  1. You're absolutely right. I was using an absurd and extreme example to highlight the point that technology can't replace judgment.
  2. One of the reasons for that, Goose, and you know this, is because there are those in this profession who don't care about anyone or anything besides themselves and would step over another medic to take their job. There's no solidarity and there's no incentive for employers to increase compensation because the system is so badly fragmented. The article is deceptive because it factors in overtime and represents that as the troopers' base pay. It isn't and with the State not hiring troopers in almost three years there's only going to be more or we're all going to be seeing fewer and fewer troopers out there. Just another in a long line of anti-police articles by the Journal News and their subsidiaries.
  3. I'm not privvy to the long-term plan so I can't comment on what may happen in the future and I'm not going to speculate. However I can correct inaccurate information. I'm not sure what you have pictures of or what you think they prove but I can say with absolute certainty that DES did not fund anything for the helicopter including the bambi-buckets. The justification for allocating the entire year's UASI grant to the helicopter purchase was that the new helicopter would be able to provide assistance to any police, fire, EMS or other first response entity in Westchester County and it does that. Again, wayyyy off topic.
  4. You forgot the NYC DEP that also has jurisdiction in Westchester County. And just for the record, neither Elmsford, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry, or Hastings have jurisdiction on I-87. What's your gripe? Have you been stopped on your boat on the Hudson or are you just generally anti-law enforcement? Every department isn't trying to get a boat. There's a small number of department's that have made the commitment to the river and staff a boat. Every department couldn't do it anyway as the jurisdiction of some municipalities doesn't extend beyond the water or shoreline. As for a job that's "being done good already", what are you referring to? And what team are you reminding us of? And please, for all of us that are actually trying to decipher your posts. Try to use the "SHIFT" button and a period once in a while. It is very difficult understanding your point when you type as you do.
  5. Such is the life of a political appointee. Every time there is a change in elected officials, those in appointed positions run the risk of being replaced, not because they did anything wrong or aren't competent but simply because the new administration will fill the positions with their own. Look at DC every four years. Most of the Executive Branch is replaced by each new president. Every time a Congressperson or Senator is elected they appoint their own new staff.
  6. I agree that getting stopped four times in one trip up the river is problematic but the same thing could happen on the highway too. Interesting point about using technology for the safety inspections but we're not talking about a mechanical inspection as with a vehicle, are we? Let's say that my boat is inspected while being operated by me, a properly trained and licensed boater, two weeks ago and all the safety equipment for me, my wife, and one son is aboard. Today I lend the boat to my friend so he can take his family boating. He, his wife, his mother-in-law, uncle, and five kids all go out with a cooler full of beer but only with my three PFDs. If the PD scanned the boat and it was inspected two weeks ago, what bearing would that have on the way it is being operated today? If my friend wrecks my boat and kills his family, don't you think there would be a firestorm when it was learned that because it was checked two weeks ago it was ignored today because it was inspected two weeks ago?
  7. Just going by the window decals, that would be the Chief of Department's vehicle. 21-1-1. But that's just my observation from the picture.
  8. First of all, this thread is not about rescue calls. It is about law enforcement on the river so the discussion about responses to jumpers, vessels in distress, and/or other waterborne emergencies is way off base. There are no jurisdictional issues with rescue calls so if Yonkers is at the Tappan Zee Bridge or Rockland is at the Tarrytown marina, it is not a jurisdictional matter. As has been stated, rescue calls require a prompt and effective response. It is no different than the FD sending three different boats on the same call. It's about getting help to the person who requires it. If we can get back to the topic of enforcement on the river that would be appreciated.
  9. Isn't Sheriff Bart the Sheriff in Round Rock?
  10. Posted at the request of DES: Individual firefighters should coordinate such requests through their Chief of Department and should not contact DES directly. Your chief may have copies of the certificates in your training file or the originals if they haven't been distributed yet. It would be very difficult for DES to coordinate such requests for 5000 (or so) firefighters in the County. Dealing with 59 different fire chiefs is challenging enough. __________________ On a related note, the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) will not issue any duplicate or replacement certificates for PD training. Given NYS's budget crisis and "cost saving measures" this policy may soon find its way into DHSES too so you may want to make sure you safeguard your certificates and training records. Just something to think about.
  11. I know someone who had a second degree sunburn. Excrutiatingly painful and he too required medical treatment. Sunscreen, anyone?
