Please tell me she got locked up!!!!
-
I don't remember that exact scenario but there have been many stories like it. During my time on the road I had several instances where someone claimed to be having some sort of medical problem in order to get out of some offense or another. Only once did someone press the issue and actually have me call an ambulance for them. He was in his late teens or early 20's and stopped for doing over 100 in a 45 and he claimed he was rushing himself to the hospital for difficulty breathing. Childhood history of asthma but no meds. I informed him that if he was indeed having difficulty breathing he couldn't drive safely and I would get him an ambulance. Long story short, he RMA'd and got the ticket. One of my favorites was stopping an "MD" enroute to the hospital for an "emergency". Unfortunately he was going in the wrong direction (was aimed at his home though) and wasn't even the radiologist on call that night so he too got an autograph. Lied to? Perhaps sometimes but far less than to the police. When in an EMS uniform I could get people to tell me almost anything (drug use, other activities, etc.) but when in a PD uniform the initial response is always 'NO'. As for the shades of gray, the problem is everything is black and white in the eye of the beholder but to get everyone to agree is near impossible. I also have to agree with crimecop. You can't assume anyone is good; you have to be pleasantly surprised when they turn out to be!

I was wondering how many agencies actually accept the cancellation?

Has the original poster been back to tell us what application the computers are for? Is it CAD interface, e-PCR, or just solitaire between jobs? That will guide us all in answering the question and help us focus on his application for them.

Rest in Peace PO Ciano. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and the Suffolk County PD. Am I the only person who thinks that despite all the political bluster and catchy slogans we're not doing anything to really stop the DWI problem?

My thoughts exactly but I don't dispatch them! Thanks for putting it together Truck4!

I'm kinda with you Barry. I'm partial to the old look but who knows this may grow on us!!!

Jacobi is a regional (level 1) trauma and burn center (adult and pediatric) and has hyperbaric services and venomous bite treatment in case you get burned and bit. As for New Rochelle, it is an area trauma center and doesn't have a burn unit so if my head caught fire it wouldn't be my first choice of destinations. Your line in bold print is the most important point! Though injured, the firefighter wearing that hood will be able to go home!!! Without the hood, he could have suffered disfiguring burns that require multiple surgeries, long sick leave, etc. Captain Benz, please convey our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured brother.

I'd add these to your list: - Support of the University - Massachussetts Health Department (or agency that oversees EMS) approval - Dispatch services (who's actually going to do it if the University PD will not or can not) - Equipment and Supplies You need to seriously crunch the numbers and show the University why this is a great idea. FD response times vs. your response times, number of calls that go mutual aid (longer scene time), total call volume, projected staffing, etc. Get your medical director (assuming that you have one) involved as an advocate for your cause. I'm sure a couple more members will pop in here with some other ideas too. Consider approaching the UPD about one of their retired vehicles. Perhaps they can arrange to turn one over to you so you don't have to invest in a new vehicle. Start small and grow big. If you come in with a 100K budget in this economy you're probably just going to get shot down. But if you can arrange to start it with very modest start-up costs, you have a much better chance of gaining University support. Good luck and keep us posted!

Just don't toss them on the keyboard. You can never get that cleaned up!

I still remember a couple of medics with a full set of ALS gear on an elephant ride at the county fair. Now THAT's a new mode of response. I think the theme that year was Empress Goes Safari! It's OK to say this now. I'm reasonably sure that the guilty parties have successfully entered the witness protection program and the statute of limitations has expired.

Thanks, Tom! Good post.

Please knock off the nonsense. You can't analyze a job from a split second in time captured by a camera. Maybe the waist belt / hood was on just prior to the picture being taken and it was released because they were done with their operations. Maybe the FF was resting up before resuming operations and they took the hood off to avoid heat exhaustion. Maybe they were posing for the picture and wanted to be sure he got their "good side". Thank you YFD guys for seeing humor in this and making light of it rather than reacting defensively and starting a 90 post tear about PPE or who does it better. This is the PHOTO section of the forum. Now I understand why so many people are reluctant to see their incidents or photos posted on the site. If you want to discuss tactics or other things, fine. But please stop nitpicking the stuff like this. Thanks!

Isn't there an exemption in the VTL or Thruway rules and regulations about waiving tolls for emergency vehicles responding onto the toll road?
-
Unless there is an adequate median to accommodate deceleration/accesleration lanes and for vehicles stopped prior to turning, I doubt it. The other issue is they have to be sure to configure it to prevent vehicles from striking the end of the barrier and from crossing over and becoming a wrong way driver. Try checking the Federal Highway rules for such things. Good luck!

Nobody on this forum or anywhere else can dictate what the family's wishes are or what the TV show does. The whole intent of this thread is to show support for the family that lost virtually everything in the plane crash last week. If you agree with the sentiment, sign the petition. If you don't, don't. Your points have been made. Please refrain from jabs at other members who are only trying to do something nice for someone in need. This petition may become nothing more than a small token of support to a grief stricken family. There is no need to tarnish that with inflammatory comments at other members here.

Not at the BLS level. But I'd be sure to check with my insurance carrier to make sure such operation was covered within my policy and/or make sure my agency covered me during such operations.

Methinks it is time to up the standards for a drivers license.

Keep in mind the vastly different cultures at work. There is no (or VERY limited alcohol), interactions between "singles" are severely controlled/monitored, TV is not what you might expect unless you can access satellite services and I don't know if that's possible, and you can't just walk around wearing whatever you feel like. On the flip side, the money is usually very good but to avoid US taxes you probably have to stay out of the Country for at least one calendar year (check with your accountant). As was said, there are pros and cons. You have to decide whether or not you can do it. JD, for those who are interested can you post the link to the announcement.

Harry, Not sure if you meant to reference another section of the Vehicle and Traffic Law but Section 115-C is the definition of an Emergency Ambulance Service Vehicle and has nothing to do with the authority to operate with red lights and siren. Please update us with the citation to which you're referring that "allows fire chiefs to designate anyone to use lights and sirens". The definition of fire vehicle above and the one you reference may not confer the authority for "anyone" to use lights and siren. I would seek legal counsel before taking such a plunge and if you write to the DMV they will respond with a legal interpretation of the statute that may help guide you. Good luck and please post the results of your research here so we can see how it turned out.

Do people really install real fire hydrants as puppy potties? Come on, really? Sounds like the FD should lobby for standards for the fire hydrants and their paint schemes in their district whether in a devleopment or otherwise so decorations can be distinguished from water supply.

What if a property owner said, "forget it, I'm not paying taxes. Send me a bill for services if and when I actually use your department." Sure it's a gamble but I bet the majority of the time, they'd be alright.

The bill should be amended to include all emergency services: police, fire, and EMS and all types of municipalities not simply fire districts. This way all properties are assessed equally for provision of police, fire, and EMS services to them. Great idea but sadly I don't think it will make it either.

Good idea! Check out the list now.
