we used it for parades, and a casket cassion for funerals. We donated it to the Fire Museum in Hudson in February, 2001.

  20. Yes it was a long and very tiresome disentanglement, under extreme and dangerous conditions. I was the extrication officer, on that job.
  21. Concur with the differences between Montour and Westchester. The NYS Firefighting and Code Enforcement Personnel Standards and Education Commission set the minimum for carreer firefighters at 229 hours as stated. This 229 minimum exceeds the requirements for both National Firefighter I and II. Career Firefighters, at the end of the academy, can take the FFI and II exams for national cert if they wish. The actual total hours for the NYS FFI and II courses is 105 hours.
  22. 320 is a bit high. NY's career firefighter training is only 229. 120 for a FFI and II sounds a little more on target. When I took my FFI and II course in VA, it was 178 hours and included EMS. New Yorks courses do not include EMS, that also must be taken outside.
  23. Just got home from an OT tour, and believe it or not, the letter was there!! HIRED- Effective 8/16/04. About time!
  24. It is the heaviest attended Muster in the area. Awesome time! The West Somers-East Yorktown Mutual Aid Muster Team will be there with Somers Engine 182 and Yorktown Engine 279! As always!!
  25. I really don't know the answer- I'm trying to stir up some minds. I'm sure chris498 will have some answers. Two I know- Somers was organized in 1931 as the Amawalk-Shenorock VFD. Buchanan Engine Company was formed in 1940.
