Ditto on all of the above. What are you using the computer for? Will it be mounted or portable? What type of data entry will be required (key pad, electronic stylus, etc.)?

Should there be an upper age limit in the emergency services? We all read about the tragedies of "active members" in their 60's and 70's collapsing on scenes and the unfortunately unsucessful efforts to resuscitate them. Now that they're trying to screw with the retirement systems and increase the number of years required for service before retirement, will we see an increase in these types of deaths? What's everyone think?

It has happened in Westchester but fortunately nobody was hurt and I believe that the offender was apprehended.

We have to hold our local assembly and senate members directly accountable. Contact them and tell them how disgusted you are and remind them that come November when they're looking for our support, it won't be there unless they represent our interests NOW! Squeaky wheel gets the oil!

It is DEFINITELY time to make our voices heard, not just as it relates to training but taxes in general. If the Governer's budget goes through, the majority of local school districts will suffer drastic cuts in state aid. When that happens, you know what they'll do - just try to pass it along to the local taxpayer. My school taxes are high enough without a monster increase for 2010. Cutting the pork and pet projects, repealing these pay increases, DEcreasing the size of the Governer's security detail (that was inflated shortly after his sudden promotion), and other consolidation efforts must be implemented. We're in a crisis and to conduct business as usual is going to destroy us all. Albany Tea Party, here we come!

Thank you to those who ignored the nonsense in this thread and kept it on topic. I am utterly astonished by the absurd debate that knocked this thread off-topic and how some people forget that this is an online forum for "buffs" to share info, exchange knowledge, etc. This is not a courtroom, it is not legislative chambers, and it is not perfect. If you think that there was an incident worthy of inclusion that's fine, bring it up and discuss what made that incident unique. Don't diminish the ten incidents that alot of members were involved with by challenging the list as it stands. If you didn't know it already, I'll say it now. The entire EMTBravo network is the product of a tremendous amount of personal effort and commitment by Seth and he is supported by a staff of volunteers. Nobody gets paid to make this forum what it is and nobody expects your gratitude BUT you shouldn't be surprised when staff get defensive and/or take it personally when the site or staff is criticized. Some people wear their hearts on their sleeve and some people are extremely defensive of their organizations/agencies/passions/websites. It would be no different than me saying that your fire/police/EMS agency is no good or got it wrong; you'd take it personally so don't be so shocked or annoyed when a staff member does. We're all just human after all. From here on out, if you want to have an intelligent discussion about the top 10 incidents or other noteworthy incidents last year, GREAT! Let's have an insightful discussion about resource management, strategies and tactics, and the types of incidents that we're facing. But let's not get drawn into the kind of absurdity we all just read. Thanks, Truck4, for putting the list together and for all your time and effort posting so SO many IA's over the year. Thank you, Seth, for creating this forum and making it what it is today. And finally, thank you to the membership, for making this a place that people want to come to and exchange thoughts or ideas.

How many is so many?

The actual call location. Let's not get bogged down on why did they call who. Ultimately all the appropriate resouces were there so it's a moot point. Let's find out what the conditions of the buried worker were and how they managed to extricate him. What was his ultimate medical condition? Was there some unusual physical finding that prompted the STAT-Flight request? As this is only about 10 minutes from Jacobi and about 15 minutes from the Westchester Medical Center, I was wondering what made EMS think of that mode of transport.

If the cargo is food it's a good idea to get the health department or State Agriculture and Markets involved. They can impound the food to prevent it from ever being consumed if there's any issue with the refrigeration or containers. I know someone who once impounded an ice cream truck. Suffice it to say there was no more ice cream when the truck was released - just funny colored MUD!

Wow is right!

The Certificate of Need process as it relates to a municipality is a direct challenge to home rule so it will be very interesting to see how this all plays out. For those not familiar with the process: NYS Public Health Law Article 30

For Mt. Vernon it's probably very good. With their turn over they must go through the list pretty fast. Unfortunately with the economy and nobody hiring much right now, it may take a while to get called. Good luck!

No and my fingers are still blistered because of it!!! Cause you can't say "hey stupid" on the radio??? Either that or the Governor's Office established it as the way to track which county something was in. This is interesting trivia.

I just thought it was because DOH is a day late and a number (dollar) short!!!!

Social security numbers have no relationship to the New York County numbering system. If yours is 60 it must be a coincidence. The middle two numbers of an SSN are group numbers with no geographic relevance. The first three numbers indicate where the # was issued.

Presentation by CITY on cuts to FD They did a great job of showing how this won't affect public safety while glossing over the fact that they didn't meet their goal of reducing structural fires (oops). OK, so they "proved" how they're going to do better with less. What happens NEXT year?

Joshua is a suburb of Fort Worth (about 18 miles to the South) and has a population of about 4500. I'm not sure the size of the fire district but the city is 6.5 square miles.

Hey all, I'm enjoying reading this exchange and would like to see it continue MINUS the jabs back and forth about who voted for whom or who supported whom. Let's just concede that we've got four years of this administration and we're not going to change that. And, as has been pointed out on this forum in the past, the President doesn't write the laws! He just signs them so we have Congress to blame for the utterly absurd and wasteful projects, programs and spending that is tacked onto this stimulus package. We may disagree with the President for signing it but I for one will be thinking of all this during the mid-term elections when our Congresspeople are seeking reelection. We now return to our regularly scheduled debate.

hr1_text.pdf Above is the actual bill that was passed on 1/28 by the House. A Senate "compromise" bill is in the works.

Only to a degree??? Yes, there are rules and there are also exceptions to the search warrant requirement of the fourth amendment. One is that a person can consent to a search if he or she so chooses. This is probably what everyone here is referencing with these anecdotes about being asked to submit to a search. If you allow a search, the chips fall where they may. Some interesting exchanges take place during an investigation leading up to a consent search or an arrest pending a warrant, those are the rules of the game and that's how it's played. That doesn't make it a police state and it doesn't give criminals carte blanche. You know what they say, if you walk up to enough people and ask them for something 9 times out of 10 you'll get told NO, but one time you'll get what you want. What's the difference here?
-
Forgive me but I have no idea what or whom you're talking about. As for the stimulus bill, I'm skeptical in general but especially dubious about things such as the new bureacracy in Goose's post. How we're going to recover the economy by increasing taxes and spending is beyond me. Who's paying for this "stimulus"? We all are, are we not? Perhaps this is a good time for government belt tightening and down-sizing - fluff not essential services. Reduce our taxes so we all have more money to spend and that will help the economy.

Not that the discussion about access to municipal and/or health records isn't interesting but the point of this thread is that a paramedic is being charged with assaulting a patient. Not a banner day for EMS. It will be interesting to see if his claim is self-defense especially in light of his partner's comments in the news article. What are your agency's policies on the use of force (in EMS or the FD, obviously not PD)? How about restraints?
