  1. ESS has 10 units running out of precincts, two in each borough, except for Brooklyn which has 3. Each Unit runs up to 4 REP's (Adam through David) and one big rig. There are also TRV's, MALT, etc., running out of those units. ESU has expanded since 2001 and after Sam Katz' book. Officers are also distributed in conditions assignments, Hercules, Hammer and other teams for manpower and security details. ESU is also working with Harbor, Aviation and have a Haz Mat unit. When you hear a job given to one unit it is because they are the primary, meaning that they are the rig covering that precinct. It does not mean only one unit is responding and also does mean that patrol units are likely already enroute. Depending on the job, the P.O.'s assigned to the big rig will bring whatever's needed from base.

  4. Date: 12-3-06 Time: 0116hrs Location: Edwards Ave and Vine St. Departments: Description: Heavy fire in a P/D with a gas explosion. (5) firefighters and (1) police officer injured. Writer: Truck4 "One firefighter remains hospitalized today and crews were still battling flames eight hours after a house fire in San Jose spread to a natural gas main and caused an explosion, injuring six at the scene. Five firefighters and a police officer were injured in the struggle to contain the blaze, which began at 1:16 a.m. on Edwards Avenue between Vine Street and South Almaden Avenue, according to the San Jose Fire Department. No injuries to residents were reported, but the house was destroyed. Five of the six injured public safety personnel have been treated and released. The firefighter who remains hospitalized suffered a back injury after being thrown back by the blast wave of natural gas exploding, which happened an hour into the response, a San Jose fire dispatcher said. Homes in the surrounding area were evacuated overnight as firefighters, police officers and hazardous materials specialists descended on the location. Flames worsened as gas from the main fed the fire. For hours, firefighters were in a "surround" mode but were unable to quell the gas-fed flames. A spokesman for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said the home's gas meter was turned off early on in the fight. After the unexpected explosion, firefighters requested that the utility close off the underground gas main, which required extensive digging with heavy equipment, PG&E's Matt Havlik said. The main has now been shut off, Havlik said, allowing firefighters a chance to extinguish the fire altogether."
  5. I used to cover all the big holiday houses at my old job. It's been years since I've seen these displays, but maybe some members can verify if they still have them and correct the addresses: Armonk- Off 128, maybe Cobblers Lane? The house you had to park and walk up the driveway. They had a big sign out front with the rules and shut off times. Harrison- Near Oakland and Parsons. White Plains- Briga Lane off Mamaroneck Ave. Used to be incredible, 15 houses on one block. Last time I saw it, half the houses had nothing up. This should be the one youre talking about Stick. Yonkers- Highview Terrace, off Hall Pl., Nepperhan Ave X Roberts Ave, Scarsdale Road just north of Cristfield St. New Rochelle- Off Wilmont Road, maybe Retiro Lane or Turner Drive? Took my nephews the last couple of years, should still be there. Bronx- The houses off Pelham Parkway, never been there but see it on the news every year. The Bronx Zoo- Actually a very cool display and worth the trip. I know of a few in North Jersey, right over the GWB. I'll post if you want.

  7. http://www.nbc4.tv/news/10439605/detail.html?dl=mainclick Los Angeles fire Chief William Bamattre announced Friday that he will step down as fire chief on Jan. 1. Bamattre issued a statement saying he submitted his resignation to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. He has scheduled a news conference for Friday afternoon to discuss his departure. His departure would make him the highest-level casualty of a racial discrimination lawsuit stemming from a prank that firefighters played on a black colleague in 2004. Bamattre "became a liability for the department and the city," an official who asked not to be identified told the newspaper. The chief's fate became tied in recent days with the case of Tennie Pierce, a black firefighter whose spaghetti sauce was laced with dog food at his Westchester station. Pierce, an African American who had been nicknamed "Big Dog," said he was humiliated by the incident and became the object of discrimination after complaining about it. His lawyers and city attorneys agreed on a $2.7 million settlement, which the City Council initially approved. But after KFI-AM (640) radio show hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou posted photographs online of Pierce himself engaging in apparent hazing, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa vetoed the deal, and his veto was upheld. The case may come to court in March. The controversy drew focus on a culture Bamattre had vowed to address. But audits in 1994 and again this year found that minorities and women in the agency complained they had seen or heard of racism in the department. Councilman Jack Weiss, chairman of the council's Public Safety Committee, and Controller Laura Chick this week called for the firing of Bamattre, who was selected to be interim chief in 1995 to serve as a reformer. City Hall officials, including Fire Commission President Dalila T. Sotelo, have contacted firefighter groups asking for names of candidates for interim chief, sources told The Times. Those submitted include Assistant Chief Doug Berry of the Fire Prevention Bureau and veteran Battalion Chief Millage Peaks, according to the newspaper. Both Berry and Peaks, who are African American, reportedly are well respected. The department has never had a black chief. Bamattre told The Times in recent interviews that his problem was having to change a culture that did not want to change and having too few tools to do the job. Earlier this week, Bamattre told council members at a hearing that the maximum punishment he could impose was 30 days' suspension -- something that did not give him sufficient authority to root out persistent attitudes. The chief won support for that position this morning from black community activist Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, who described Bamattre as a "scapegoat." "The resignation of L.A. Fire Chief William Bamattre reflects the continued failure of the mayor, the city council, and the fire commission to change the culture of discrimination and harassment endemic in the L.A. City Fire Department," Hutchinson said in a statement. "Bamattre is a scapegoat for that failure..." Hutchinson said that if the mayor, the City Council and the fire commission are serious about reforming the department, "they must give the new chief the tools necessary to make the changes. That includes increased disciplinary and firm management controls to root out the culture of discrimination and harassment."

  9. http://www.theroyalgazette.com/apps/pbcs.d.../NEWS/111300132 Bermuda’s three fire departments are to be unified to form a national fire service as from April 2007. After 76 years of existence the volunteer St. George Fire Brigade is to be relegated to the pages of history, along with the Bermuda International Airport fire service. Both will be absorbed into the Bermuda Fire Service to form a comprehensive emergency service that will span the Island. After years of discussion and a lengthy study to see if such an arrangement might work it has been decided the way forward is to have one amalgamated fire service. Residents of St. George’s were told the news at a public meeting that attracted around 120 people to Penno’s Wharf last night.

Steve Favela, 30, and two other officers crashed their cycles as the presidential motorcade was traveling across Hickam Air Force Base to meet troops for breakfast early Tuesday. The other officers were treated at The Queen's Medical Center and released. Favela, an eight-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department and father of four, had suffered internal injuries and had been listed in critical condition at the medical center.
