Date: 2-28-06 Time: 2245hrs Location: 125 Gardenside Dr. Departments: SFFD Description: Heavy fire in a 4-story 50X100 OMD. Writer: Truck4 Residents flee blaze at Twin Peaks summit Steve Rubenstein, Chronicle Staff Writer Firefighters battled hot spots Tuesday from a four-alarm fire that swept through a four-story apartment building near the summit of Twin Peaks in San Francisco. The blaze, which broke out Monday around 10:45 p.m. at 125 Gardenside Drive in the middle of a fierce windstorm, sent dozens of residents fleeing into the street in their pajamas, clutching their cats, dogs and photo albums. There were no injuries, but 10 apartment units were badly damaged by flames, smoke and water, Fire Department Lt. Mindy Talmadge said. Firefighters had to beat a temporary retreat after wind gusts enabled the blaze to spread across the rooftop. Kurt Hilden was home with his cocker spaniel, Jack, when the building alarm went off. "I said to Jack, 'Let's go,' and we got out,'' Hilden said. "We watched the fire and couldn't believe it. It looked like the Fire Department had it under control, then the wind picked up and it was so strong the fire just got away.'' Kathleen Swindler grabbed her two cats, Dana and Neko, and stuffed them in a box. Then she climbed through her second-story bedroom window, where a firefighter helped her climb down a ladder. On Tuesday, she went back to her apartment to retrieve her most precious possession -- a 2-foot-tall stuffed snowman that she has had since she was 5. Resident Gail Zatcoff said she couldn't believe how fast the fire spread through the yellow stucco building. "It was very, very windy and the wind was just blowing the fire across the roof,'' she said. "I thought the firefighters would get it, but they didn't.'' Firefighters contained the blaze in about 90 minutes. Ten residents have been given temporary shelter through the Red Cross.

New report from the US Fire Administration: Structure Fire Response Times Submitted 02/27/2006 The United States Fire Administration released the Structure Fire Response Times report from the National Fire Data Center. The study is based on data from 2001 and 2002 and examines general trends as well as regional, season, and time of day trends. The report concludes that structure fire response times are generally less than 5 minutes;** that the nationwide response time is less than 11 minutes; that structure fires in the Northeast have the lowest response times while those in the West have the highest; and that average structure fire response times show a relationship between flame spread and longer response times, but only after flames have spread beyond the room of origin. **Regardless of size of department, career or volunteer status http://knxas1.hsdl.org/hslog/?q=node/2617

Motorcycle officer Gregory John Bailey, 36, was killed by a drunk driver on Interstate 15 near State Highway 395 in Hesperia, about 80 miles east of Los Angeles shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday. He was the sixth CHP officer killed in the line of duty in the last five months. "We have talked about this way too often here recently and now we mourn the death of officer John Bailey," CHP Commissioner Mike Brown said at a news conference. "Never in the history of the Highway Patrol have we seen this type of tragedy, with the number of events that we have seen in this short period of time." A 10-year veteran of the Highway Patrol, Bailey had been back on duty for just a few months after serving for 14 months in Iraq with the Army National Guard. "The California Highway Patrol has lost another family member in what has been a tragic few months," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement. In the most recent CHP death, 36-year-old officer Earl Scott was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop on Feb. 17 near Modesto. Bailey was survived by his wife and four children.

This comes up in conversation from time to time. Canon does not make a cover for the LCD screen like Nikon. LCD screens are one of the most expensive parts of the digital camera. In speaking with my camera repair specialist, the most prone to damage screens are on point and shoot digitals, Nikon in particular. He has seen few, if any, broken/damaged LCD's on digital SLR's. Since the question comes up about covers for Canon digital SLR's, here's the link to the company advertised in most trade magazines. http://www.hoodmanusa.com/flip_up.asp#canon
