Date: 2-16-06 Time: 0650hrs Location: 1200 Oak Park Drive Departments: Dallas SWAT, Dallas PD, DEA Description: (4) SWAT officers shot during warrant execution. Writer: Truck4 4 officers shot in South Dallas Four experienced Dallas SWAT officers were in good condition Thursday after they were shot with a high-powered rifle while attempting to serve a drug warrant in the Red Bird area. Two men, a woman and a juvenile were taken into custody, police said. At a news conference at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Chief David Kunkle said the officers were able to talk and "in good spirits." "They're still doing medical tests, but it appears there may have not been any broken bones or permanent injuries associated with the gunshot wounds," he said, noting that they all had worn bulletproof vests and helmets. "We believe we were very, very fortunate, because it appears that all of the injuries are very, very treatable." As of noon, three officers had been released from Parkland. Sr. Cpl. Dale Hackbarth, who suffered a leg injury, was being kept overnight for observation, police said. Police said the officers were attempting to serve a warrant with the Drug Enforcement Administration during what is known as a "knock and announce" operation at a one-story brick home in the 1200 block of Oak Park Drive. Wounded officers Sr. Cpl. Harry Deltufo Service time: 16 years Injury: ear Sr. Cpl. Dale Hackbarth Service time: 21 years Injury: leg Sr. Cpl. Adolfo Perez Service time: 10 years Injury: chest Sgt. Kenneth Wilkins Service time: 24 years Injury: hand They arrived at the home, which is surrounded by a 6-foot iron fence, about 6:50 a.m. in an armored personnel carrier. They announced via loudspeaker that they were going to deliver the arrest and search warrant. As the officers approached the door, shots were fired from inside the house, police said. "We’re trying to determine right now if one individual was shooting or more," Lt. Rick Watson said. At that point, an officer crashed the vehicle through the fence, ripping the concrete supports from the ground. He maneuvered the carrier between the downed officers and the house and pulled them to safety. Then a chemical agent was released into the house to flush them out, Lt. Watson said. Another police official, who did not wish to be identified, noted that the officers already had been to the home of an associate. When the police pulled up in front of the Oak Park home, "they felt that he knew they were coming," she said. "The officers did return fire," she said. One suspect was injured and taken to Methodist Hospital, police said. Residents in the tidy, middle-class neighborhood described being awakened by gunshots. Latasha Brown, 29, was leaving her home to drive her children to school when the bullets started coming through the windows. "A lot of police officers were trying to get into the house," Ms. Brown said. "They were pounding the door. You could hear windows breaking and everything going crazy. They were yelling, ‘Get down. Get on the ground. Get down.’" "I heard three or four gunshots back to back," said neighbor Teresa Duran, 38. "I was like, ‘Wait. You never hear that around here.’ Then I heard more shots. Then I thought, ‘Wait. That’s no flat tire.’" Levette Grant, 25, lives directly across the street from the home where the shooting took place. "Pop. Pop. Pop. It sounded just like firecrackers. I went outside, but they told me to go back in and I watched from my dining room window," she said. "I saw one officer crouched over my brother’s car holding his wrist and there was blood."

More on what supposedly happened inside the house- 9 News has learned an investigation is underway into why Prince George's County Firefighters were fighting more than fires early Monday morning. Departmental reports obtained by 9 News include claims by two career firefighters that someone deliberately shut off their air tanks and ripped off some of their protective gear while they fought the house fire on Standish Drive in Landover Hills. The two firefighters, assigned to the Landover Hills station, received first and second degree burns. The reports claim that firefighters from the all-volunteer Kentland Station got into a battle over who was going to put out the fire. One of the burned men, Captain John O'Brien wrote: "In all my years in the fire service, I have never seen so much 'on the scene' violence in the workplace, unprofessionalism and [disobedience] from other firefighters. How can we do our jobs when we have to look over our shoulders and worry about someone shutting off our air supply, ripping off our face pieces and helmets, and other unsafe acts?" Volunteer firefighters from other stations that responded to the fire reported similar problems with the Kentland crew. The Kentland Volunteer Fire Department tells 9 News it is cooperating with the investigation. Prince George's County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady says an internal investigation is underway. Brady confirms that one of three firefighters involved in a related fight outside the burning home is on operational suspension. The chief of the Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department believes the allegations and attacks are serious enough to warrant a criminal investigation.

Something everybody, police, fire and EMS, should keep in mind. Firefighters Take Icy Plunge Snow Covers Backyard Pool BURKE, Va. -- Two Fairfax County firefighters fell into a swimming pool early Tuesday morning while fighting a fire. Officials said firefighters were called to fight a blaze about 1:45 a.m. in the 9500 block of Burning Branch Road in Burke, Va. Fire department spokesman Lt. Raul Castillo said first arriving units found heavy fire on the first floor of the home and immediately called for a second alarm. Castillo said when two firefighters went to the rear of the home to assess the situation, one firefighter fell into the icy pool. Officials said the second firefighter fell in when he went to the aid of the first firefighter. Castillo said the firefighters didn't know the pool was there. He said the pool was covered with a tarp, which was also covered with snow. The two firefighters were quickly removed from the pool and taken to a firehouse so they could change into warm clothes. Castillo said Fairfax County requires at least a 4-foot fence around pools with a self-closing, self-latching door and a power safety cover.

http://www.nbc4.com/news/7052432/detail.html Firefighters Allegedly Fight While Battling Blaze Firefighters Suspended, Incident Caught On Tape LANDOVER HILLS, Md. -- Three volunteer firefighters have been suspended for allegedly getting into a fight while battling a fire in Prince George's County. County fire spokesman Mark Brady said volunteers from three companies, Landover Hills, Kentlands and Bladensburg, responded to a fire Monday morning in the 6900 block of Standish Drive in Landover Hills. Brady said one of the volunteers parked a fire truck on the hose of another company, setting off the fight which apparently was caught on tape. Three volunteer firefighters, two from the Bladensburg Fire Company and one from Kentlands, were suspended. Officials said the firefighters were "pushing and shoving" each other outside the burning house. The fire department is investigating the incident. Brady also said the fire department is investigating an allegation of another scuffle inside the house where two career firefighters suffered minor burns. The fire was extinguished in a timely fashion, according to officials. There were no other injuries. The blaze was caused by an unattended candle and caused about $30,000 in damage.
