  5. The Poughkeepsie Urinal did this a few months ago.... it's expensive as hell -- $17 a month for web access and Fri-Sat-Sun delivery of a real paper... I'm planning on killing the whole thing -- waste of time and money.
  6. Wake is on Sunday at Hawthorne Funeral Home from 16:00-21:00 http://obit.hawthornefuneralhome.com/obit_display.cgi?id=1054169
  7. Very sad day... My most sincere condolences to Ed, Lauren, their children, the Elmsford Fire Department, and the Village of Elmsford Water Department.
  8. or get a HAM operators license....
  9. I would say that all of the locks on the Tahoe are battery actuated - even by key. Since there is nothing left of the electrical system, this was the only safe way to get to all of the EMS supplies. Shattering the glass would have sprayed glass over all of the smoke/water contaminated supplies and equipment I guess. Of course this is a hypothetical guess.
  10. Ahhh yes.... Good old Agnes.... That truck made some serious impressions at the 68 East Hartsdale Ave fire in the early 90's when it operated its ladder pipe while supplying a Yonkers engine and New Rochelle ladder... Good times!!
  11. Took these from the road with my iPhone....
  12. And to think my employer (Laerdal) makes all of those CPR training manikins!!!! Great job!!
  13. What was the fate of my favorite truck??? I remember going to Brookfield and grabbing that Aerodynic from an old FDNY engine and mounting it to the bumper. It added a lot more visibility. Mind you, the Twin Sonic on the roof was replaced with a Whalen full-size strobe bar back in the day.
  14. Welcome back Bill!! Great pics. Where was this MVA??
  15. It is with deep regret that The Elmsford Fire Department announces the passing of Raymond Rush, Ex-Chief of the Department, Life Member of the Live Oak Engine Company and former Westchester County Fire Coordinator. 16. We had this happen on our 1994 Pierce TL... There was a visual alert -- a flashing red light on the cab's ceiling. The day after this happened, I added a small piezzo speaker (alarm) to the light ($1.50 at Radio Shack). The good thing was that if a compartment door was open, you heard the alarm. The bad thing was that when a door was opened (and left open) you also heard the alarm. IMHO there should be an alarm for compartment doors being open that activates when the truck is put in gear, and a seperate alarm for a door open. As for the damage to the building..... that's an aweful lot of damage. The door is likely aluminum and should have just continued to fold rather than the bricks breaking apart.
  17. Here's something I learned in Aruba -- cold A/C in the room and 90 degrees with 90% humidity outside. Take a Ziplock bag and put the camera in it. Remove as much air from the bag as possible. 15 minutes before you plan to use the camera, put the zipped bag into the temp/humidity environment you're going to shoot in Take the camera out of the bag. That's it. No fog. Mind you, a vacuum bag machine (like a FoodSaver) works the best for this. I laughed when someone told be about it after 4 days of major fogging on my Nikon D5000. Sure enough -- it didn't fog after the bag trick!!!! Good luck. Jeff.
  18. To qualify for the position of volunteer firefighter, an individual must: Meet residence requirements, if they exist. Meet the active membership requirements or bylaws of the entity or organization. Successfully complete required probation or training needs. Google got me here: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/fire/firehowto.html ALSO..... 3. Any person elected to membership as a volunteer member of a fire company shall be a resident of the fire district or of territory outside the fire district which is afforded fire protection by the fire department of the fire district, or any fire company thereof, pursuant to a contract for fire protection, except as otherwise provided in subdivision six. 4. The membership of a volunteer member of a fire company shall terminate when he ceases to be a resident of the fire district or of any territory outside the fire district which is afforded fire protection by the fire department of the fire district, or any fire company thereof, pursuant to a contract for fire protection, except as otherwise provided in subdivision five. 20. I love the dude trying to open the front door.... twice. The backwards helmet and all.... Me thinks nobody noticed the windows next to the door. Not to mention the dude standing on the I-Beam leaning into the window that the PPV fan is blowing towards. Wow.
  21. Vinegar??? Bad choice - it will leave a residue and eventually cause corrosion. Whenever dealing with electronics, ALWAYS use isopropyl rubbing alcohol (90% is perfect). You can actually soak the laptop in it (if you really had to) and after letting it dry for a few days, it'll work fine. Seriously, you can soak the keyboard in it for 15 minutes (take the kbd out of the computer first). A majority of the smoke smell is going to be located within the heat sync and cooling fins on the laptop. This is where the dist accumulates - dust will absorb the smoke. Get a can of Dust-Off and blow out every orifice of the laptop. I suggest doing this outside. Also, do NOT use a compressor - the pressure is way too high and will likely cause damage. I'm not making this up -- I'm a Dell Certified Tech and this is based on their recommendations. Done it all before with 100% success.
