is htat the stuff that makes opaque whitish lines in the road? And, shouldn't those trucks be placarded so we know what to do if they flip and leak? Just wondering. JVC

Congratulations to a heck of a guy and a great firefighter on his retirement. I second dmccabe...I also worked with JimBog as we called him and he was fun to have around, always in a good mood and really knowledgeable about the business. Heres to a long and healthy retirement...use that pension fund for a LONG LONG time! Joe C.

Interesting number...The City of Norwalk uses CFS #s (Call for Service numbers). In other words, our runs get bundled with PD and EMS calls. The city did close to 70,000 calls for service and I am still waiting for our share of that so I could post run stats on our website. It should be in the area of 10% of the calls for service. Any other departments use CFS #'s? They are a pain because you can't gauge how you are doing during the year.

The new Communications Van was delivered today. I will post vehicle specs when I receive them. For now, enjoy the pic. The rig will be stored @ Westport FD HQ next to the new Hazmat 1.

In Norwalk, we are considered on duty en route to work and en route back home or to the next destination. We have had members get in car accidents to and from work and they are covered under comp. For this reason, it is important for the CO to document the time a member left the firehouse from his/her shift.

I just wanted to add that I have worked many, many accidents and incidents with these guys on I-95 over the years and they are all very helpful and cooperative with FD and PD. They can't do enough to help! Glad to see they are getting new rides. Happy New Year! JVC

The truck was purchased with homeland security grant money. Fairfield County Hazmat received the bulk of the funds and member towns of the team also put in. The resource will be available for more than just hazmats. I am not really sure how they are going to letter it up, but it will be a team resource and a regional resource. It will be stored in Westport but available anywhere it is requested for whatever reason. It will be Westport's responsibility to get it where it needs to go. If needed, I am sure Trumbull RDC (FCHM pageout center) could put out a call to techs trained on it to get it where it needs to go. Don't get hung up on "Fairfield County", it is a resource that can be used anywhere as far as I know. Member Towns of Fairfield County Hazmat: Greenwich, Norwalk, New Canaan, Darien, Westport, Wilton, Trumbull, Easton, Weston, Bridgeport, Fairfield. More info available on www.fairfieldcountyhazmat.org JVC

It seems that the more bored a fireman gets, the more dangerous the environment becomes. LOL Enjoy the storm. I personally like the storms better when I can enjoy them from the front of my fireplace rather than the front seat of Engine 3. Keep it in the barn tonight folks...unless its WORK. JVC

X-BOX, X-BOX, X-BOX... Maybe some PS2 as well. Back in my vollie days, we used to get a boatload of food and have marathon X-Box Madden tournaments. Those were the days...Belltown used to put on a heck of a spread for the standby crews, and I have no reason to think that they do it any differently today... Joe C.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I guess i'd better cherish my last year in my thirties. Now that I am on the bad side of 30, at least I have 10 years completed in Norwalk and I am vested in the pension...something to be said for old age... Thanks again! All I can say is this is a great network of people. Joe C.

Just thought I'd share this picture with the group. Sorry about the poor quality. Each year the guys at Nichols outdo themselves with Christmas decorations at their Firehouse on Shelton Road in Trumbull. It always looks classy and festive.

As far as the Modus Operandi of E6, I think it was designed the way it was to serve in any capacity it needs to in case SFRD is put in another Stamford Volunteer station. Am I wrong PJ? I like the dots though, I was teaching in West Haven a month ago and they had members installing the dots on their Pierce Aerial. It looked relatively easy to do, but mind-numbing at the same time. I will say this though...Norwalk's T-1 is a pumper with a ladder on it, and honestly, the truck does neither function well, it is junk and most of us can't wait til it is replaced (with a REAL ladder truck). For a while, our AC of Operations had us using T-3 (Reserve), which is a 1985 Sutphen 100' Aerial Tower in place of T-1, but I think T-3 is going out soon to get enclosed and painted RED, so we have the "quint" back. I included photos of each.

Just a quick FYI, the new Engine 1 in Norwalk went into service at Broad River yesterday. Ironically, E1 was extremely busy today with several trips to the Merritt Pkwy, one being a pinjob. JVC

I received a news text message today that a member of The Glenbrook FD in Stamford was killed in Iraq. JC

There are many outcomes that could have resulted from this. I think the best one was chosen. I would feel this way no matter what creed, race, color the perps were. Simple...don't commit crimes against people and you will not put yourself in the position of being shot and killed. NICE!

The City of Norwalk is currently putting together a job discription and announcement for the position of Public Safety Communications Supervisor. We were lucky enough to have had Joe Higgins (Former FDNY Communications Director) for a while, but apparently our powers that be did not like his vision for the future, which by all accounts was a good one. Thanks for all you did Joe! We (FD) appreciated your efforts! To read more about the new job, click the following link: Norwalk seeks director for Public Safety Dispatch Center JVC

Norwalk: F/Y 2008: Ordering Rescue 2 (Most likely a Spartan/Marion) Heavy Rescue F/Y 2009: Ordering Truck 1 (Most likely a 100' stick unsure of builder) By the way, new Engine 1 was hit in it's first few days of service while parked at a separate MVA. Reports are damage is noticeable but minimal. JVC
