What really is ridiculous is the judge had no basis to rule on current list. Lawsuit stems from 1999 and 2002 tests. This list is the 2007 test and this judge should have no control on hiring. If he rules for the 1999 and 2002 tests then something should be worked out for the people involved. I am happy the city said no, I am tired of hearing about all this, it is not difficult to take and pass the test and then a physical and medical. You have to want the job not be handed it. I hope that the city wont turn around and use OT costs and such to try to close firehouses or reduce manning in future, I am sure they have a plan in place and will blame judge and so on.

If you watched news conference Bloomberg stated that they are going to reduce the 60 Engines that have 5 man manning to 4 man in January. This has to be negotiated but it seems like this is going to happen and the council has agreed to amend the law reagding the alarm boxes which also will be removed. At least we have been spared closings but the manning reduction is going to have impact also.

I believe all FDNY aerials are now medium duty rated. The old Seagraves were considered light duty. From the mid 90's is when the change started to medium duty, the older seagraves were cable and drum, now the newer are all hydraulic no more ladder locks and so on. FDNY had 4 heavy duty Seagrave 110' aerials in 89 and 90, they never purchased any after the initial 4, started getting the medium duty after that. L-4,38,49 & 165 had the 110' aerials.

FDNY has issues with the cat tails system originally added to new design, these are aerialscopeII units and have been modified from original. The cat tails were removed and a different system used, also the boom was greaseless and FDNY spec's greaseable. These issues were discussed on a previous thread. The first unit is on seagraves website as a demo, this was refused as i understand it by FDNY. The delays also stem from problems with the 06 Towers which lead to the aerialscopeII design, if anyone knows more please add

L-46 prior apparatus was ST9703 and was one of the oldest TL'S still in service. This new batch of TL'S will replace the remaining 97 units and then move on through years 98,99 and 2000. I hope to post pictures when i return from vacation of compartments and set up of equipment. As for the 10 year replacement this unit and the others were way overdue but due to manufacture issues and changes needed to TL design these units were delayed a few times.

I thought the order was for 80 total 40 Fire and 40 EMS units, not sure if any fire have been delivered and put in service.

FDNY is 10 years on gear use color coded tags on front to depict issue year. As stated of course it depends on wear and other factors, gear is inspected during semi annual cleaning and removed if found to have defects and replaced.

Ok to clear this up for those who do not have this pumper, the bottom soft suction is for Hydrant use only, it is larger in diameter than the standard hydrant connection due to the 2000 gpm capacity. The other 3 are all 6" connections 2 flexi and 1 hard, on the Officers side of this apparatus is a 6" draft only hook up. As stated these are in case of another attack and mains are knocked out we can draft from whatever source we can find. The pumpers are assigned throughout the FDNY not to a specific area. There is only one draft only connection on this pumper.

Will let you know when 46 gets the new rig, right now they are using a 95 spare due to the old 9703 needing some repairs. They havent received any dates yet for training on the new piece. Probably mid-april or end of april before it arrives.

Excellent reply Chief however do all YFD Engines have similiar hosebeds, I know they use preconnected lines since they forward layin. Are all Engines going to LDH for supply or remaining with dual 3 1/2 for supply. I understand the time issues you state but sometimes a 2 1/2 line is necessary due to volume of fire and need for maximum water. I have seen many jobs and am amazed at the work your men do with 1 officer and 3 firefighters, maybe the old stigma can be erased and attention to working together or having 2nd engine relay water will become reality. Be safe and take care of your men.

Last picture I took as I had to leave, fire still roaring in cockloft and top floor, taken from north side of fire.

Fire starting to vent through the roof

Still pushing the heavy smoke throughout the cornice and top floor

Water flowing into top floor

Due to length of stretches required into our multiple dwellings we pair the first and second due engines to get the 1st line into operation whether they are 4or5man units they pair up. In the situation on Decatur short stretches due to frame buildings 3story it may be 1st engine 1st line 2nd engine 2nd line due to amount of fire. We also pair up engines in high rise due to need for 4 or more lengths depending on building. In my area some stretches require 14 to 16 lengths to reach fire, we average 8 to 10 lengths and this depends on floor fire is on, access to entrance, distance from courtyard into entrance, size of building and so on. We have some buildings that require all first alarm engines to assist in placing 1st line into operation.

If you look carefully you see 2 handlines being stretched off E-79 both look like 1 3/4 lines. You can have 2 lines off 1 pumper. The newer 2000 gpm pumpers can handle more than 2 lines if needed, it is always a good idea to have another pumper ready to supply handlines in case of pump failure or hydrant issues. Cannot tell from video if fire was in a building and spread to exposure or if fire started between buildings, if in a building the first line goes to the fire, the second could be used to give a quick exterior knockdown before advancing into the exposure being careful not to put any water into the original fire building, this could cause problems for members on first handline. It appears that the fire had already extended into the exposure so getting the line into this building was necessary. Ok so 1st line into original building 2nd line to exposure and if possible charge in street to knock down auto exposure otherwise in building, additional lines will be stretched to the area between buildings and other exposures. 1st truck has original fire building, 2nd due should take the exposure in this scenario due to rapid extension of fire. Additional trucks will be used in both buildings to assist. From what i heard this fire was quickly contained and extinguished with no other extension to any buildings.

CTS= Chauffuer Training School, these rigs are used to train Chauffeurs at school they do not get assigned for field use. This is the first Seagrave Marauder Pumpers received, this was used to train the units that received these new units. The Newest Tower Ladders are coming in and the first is also marked CTS. It will be used for training chauffeurs and units that receive this type apparatus.

Chief Flynn you are right about the amount of fire at this job, the whole rear looked like a fireball from broadway as we responded up. I wish politics would take a back seat to life threatening issues such as fire responses, but that is something no one can change. Both departments continue to work together, thanks for the input.

JFLYNN i am not sure that our BC got too involved in this incident, I was at the scene and tried to convince the BC to get us involved but as you say you have your system for mutual aid and if you asked the approval would have to come from an FDNY staff chief on duty, a timely process to say the least. It would be easier if there was a mutual aid system for a fire like this in southern yonkers where FDNY is closer than county resources. I know Yonkers had their hands full due to volume of fire and this location and that the response times must have been long it only seems right to have some sort of agreement in place. We did answer a few more smoke in the area calls in north riverdale that night. Your guys did a great job under extreme conditions that night.

FDNY did respond to the Bronx River Road job, also used up on Oak Street fire that had multiple DOA's. These are the only incidents other than FF Joyce funeral coverage that FDNY has been in Yonkers in the last few years as far as I remember.
