While this death of a fellow firefighter is tragic, I think we should refrain from questioning the instructors until all of the facts are out.

Michigan...I bet they get deals on the cars.

A recent topic here have hit a nerve with me and I wanted to know how others feel? The topic dealt with BLS training for firefighters. I understand that not every fire dept runs as EMT's or even first responders but we need to protect ourselves better then that. Every rig should carry a defib, supplemental O2 and all firefighters should be trained in the use of this equipment( maybe this needs to be part of FF1). Think of all the calls you are doing something fire dept related and there is no ems on scene. Early defib is major component in the ability to bring a heart attack patient back. This is a protection that we should be providing for ourselves and I don't think the fire service as a whole is doing enough about it. I understand that by carry the right equipment and having the rights trained people it may not save every firefighters who has a heart attack but we could reduce the number of deaths. Should every rig carry defib, O2 and trained firefighters? How do we make this happen?

Honestly this entire issue career/vollie issue is the Hatfields and the Mccoys. It has been fought for so long it just seems like the right thing to do.

Something to think about... Waterford - A local man was charged today with assault on a public safety officer after fire officials said he struck a firefighter with his SUV. William Morell, 47, of 9 Wilson Ave., also was charged with evading responsibility and breach of peace. The incident happened this morning while firefighters were putting out a car fire on Wilson Avenue, a small dead-end street in Quaker Hill near the Thames River. Morell's route was being blocked by fire truck so he drove over the fire hose in an attempt to maneuver out of the narrow street, firefighters said. “He wanted out,†Quaker Hill fire chief Matthew Carson said. Carson said when firefighters told Morell to stop, he backed up and nearly hit one firefighter. “He tried to back over Monte, which is my deputy chief,†Carson said. Deputy Chief Monte Fielder said when firefighter Jason Dickey saw the man backing up toward Fielder, he began banging on the hood of his Mercedes SUV to try to get him to stop. Morell then put the vehicle in forward, knocked Fielder down and took off through the back of a driveway and into the field behind a house, looping around Wilson Avenue houses in an attempt to come out on another part of the street, fire officials said. His path was blocked by a Cohanzie ambulance. “I told the police officer, ‘he just ran over one of my guys. I want him arrested now,†Fielder said. At the time, there was only one Waterford police officer on the scene and the driver apparently resisted arrest, leading three firefighters to jump on the man to aid the officer in making the arrest, fire officials said. By then, Cohanzie and Quaker Hill firefighters had used foam to put out a fire that destroyed the front end of a silver car parked in a private driveway. Dickey is being picked up from the hospital this afternoon after being treated for minor injuries.

First on the minor accident on the saw mill. Are that many units needed? The answer is clearly NO. The officers in charge of each Dept (Fire and Ambulance) need to notify dispatch that members not on scene already are not needed and should report for station coverage or something to that effect. Once the scene is controlled. Yes, training is needed between agencies so situations like this do not occur. all Police Officers need to understand the benefits of blocking a scene with a fire engine. The safety of emergency workers should never be compromised for "the flow of traffic". Everyone should check out www.firefighterclosecalls.com Under the section "Close Calls- Apparatus/Vehicle/Highway" There are plenty of good photos of proper placement of Apparatus on scene and a few photo's of cop cars taking the brunt of secondary accidents.

I don't remember SCBA's in backdraft, am I wrong?

I guess they can't go commando there anymore. So what do they do there when they are out in public and get a call? They have to go shopping and do inspections right? What about the poor junior guy who has to get into gear at a school demonstation?

X635, I'm in bascially the same situation as you are. I have to agree with that has been said in regards to your question. I always address a superior (even in social situations) as Chief, Cap and LT (or Lieu). The only way I would'nt is if they said to call them by their first name. The area where I slip up the most is guys who have been recently promoted. I am so use to calling them by their first name some times I slip and forget to use LT, but I'm working on it.
