  1. that was cool ....what was it, some kind of live burn or somthing???
  2. I found this while putting off doing my math homework at school..... early 1900s videos They are videos from the early 1900s...theres a few from NYC, cleveland, and NJ. Pretty nifty to see the horses flying by! Check out the one in montreal, the horses are pulling fire sleds! They are filmed by good old Tom Edison the site also has alot of other history on firefighting on it.
  3. The way that is being shown; wont that break the glass on the door? Another thing i am pondering is if the door is a "heavy project" door, isn't the door handle probibly going to fail before the mag does?...that is ofcorse if the glass lasts that long. (i don't really know anything about these doors so im sure im overlooking somthing)...One thing i do know and can attest to is that mags do get messed up when they are exposed to shock. I remember doing that is science.
  4. EXACTLY........LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT
  5. RADIO SHACK DISCONE ANTENNA. i have one and it is sooo good. a few times with good cloud bounce, ive gotten departments in NJ, PA, and up state NY along with always getting the bronx, city wide, Mann. and most alot in CT....they are only like 40 bucks too...also like i say to everyone, try ebay!
  6. great, now we get to hear "wires down" and "respond for a flood condition"!!!!!!
  7. Not saying it would help that much but have you tryed a JR Corps.?....i am a JR in the KBHVAC and it sees as though we have been getting pretty dedicated JRs to fill as a crew. They also go on the take emt later and end up being good emts. We have one who is in college who is now going for medic (X JR). We also have a shift system up here. That works good because we have a few people who can leave their jobs durring the day to respond. In the past few months, ive even found it tough to make a bus because everyone on the crew shows up + 1 or 2 people.
  8. Bedford hills has got a class D on both of our engines, the tuck, and i think the rescue...maybe its on the MA, I can't totaly remember. I can only remember 1 carfire where we needed it. Has anyone ever had to use it on anything other then a car fire? Im sure IBM has some things that would make the class D look like gold compaired to water
  9. but like i said....if mr mail man gets in the way of the FD, he better be wearing his seat belt because hes gonna get run the heck over! ...and the patriot act is not ignoring the constitution but that if for a different topic
  10. Kind of sounds like that old saying if a fire truck, a cop car, a bus and, a mail van pull up to an X, who has the right of way.....I always like to joke that the mail van gets the right of way but the fire truck will run the mail van over.......anyways...my guess is you'd listen to the flag guy...Drivers ed always told us to listen to the authority that is most aware of the situation
  11. Isn't that hartsdale's "alarm box repair truck" or somthing???...I know its hartsdale's but im not to sure what exactly it does.
  12. I personally would call them outriggers. On a midmounted tower ladder, the "things" that come down from the middle of the truck are called stabilizers because they stabilize the truck from tipping one way or the other. The jacks are the ones in which the truck is "jacked up" off the ground.
  13. lololol...they make it look reaaaaaaaaaaaaal good in that tour of the facility
  14. Like i said, it was 1 in the morning on the sawmill with confermation that the engine was blocking the whole 2 lanes but yes, durring the day with cars and such, it should be made very clear if the road is shut down. Another thing that is tricky are those FD cuts in the divider to let you make a U turn.
  15. Parkways could be the worst with nothing but a curb, no place to pull off. That creates problems with stoping when you actualy get to the scene. I can remember a few times having trouble getting cars to slow down and move to the other lane becasue we had to take up a whole lane even though the crash was off the road. There also become problems with over crouding the parkway with trucks. In Bedford Hills, we send Rescue 10 and MA 9 on the initial responce. For car fires its usualy engine 198 and the tanker (althoguh out of my 2 years here, i can only remember 1 or 2). Normaly PD is good about helping us. I remember one night at like 1 in th emorning, we had a jeep on fire and we pulled the engine right across both lanes (there was no trafic at the hour anyways). It was good protection and it let tanker 5 drive the wrong way down the parkway.
  16. You'd think you would get SI good because staten island is on the same frequency as da bronx...i have the same problem though. Also does anyone have an explination why i can get yonkers and MV when i live in the "north county" (bedford hills) but i cant get white plains (and i am like 20 mins away)???? thats what i really cant figure out.
  17. I was just at an engineering expo over the weekend and I started talking to the engineer who is redesigning the decking on the bridge. He was saying that the main problem now is the salt water and also salt during the winter that gets washed off and over the bridge. What happens now is that all of the water and such goes under the curbs and barriers, draining it all on the decking supports. The new design calls for the water to run off the absolute end of the deck. It will run under the barriers but not under the deck. The water will then just run off the end of the deck.... |: barrier _:deck C:curb =:supports W:water NOW __|C__________--_________C|___ ==w==================w=== the water runs on the deck and under that c but then runs on the beams holding the deck up AFTER NEW DECKING ____|____________|_____________|____ w ============================ w there will be openings at the bottom of the barriers to allow water to pass under them while still flowing on the deck....then the water will run right off the end of the deck without running on the beams. it really is an easy solution to a poor design. only prob is it calls for all new decking.
  18. YESSSSSS NOW THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. i hope they do use some for a good memorial but the rest, sure, make it into the USS NY...its kind of like a floating memorial. i think its a great idea.
  20. to be honest, that is what i was thinking but i wasnt sure. so i guess an undercast or fog wouldnt be very good right? with undercast, its just like a clear day out and fog, wouldnt that deflect the waves away from the ground? and to efdny....it would be kind of hard to move everything. i have a discone antenna on my roof along with a weather station connected to it . before i got the antenna though, i used to get interference from my computer, pager/charger, and even my cellphone so when i did move it, it would work better.
  21. as it is a very nice day today, i figured id clean my room  and see what happening with the FDNY on my scanner. I turned that bank on and i am just barley getting the Bronx which normally i get the best, forget about the rest of the city . now i see that this is a trend. every nice clear day, i seem to not get very good reception and on snowy, rainy, or cloudy days, i seem to get everything. so the question i pose is does it make a difference what is going on out the window and if it does, why?
  22. armonk, somers and mohegan self dispatch up here in the north westchester. edit above....armonk is dispatched by armonk pd i think
  23. you got it porsh...25% italian and 100% American!!!! im in too, i have one or 2 nice ones of my yellow knome dome
  24. believe it or not, i have the same problem. go figure.. .logicly, that shouldnt happen and to ECLEMENTE no, i have never gotten that, although i used to get brooklyn and queens but it seems that i am not picking them up any more
  25. i am lucky enough to have a discone on my roof so i scan bedford pd, westchester (60 control and such), yonkers, new ro, mt vernon, FDNY bronx and city wide on one (yes i get that from bedfrod hills) and if a good job is anounced on city wide, i hit bank 8 and i scan the rest of the city. then when there is nothing going on, i hit dutchess and putnam and once in a while i will turn on 5 which is my CT bank (norwalk, fairfield, new canain, ridge field, blablabla)
