Interestingly enough, they say that unemployment benefits would not be paid during a state shutdown. I have no idea why that would be but that's what they've been saying.

This thread is reincarnated from another that was perceived to be questionable because it was based upon a specific incident also posted on this site. This thread is GENERIC and/or HYPOTHETICAL and should not be construed to be based upon any recent incident or events regardless of what prompted the question. So, the question is this: When is it appropriate to terminate field resuscitation and who should make the determination to do so? Those who posted in the other thread are invited to re-post their responses so long as they are not specific to any recent incidents or events. Thank you!

If you're talking about the Town PD and it's workload, I'd have to speculate that they can. If you're talking about fire or EMS I'd say that should go to 60-Control and not the County PD. But since I think (and someone else may have said the same thing already) that FD and EMS are dispatched by the Village it won't be an issue. The Village PD's volume probably would be a strain on the Communications Unit but I don't think the town's volume would be.

There will be a rally in Yonkers today at 4:30 PM in front of City Hall to protest the proposed layoffs and cuts to the Police and Fire Departments. Supporters are requested to wear red for the FD or blue for the PD and muster in front of the respective headquarters - 5-7 New School Street for the FD, and 104 South Broadway for the PD. The Yonkers PD PBA put together a video on the subject that can be viewed here: Posted at the request of members of the affected unions.

Wow, very jaded and cynical of you and I'm usually the cynical one. You're saying that 80% of the calls in May weren't covered? That's alot and would certainly explain why the paid crew was needed. Let's do some more hypothetical math (bnechis gives one set of numbers, this will probably be different). Your numbers imply 100% collection which is simply not realistic. Of the 2000 total calls, let's say 25% go to mutual aid. Of the 1500 calls remaining, let's say that 20% result in no transport (unfounded, no patient, RMA, etc.). Now there are 1200 calls with a patient transported. They bill $400 per call x 1200 or $480,000. If they collect 75% (a pretty high percentage and quite unrealistic) the net is $360,000. Operating expenses for Mohegan include fuel, insurance, rent on their building (apparently), equipment, supplies, etc. This must add up to a sizeable chunk of change. Manpower isn't free even if people don't draw a salary. There's insurance, uniforms, personal equipment, workers compensation, etc. The fire district is already receiving tax funds to respond to EMS calls. Many will argue with you that EMS calls are a responsibility of the FD also.

[sigh] Nothing at all is improper about volunteer fire protection. The way I read that is town A shouldn't be forced to subsidize the fire protection in town B. Town A pays all it needs to so that adequate fire protection is provided. Town A could very well be a properly staffed and equipped volunteer fire department; proper coverage is not predicated on paid or volunteer. [/sigh]

Using your line of reasoning, should the arsonist who started the blaze that killed Patrick Joyce be charged with his murder? After all, the FD wasn't even there when the fire was started and fire/smoke wasn't the cause of death. Should we go back to cross examining rape victims about what they were wearing? Your example of a speeding ticket is apples and oranges. If someone physically resists a police officer, they have a much greater responsibility for what happens. Having medical conditions doesn't automatically disqualify someone from being a police or firefighter. Creating a situation that causes the death of a police officer (and others) while committing certain crimes does give rise to a charge of murder so the fact remains that the skell he was running after contributed to his death. Where do we draw the line? The line is already drawn in the law and sadly this guy will probably get away with murder because he only committed a misdemeanor. Had he committed a robbery he could be on the hook for murder. And by the way - traffic offenses are not offenses that could do this.
