The home on Leighton Ave. had the front door nailed shut, window bars and clutter piled 5-feet high inside. 8) NEW ROCHELLE- April 12, 2008 A lightning strike caused a fire that took the lives of a popular Rabbi and his wife. The NRFD arrived to find the house well-off and recovered the couple ninety minutes later. 7) SLEEPY HOLLOW- August 31, 2008 Police and Fire boats from Westchester and Rockland counties responded to a tug boat fire just north of the Tappan Zee bridge. The tug ‘Donald C.’ prevented the disabled barge from a collision with the Tappan Zee with just minutes to spare. 6) MOUNT VERNON- December 2008 Short a ladder company and on the heels of controversy surrounding a group of new cadets, Mount Vernon firefighters faced 8 structure fires in the month of December. 5) SLEEPY HOLLOW- April 23, 2008 More than 150 firefighters from 14 departments responded to a fire in a row of businesses and apartments on Beekman Ave. The fire completely destroyed one building and left over two dozen homeless. Discussion thread 3) SCARSDALE- April 3, 2008 Scarsdale firefighters responded to a gas leak and removed a construction crew from the home minutes before it was leveled by an explosion. Scarsdale was hosting a Haz Mat refresher course with other area departments that also responded to the incident. 2) LOWER WESTCHESTER- August 15, 2008 A severe storm swept across Southern Westchester causing heavy damage through Yonkers, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle and The Pelhams. Complete with large hail and a funnel cloud, the storm caused a multi-alarm fire at New Rochelle High School and over a half-dozen departments to respond south for mutual aid. Additional IA for NRHS Fire 1) MOUNT VERNON- March 28, 2008 Mount Vernon firefighters, along with four mutual aid departments, battled a fire in a chemical warehouse. The surrounding neighborhood was evacuated and members required decontamination during the Haz Mat incident that lasted several days.
