I recall from a bunch of years ago that OSHA doesn't want sirens on the roof any longer, so they put them on the 'pushbar'.... Something to do with tinnitus and other wonderful hearing problems.

My parents live in Vista, CA (North SD County) My Sister lives in Vista. My Aunt and cousin live in La Mesa (central SD county I think) My other cousin lives in Chula Vista. The Chula Vista cousin was evacuated - unknown outcome of the home Everyone else was packed and very ready to go but were never given the order to leave. The soot/ash is about 2-3" deep in Vista though. Good luck to all!!!

Not for nothing, but...... A vast majority of LIFE SAVING medical procedures that are around today are due to testing on dogs, monkeys, rats, and pigs... Heck - the Blue Baby Syndrome was cured based on experimentation on dogs!! Here's what I don't get -- everyone wants to be saved using the most up to date medical procedures but nobody is willing to accept that the creation of these procedures needs to be tested and tested and tested over and over again until it's 100% flawless. Nobody is willing to be a test subject for these new procedures, but everybody wants it to save or recover their own lives. Did you know that most of the nerve regeneration procedures that are around today are the result of animal testing??? Riiiiight. Now mind you... while I was an active FF in Elmsford, we had an animal testing facility in town and it was all the outrage to find out that it was there. "Not in my back yard" and I was all for getting rid of them. I was young and uninformed back then. We can't expect to have all of these incredible life saving advances in medicine without being able to test them. I work for a medical simumation company now and the virtual reality systems are truly amazing, but you can only simulate what is known. You can't tell that things will go bad if a few steps are combined without real world testing. All I am saying is that you need to look past the nose on your face to see the bigger picture. The world is a lot larger and rounder than Christopher Columbus initially thought - now look at where we are today???

I have a question about it though... what's the purpose for the wide-angle mirror hanging over the nose of the truck in front of the passenger?? I could understand it on the rear of the truck to see that all is closed but the front???

WOW!!! Those pictures bring back some memories!!!! Thinking back, I now recall everything from that fire as if it was yesterday. One bit of interest - Elmsford Quint 2 was used that day to not onlyh supply its ladder pipe and several handlines, but it also supplied the City Of Yonkers FD's engine and one other piece of apparatus (so I can't remember it all). My hose team was actually the first onto the fire floor (I was the nozzleman). Once we made entry to the apartment that the fire started in/over, we got driven out by 3 aerial streams - twice!!! It was one really LONG day to say the least.

Here's the deal... I'm a Dell Certified Tech and I see this ALL the time at work.... If the laptop is out of warranty, then you can buy a replacement keyboard on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Dell-630m-640m-6400-9400-M140-E1505-Keyboard-in-US_W0QQitemZ220139765182QQihZ012QQcategoryZ51155QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZVie Item). To replace it will take about 15 minutes -- it's literally 4 screws!!! Cakewalk!!! Trust me. Cleaning the keys is not going to work -- you would need to take each key off to clean the surface and spring clips (not for the faint at heart) and then take the keyboard itself out of the laptop and seperate the layers to reveal the contact skin. Then clean that. By the time you're done, you'd have spent a good 3 hours and have a keyboard that only half works. Good luck!!

Wouldn't the Memorial Day Parade also be inappropriate then?? Doesn't that parade often have marchers from past and present wars?? The Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Marines??? What about the National Guard?? That's a political statement. Should the fire apparatus be in those parades?? Seriously - I do not think that we should be in Iraq or Afghanastan, BUT... I fully support our troops... They are fighting for our freedom on a daily basis.

aside from the chocks... what happened to the parking brake??? was it not applied or was there a failure of an air pressure line that would let it release as well as the PTO?? Some apparatus that had/have air actuated PTOs - that could be a potential explanation.

Rest in Peace, Fred. I've known Fred and his family for over 20 years and can say that he was a good person.... He will be missed by me, the Elmsford Fire Dept, his family, and anyone that knew him. My sincerest condolences to Debbie, Julie, and Gail. Fred can now play golf with Mike!! Jeff.

