JetPhoto, you hit the nail on the head. Even though it's a little thing, it's a way to let people know we appreciate them taking the time to post and add knowledge, information, or photos to our community, making it better for everyone.

I notice fewer & fewer people using the "Like This" button, now of course everyone is not going to "Like" everything but consider the contribution the person made to the topic.
As an example if a person creates an "Incident Alert" and they really take the time to put some details in the story please consider giving them some credit. I have seen some people who no longer post them because it appears no one cares.
If people post some photos of an incident and you like them let them know by hitting that "Like" button.
Good conversation started or comments you agree with in a topic give them some credit hit the button.
Just my opinion

There isn't "ENOUGH help" in any Westchester County department anymore. I don't care if it's paid or volunteer; the first due doesn't meet NFPA1710 or 1720 anywhere but perhaps Yonkers and even Yonkers has been cut back.
At this fire and at most other fires there is no staging of additional resources; everyone is working and then they put the FAST to work so there's NOBODY left if something untoward happens. There should be some resources available at the scene to go to work when it gets ahead of you. We don't do that and it's going to bite us in the rear one of these days. Luck only lasts for so long.
As for 1&1 on additional alarms, when it's all you can get... It's what it is my friend.
Contrary to this experience, consider the recent fire in Staten Island that went to a 6th Alarm. I would guess that's close to 250 FDNY members. How many did Bronxville have on their 4th? Or even on the initial response.
The system is broken but nobody, and I mean nobody, will say that the emperor has no clothes!

In my recent past I was injuried in a working fire brought to the hospital via an ambulance workmen comp denied paying all the bills which to this day I'm still fighting over and being brought to collections over. I will loose my s*** if workmencomp sees these types of videos and pays a claim after watching this type of foolmanship. Any career guy on here will tell you what a pain in the ass comp claims are. How do manufactures even warranty a paint job after these wet downs. Our new rigs come with specific instructions on how to clean and care for the new paint job. Tower ladder streams weren't covered I assure you.

Pete, I hate to sound like an extremist, but many (such as yourself) have invested time and personal capital to try and prevent this type of continued behavior and hostility.
To try and sabotage a negotiation that has taken more than 5 years for the Union to reach is nothing short of a "nuclear" sized mistake on the part of these 5 "chiefs".
I am not surprised that a couple of these people would continue to fan the flames in Stamford, but having all 5 take part appears to be a collective effort by all remaining volunteers.
Disagreements over each departments operations, tactics, hose lays, policies, vehicle colors, etc. are understandable within the fire service....attempting to affect the livelihood of the families of 280 union members is inexcusable and something that will not fade with time.
If the volunteer Chiefs wanted to unite Stamford career firefighters behind one common enemy for many, many years to come, they will have finally succeeded at something.

I agree wholeheartedly. It is the culture within many VFDs that has to change and adapt to the modern realities. What worked years ago doesn't in most cases anymore. An all career dept is not the one size fits all solution either since many towns and cities simply can't afford the expense. That said there are a number of departments that have accepted the facts and made changes. Now to be fair some have done so and made dramatic improvements while other have only begun to move forward, but the point is moving forward they are. Sadly for every one that is moving forward there are 10 that are stagnant or worse still, moving backwards.
Ultimately the most practical solution is a combination system where staffing is distributed effectively to provide the most coverage in a timely manner with a reasonable cost...on paper that is. We all know it isn't that simple. To the outsider looking in at the fire service, it must seem that we, as a group, are either completely insane or downright stupid or both. That there are so many things which get in the way of providing a decent level of service to those we are all here to protect is a travesty of monumental proportions..and quite frankly it defies reason.
Until ALL firefighters decide to live up to OUR core values and put those we serve first there is little hope for progress. The simple truth is that we have all let something other than those we serve become our primary concern. It doesn't matter if it's a fiefdom, a contract, a grudge or ambition, everything that stands in the way of us serving our communities in THEIR best interest is the problem. And it is OUR problem
You know it isn't always the other guy, in fact it almost never is. We might all do well to remember that "I'm a part of the problem" and work on fixing ourselves before we go lambasting "the other guy". That admission would do more to change the fire service for the better that any debate, battle or scheme in our collective history. We are all a product of the culture we are a part of, but we are also the only ones who, right now today, can begin to change that culture.
As was told to me and as I pass along to every new FF that passes through the door..."NEVER forget that you are not here for you, you are here for those we SERVE"!! Somewhere along the line it seems many have forgotten that fact.

Thank you "LTNRFD" for reporting this story.
The day of this incident there were TWO separate major fires within hours of each other. Each in large 3 1/2 story frames and involving the close exposures on an extremely windy day.
The first major fire was on Eaton St which went to a General Alarm (above a Fifth Alarm). The second major fire only a few hours later was on Laurel Hill Ave and went to a Fourth Alarm. I have been a buff chasing the Providence Fire Dept for about 40 years and I never remember a day like that. Except for maybe in the 1980s when the Fourth of July nights used to go crazy catching several building fires. But nothing like these two major jobs within hours of each other. In addition, I was told by a member of that department with 21 years on the job, he never remembers a day like that either.
The City of Providence, R.I. with a population of about 170,000 people operates 14 Engines, 8 Ladders, 1 Heavy Rescue, along with 7 Ambulances. They are one of the busiest departments in New England.
Many mutual aid companies were called into Providence from the surrounding cities and towns. They have had a very good mutual aid system in place for many years in that area.
I met Fire Captain Fontaine of Ladder Co 1 about three months ago. He is a Great guy and into the job. The day of this event, the union president reported that he is in critical condition in the ICU at Rhode Island Hospital.

The outside of your helmet may not have skin contact, but if you look in the bowl, there is cloth padding that will absorb toxins (and sweat and skin oils and whatnot). Whenever you wash your gear, these pieces should be removed and laundered as well. Those pieces have contact with your hood or your skin. A quick rinse of the outside of your helmet will clean it up some and you may actually be able to tell if that burnt food smell is coming from the locked apartment or your own head.
