8-30-06 Officials said Officer John A.J. Schroeder, along with the 1st district vice, was serving the warrant to a Wilson Santiago in the 2,000 block of West 98th near Madison Avenue when the shooting occurred. Officials said Santiago opened the door and then slammed it shut and then fired the shots through the door. Officials said the Schroeder, a 10-year veteran, was wearing a bullet-proof vest, but the bullet struck him under the arm pit. Officers returned fire, but the suspect was not shot. Schroeder was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he died. Schroeder has a 8-month-old boy and he is married. He is also from the Pittsburgh area. Santiago, 37, who was a rape and burglary suspect, is in police custody. The suspect fired two shots, but it is unclear how many shots were returned by law enforcement agents. The arrest warrant charges stem from crimes allegedly committed on West 100th Street, also involved kidnapping. Santiago has not been charged yet. He has an extensive criminal history involving weapons and assault, officials said. Four police officers have died in the last 10 years in the line of duty. The last officer was killed six years ago. Officer Wayne Leon was killed in June 2000. Quisi Bryant was convicted in connection with his death. Bryant is on death row. Officer Robert Clark was killed in the line of duty in 1998. Hilary Cudnik was killed in 1996. He was attempting to stop a driver in a stolen car.

Date: 8-28-06 Time: 1845hrs Location: I-87 Northbound just south of Exit 31-Elizabethtown Description Of Incident: Greyhound bus from NYC to Montreal overturned. Writer: Truck4 (AP) WESTPORT, N.Y. A Greyhound bus traveling from New York City to Montreal crashed through a guard rail and landed upside down in an embankment, reportedly killing five people and trapping others inside the wreckage, police said. State police reported five unconfirmed deaths, but they had not been confirmed by a medical examiner late Monday, said Trooper Ryan Bentley of the Westport barracks. At least 20 passengers were lying on blankets and stretchers while receiving care from medical personnel. The back and top of the bus was crushed and one of its back wheels was turned inward. Former Mayor Daniel Stewart and his partner, Jon Recor, were among the first people at the crash site, The Plattsburgh Press Republican reported from the scene. Steward provided a blanket to cover some of deceased passengers. The bus, No. 4014, departed New York at 1 p.m. and made stops in Albany and Saratoga Springs before the crash, said Greyhound spokeswoman Anna Folmnsbee. There were 52 passengers and one driver onboard, she said. It was traveling northbound on Interstate 87 at about 6:45 p.m. when it overturned just before exit 31 near Elizabethtown. The injured were taken to hospitals in Elizabethtown, Plattsburgh and Glens Falls. CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh was in disaster mode and called City Police Department for help with crowd control. The highway remained closed late Monday between Exits 30 and 31 in both directions. Greyhound has set up an information hotline for friends and families of passengers at 800-972-4583. Westport is 110 miles north of Albany.

Mayor Nagin's response on Friday from NOLA.com: Asked during a Friday morning news conference to discuss the commotion he had caused, Nagin confessed that he could see how some might find it "a bit insensitive" that he called the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, which killed more than 3,100 people, "a hole in the ground." Beyond that, Nagin said he feels he made a valid point. "The comparison is relevant," he said. "It's difficult to recover from a disaster, whether it's a couple of blocks in New York or whether it's 80 percent of the city of New Orleans." While Nagin admitted that, in the past, he has "kind of crossed the line" with his comments, he attributed it to his blunt style. "I'm a very direct person," he said. "You guys know that. If you ask me a question, I'm going to answer it as best I appreciate it. Now, you may not like some of the words I use, but for the most part nobody has disputed the context of what I've been trying to say." Asked if the World Trade Center reference crossed one of those lines, Nagin said, "I don't know, I haven't seen the piece. I haven't even seen the trailer. "I think '60 Minutes' is being very smart about their business. They followed me around for three days. They've taken one quote and they're using it as a promo quote and it has created a little bit of controversy. So, I'm sure there will be a big audience watching it on Sunday." With the eyes of the nation focused on New Orleans as the one-year anniversary of Katrina approaches, Nagin dismissed fears that his appearance on the popular news program might spark a national backlash against the city as it slogs along on its slow road to recovery. "I haven't seen that," he said. "The last national poll says it all -- 70 percent of Americans think that New Orleans still needs help. So, if my comments were hurting us, I think you would have seen it in that poll."