  12. Date: 08-07-11 Time: 17:32 Location: University Avenue at 45th Street, San Diego, CA Departments: San Diego PD, San Diego County SO, CHP, El Cajon PD Description: A 23 year old San Diego resident went on a crime spree in San Diego yesterday, shooting one civilian in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant before assassinating Police Officer Jeremy Henwood, a 4 year veteran of the SDPD and Marine Corps reserve Captain, by shooting him the head as he sat in his patrol car at an intersection. The suspect drove off, leading another officer on a high speed chase before it was known that he was wanted for murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon. Due to the suspect's reckless driving, that pursuit was terminated. SDPD Aviation picked up the suspect vehicle, observed the suspect place the shotgun back in the vehicle and drive off. Numerous units responded and conducted a high-risk car stop on the vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle and attempted to bring the shotgun up when he was shot and killed by officers from the SDPD. Reports are that this suspect left a suicide note in his apartment and this may have been an elaborate suicide by police. RIP Officer Henwood. Writer: helicopper

  14. Great posts mstrang1 and AJU. Thank you! When I was 21-24, I didn't see the "need" for a degree either. 20+ years later I feel much differently and am glad that I have them. The core skills a degree provides and the application of them in a professional setting makes you a better employee and open more doors for the future. Are there plenty of college educated waiters and waitresses, bartenders, and sales people? Of course. But there are no doctors, lawyers, engineeers, or architects without one. It is ironic that requiring a degree is discriminatory in the fire service but at least an Associate's Degree is a pre-requisite in law enforcement.
  15. Time will tell. The airport is now being managed by the Port Authority so that's a start.
  16. NYS Wildfire and Incident Management Academy - October 21-30, 2011 - Brookhaven National Lab (Suffolk County) This year’s Academy class offerings are once again closely coordinated with position qualification listings found in PMS 310-1 Wildland and Prescribed Fire Qualifications System Guide and/or those same requirements listed in FSH 5109.17 Fire and Aviation Management Qualifications Handbook. Before signing up for a course(s), the Academy's staff recommends that students take the following steps. • Consult with your supervisor to determine appropriate course(s) to take. • Review the position and training requirements that govern your agency’s fireline qualifications rating system. • Become familiar with task book and on the job training requirements for fireline positions. Programs include a variety of wildfire courses and the entire series of ICS Command and General Staff position courses. 17. Thank you for your opinion however we have specific policies dealing with IA's and they are what are to be followed. Inappropriate IA's are removed by the staff as they are encountered. If you read an IA and consider it inappropriate, use the "REPORT" button to flag it for a more expeditious staff review.
  18. Odds are that most of the buyers will be us - first responders. Of course people are using the event for their own gains. The same is true of the Haiti earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, and the Japan earthquake and tsunami. Some people will always try to make a buck at the expense of someone else.
  19. Apples and oranges. Cops are trained to neutralize a threat posed by humans using deadly physical force. Deer anatomy is different and if you apply the same theory (aim for center mass) you won't hit anything vital in a deer. Hunters train to drop deer. Cops train to drop bad guys. Big difference.
  20. The airport has definitely expanded beyond what was envisioned when the terminal was built. As for Somers, Croton, Mahopac, Ramapo (Spring Valley) or any of the other strips that were in our area, none were or could be big enough for the kind of commercial traffic we're talking about.
  21. Fascinating that they're recruiting from outside the state. I wonder if that means they can't find enough applicants within the state.
  22. Don't take it so literally. Eyewitnesses are notoriously unreliable so his statement that he heard it and then felt it may not be correct. That's how his brain told him he should interpret it so that's how he remembers it.
  23. An even more fundamental question is why do people call the police to euthanize animals in the first place? How is this a police function? Unless it is a properly trained specialized unit/resource with the proper equipment, this is what's going to happen when you give a patrol cop, with patrol equipment, this assignment.
  24. Date: 07-22-11 Time: approx 1300 Location: Downtown Oslo and Island Youth Camp in Utoya Norway Departments: Norwegian Authorities Description: Two near simultaneous terrorist attacks in Norway. First a large car-bomb (being compared to the likes of OKC) was detonated in downtown Oslo. Approximately 35 minutes later, a male suspect dressed as a police officer opened fire at a youth camp on an island in Utoya. 87 confirmed dead thus far, dozens more injured. suspect in shooting in custody and investigation ongoing Links: everywhere Writer: helicopper
  25. If the pavement markings or signage prohibits it, it may be illegal to change lanes on a bridge but there is no blanket law applying to bridges (in NYS). On many of the TBTA bridges and tunnels there are pavement markings and signage making lane changes illegal so people bouncing from lane to lane to pass like a moron is enforceable. Bottom line, use good judgement and common sense.
