Date: 03-23-07 Time: 1700hrs Location: 4100 block of Bernal Drive X Highway 12 Description: Officers in pusuit of a vehicle wanted in connection of a homicide when suspect lost control of the vehicle. As Officers approached the car, the suspect shot and killed Senior Cpl. Mark Nix. Suspect was removed from vehicle by SWAT. Police officials identified the officer as Senior Cpl. Mark Timothy Nix, 33, who had been with the department since June 2000. He was also a veteran of the Gulf War, NBC 5 reported. Police identified the shooting suspect Saturday as Wesley Lynn Ruiz, who police said is a known gang member from Dallas with a history of drug arrests. The shooting happened in the 4100 block of Bernal Drive near Loop 12 in Dallas. The chase began around 5 p.m. when officers spotted a car matching the description of a vehicle from a murder at a drug house Thursday in Oak Cliff, police said. When police tried to pull Ruiz over, he sped off. The short chase ended in a West Dallas neighborhood when the suspect lost control of his car. The police car and the suspect's car ended up front bumper to front bumper. Police said Ruiz refused officers' orders to exit his vehicle, and when Nix tried to break out the window, they said Ruiz opened fire from inside. Six other officers that were on the scene fired rounds, but Nix was not able to shoot back, police said. Rush-hour traffic prevented ambulances from promptly responding; so another officer drove the victim to the hospital, Cerda said. Nix was put in the back of a patrol car and rushed to Parkland Hospital, as a rookie officer with training as an EMT tried to help during the ride, authorities said. Ruiz was slumped down inside a car that Chopper 5 video showed was riddled with bullets. Dozens of officers with guns drawn had surrounded the vehicle before SWAT officers removed him from the car at about 7 p.m. Paramedics took the man from the scene in an ambulance. The standoff lasted about two hours. Police spokesman Vernon Hale said the car's dark, tinted windows initially prevented officers from knowing how many people were inside. Police said Ruiz was transported to Parkland Hospital where he is listed in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries. An assault weapon was found in the suspect's vehicle, police said. Nix was pronounced dead at Parkland Hospital, Sgt. Gil Cerda said. He leaves behind a fiancee from Lewisvile, and his parents and sister in Cleburne. “We are providing counseling for the officers here,” he said. “It’s just a very hard time for us.” Police said Saturday that Ruiz is not a suspect in Wednesday's murder in Oak Cliff, and said that Ruiz purchased the vehicle thought to be associated with the crime, in the days following that murder. Ruiz faces charges of capital murder, four counts of aggravated assault on police officers and drug possession, police said.

P.O. Daniel Martinez, 33, shot in the head and killed by a suspect on a domestic. Martinez had served for several years with the Poteau and Panama police departments in LeFlore County in Oklahoma before becoming police chief in Shady Point and taking the same job in Wister, both also in far eastern Oklahoma. He joined the Fort Smith Police Department on July 3.

Officer Daniel C. Martinez, 33, who had served as a police officer in Oklahoma for many years before joining Fort Smith police last year, was shot in the head Friday evening and Donna Stevens, 22, was shot in the back, shoulder and elbow, police spokesman Sgt. Jarrard Copeland said in a news release Saturday. Richard Englebright, 26, the suspect and the brother of Stevens' former boyfriend, fled from the home in a car and killed himself before Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers found him near Spiro, Okla., Copeland said. Martinez was taken to Sparks Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Stevens, who was shot as she was running from the residence, was taken to Saint Edward's Hospital before being air lifted to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center in Little Rock. Copeland said Stevens and her ex-boyfriend, Bobby Englebright, 24, had had a dispute earlier Friday at the residence and he was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and battery. He was jailed in the Sebastian County Jail, Copeland said. About 9:24 p.m. that same day, Martinez was dispatched to the home to help Stevens, who had asked for an officer to accompany her while she picked up her baby. Martinez met Stevens in a parking lot next to the residence, and they walked to the front door. Richard Englebright came to the door, told them to wait a minute, then shut the door, Copeland said. Englebright then returned with a 9MM handgun and shot the police officer, then shot Stevens, Copeland said. Richard Englebright fled in a black Dodge Neon toward Arkoma, Okla. Copeland did not say whether the child was in the home. NYSP picked up vehicle south of Harriman and continued down the Thruway and over the Tappan Zee Bridge. At one point, suspect rammed an NYSP car. Suspect continued east on I-287 to the southbound Sprain Brook Parkway on (3) wheels. Once in Yonkers, suspect continued onto the southbound Bronx River Parkway and attempted to ram YPD ESU Truck 4. Suspect then collided with a NYSP car and crashed into the barrier. Perp tried to again flee and was boxed in by ESU Truck 2 and Truck 4. MTA PD took custody of perp, who was transported by Empress to hospital. No officers were injured.

(2) drivers killed, including (1) that was parked on the shoulder and outside his rig at the time. Writer: Truck4 From The Journal News 3/14: The Accident occurred 2:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Thruway, three miles south of Exit 16. State police said autopsy reports might help them piece together the moments before the fatal crash, which also seriously damaged two tractor-trailers and stopped traffic on the Thruway's northbound lanes for nine hours. So far police have determined that John Johnson, 27, of Baltimore was driving a tractor-trailer north on the Thruway just after 2 a.m. when he hit a guardrail, swerved to regain control and then slammed into a tractor-trailer parked on the right shoulder. The collision caused the parked tractor-trailer's rear wheels to run over Gary Akehurst, 57, of Fallston, Md., who had gotten out of the truck, police said. Johnson's tractor-trailer skidded to the left and then burst into flames just below the Arden Station Road bridge over the Thruway, police said. Both men died at the crasah scene. Their bodies were taken to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital for autopsies. "We have absolutely no idea what caused it," said Zone Sgt. James Whittel of the state police, who was at the scene of the accident. "We are hoping the autopsy will give us a little more information." Whittel said the autopsy could show whether Johnson suffered a heart attack or dozed off when the accident occurred. Routine blood-alcohol tests would be performed, Whittel said, but he didn't expect anything unusual to show up. Whittel said reputable trucking companies frequently perform random drug and alcohol tests on their employees, and he expected such was the case with New England Motor Freight. "We'll only be able to rule things out. We won't be able to say what caused it," Whittel said. Maryland state police and Baltimore police informed the families of the victims at noon yesterday. Further details about the victims were unavailable. Autopsy results were not expected for a while, Whittel said. The probe into the crash is being carried out by Investigator Ricky Peets from the state police at New burgh. New York State Police blocked the northbound lanes to allow the tractor-trailers to be cleared and for the state Department of Environmental Conservation to clear hazardous material. One tractor-trailer was carrying home improvement material, some of which was hazardous.
