Pics of the Corpo Civici Pompieri in Lugano, Switzerland. Similar to other European countries, they run out of large, regional fire stations. This station in Vignola houses 18 rigs in two buildings- One with 10 bays and one with 4. Switzerland, like Italy, has a national fire service. All thier stations are regional with platoon-type staffing. They run 4-5 men per rig on the front-line engines. Units are mission specific, as you can see with the ladder, and they see little structural fire. Also as with Italy, these stations run a smaller engine for narrow streets (pic above). For runs in those areas, they'll split the crew and take two engines.

Philadelphia is facing an $8 Million shortfall, compared to the $16 claimed by Yonkers and is closing 5 Engines and 2 Ladders. There are NO layoffs, no station closings and no demotions. No talk of give-backs yet either. They also made sure to mention that structural fires were down 60% since 1990 and EMS runs are up 96% during the same period. Philly is also closing 1 Police Station, eliminating the DARE program and several hundred unfilled positions in the department. http://phillyfirenews.com/Gm08-135.pdf

The dozen front-line apparatus include 5 Engines and 2 Trucks housed in the main building facing the street. The rigs are two deep in some bays: Secondary apparatus (Haz-Mat, Rescue, Utility) are in a 4-bay building the rear of the complex.

The Dodge is basically a utility vehicle. It is equipped for roadblocks, flooding, fire prevention and extra SCBA among other things.

The Mayor will be announcing his cuts tomorrow, reportedly 5% across the board for fiscal year 2008/09 which runs through June 2009. YPD will be cutting some specialized details/units, including School Resource Officers (cops in the schools) and some Street Crime Unit officers. The talk is that the department will be reassigning 48 cops back into uniform patrol to eliminate scheduled OT. Promotions scheduled for this week were canceled indefinitely.