Elmsford Quad 2 was a 1957 Oren that was refurbished twice - once to the International cab and then a second time to repair some serious rust/rot and a complete white over lime paint job. When the current Ladder 55 was purchased, the current Tower Ladder 21 was renamed from Quint 2 and Quint 2 was assigned to the new ladder. Unfortunately, the names Quint 2 and Quad 2 were retired due to the standardized apparatus naming conventions making Quint 2 the now Ladder 55. When Quint 2 (L55) was purchased, the Workhorse (the Quad) was temporarily retired to the Highway Dept's parking lot until the County asked the area department's if they could 'loan' a spare pumper to the training center as their engine had problems. It was Quad 2 to the rescue - with both a pump and full compliment of ladders. The Workhorse spent about 10 months there assisting in both pumping and ladder training for countless classes. For its entire life, the Quad was a truck wuth a manual transmission. There aren't many of those around anymore. That was about when I moved from Elmsford and lost track of the 1957 Quad that was named "The Workhorse".

I just flew in/out of Stewart (SWF) last week and the departure on AirTran (6AM flight) was a breeze. I was even upgraded to Business Class. The return was a bit hectic though -- at 22:30, my AirTran flight, a JetBlue flight, and a US Air flight arrived all at the same time. They only had one baggage crew working and it took an hour just to get my bags. Parking is a bit hokie too... They have the overflow lots now, but a single 10 passenger van (just one) making the rounds between the terminal and the two overflow lots just isn't enough. They need to get a few 30 passenger bus-type vehicles - at least 2 at a time. Don't get me wrong - my drive to SWF from home in Wappingers Falls is a mere 25 minutes on a busy day. The convenience factor is certainly there!! Just think, in addition to JetBlue, AirTran, Delta, AA, and USAir, a new player will be joining them in a few months: CONTINENTAL!! I think once the PA takes over the operations, a lot of the issues will get better. On the flip side, a lot will also get worse. The ridership out of Stewart has increased 312% since January (according the the Poughkeepsie Journal) as compared to previous years and is only going to grow further. Once they start putting in more direct flights to other cities (they currently go to Atlanta, Philthadelphia, and I think Detroit) you'll see a larger increase. They should also start flying to Toronto at some point - they are an "international" airport you know. And who knows - one day, the Space Shuttle may land there!! SWF is the 4th landing option preceded by Houston, Cape Canaveral, and White Sands, NM. Happy travels!!

Looking on the condition of the front of the house (the white side that is), the windows are still intact, no smoke stains, and no melted siding, it does appear safe -- from this view only. It does look like a deck fire, BUT if you look at the 2nd roof (rear of the house), there was significant extension into the structure which appears to be moving towards the front of the structure via the attic. You can see through the side of the house into the fully involved attic which appears to be fairly involved. Since the flames are just blowing out of the gable vent, I would use EXTREME caution moving any further on that roof. An inspection hole would be the best choice with a trench somewhere to their left. It does look like the power has been cut, which is a good thing.

I took a drive around town late this afternoon (after the monsoon stopped) and snapped some pictures of two extremely swollen creeks - actually they're the same creek but in different locations Anyway... by looking at the pictures, what bad things do you think could happen and what 'planning' would you do?? Bear in mind that the big red pipe is a massive sewage pipe (if my source is correct that is) and both brown-water-rapids flow under roadways. I am not critiquing any department, person, whatever. I thought I would post the images for their content alone - to my knowledge, nobody has done anything wrong, right, or left.

I guess my 'source' was wrong then. Never trust a cop I guess....

I tend to assume (dangerous word here) that it was initially upright but rolled due to unstable ground post-washout.

Take a closer look at pictures 1 and 4 (first post).... Notice the small building that is completely submerged and the building that is being POUNDED by the tide (when I drove past the buildings, they were still occupied).

Both areas are considered water falls though much calmer under normal circumstances... Yes, it's sewage, but I honestly have no clue where it stops - not sure I want to know either... And yes, it's the same creek as last month - good thing the water wasn't nearly as bad as it is now.

It's been a long while since I went to ScanCT to listen to 60-Contol, but when I went there today, they're no longer streaming it. Does anyone know where I can find a site that simulcasts 60-control on the Internet??
