  1. My daughter has also spent a good amount of time at the Childrens Hospital in Westchester. The room was great before with the engine , now it looks like a station. Great job guys , I am sure the kids will love it. It serves as a distraction and if the kids can forget why they are there for just a minute it is all worth it. Just being able to see the very sick children have a good time and see those lights come on its great.

  3. Just remember these things that you have stated are all valid points. I have been in the fire service for 20 years. And in the beginning I didn't want to miss anything. But as I got older I went to fewer calls , not as many drills , not as many meetings. Thats no ones fault, thats life. Remember that it is volunteer and you shouldn't feel or be made to feel you need to be at everything. Yes training, drilling are important , being informed about what is going on in your department is important also , but not at the cost of your family life. I had seen someone write in a previous post, '' the fire service will survive when your gone''. Departments always seem to get the job done . IF YOU NEED A BREAK, TAKE A BREAK. You don't have to go to every call.

  5. Ems without a doubt..... LOL
  6. SNAP N WEAR QUILTED COAT OR CARHARTT DENIM CHORE COAT.
  7. I think that some Departments need to remember that not all areas have hydrants and a secure water source when they deploy their hose lines. Some just operate off their tank water how ever much it may be. They are depending on the second engine to secure the water source, shuttles tankers etc... That takes some time. The wrong deployment of a smooth bore and getting too committed in the building and spraying at smoke can use up your water pretty quickly. Then what do you do ? Different nozzles work better for different departments for different reasons. I also agree you need to be versatile. Its not wrong just different. Old school officers say that they would rather hit a fire with everything they have all at once ( 2 inch hand line smooth bore nozzle) than to sit inside with an automatic nozzle under gunned. Just some more things to think about.
  8. Some police agencies shut they're rear strobes off on their vehicles at scenes because they blind traffic and the officer can't be seen in the street. So as far as too many lights I agree. Depending on the pattern, and the light ,it can cause some people to go into fits.(see seizures) for you non - technical people.
  9. Grest job. Keep up the good work. The site generates a wealth of information. I am on every day. Seth,my wife blames it all on you she can't get the computer. Again great job!!!!!!!!!! STAY LOW AND KEEP MOVIN.....
  10. In August 2006 Arlington Professional Firefighters Dutchess County N.Y.went to a 24/72 instead of 3 10 hr days, 3 off, 3 14 hr nights , 3/off. Most of us like it alot better for the reasons stated in the LA COUNTY ARTICLE.
  11. In 1994 F.D.N.Y. changed there Firefighting protective uniform from traditional full length coat and 3/4 boots to full bunker gear. A study was done by Bureau of Health Services Brooklyn N.Y. , Pulmonary Division at Montefiore medical center Bronx N.Y. , and the Department of Medicine Staten Island University Hospital Staten Island N.Y. They found that lower extremity burns decreased by 85% in 2 years. Upper extremity burns and head burns decreased by 65% and 40% respectivly. Heat exaustion and inhalation injuries and cardiac events also decreased. Do I like restrictive gear? No. But I think we are better off with full protection if we get our selves into a bad situation and we have as much going for us as possible.
  12. My sister inlaw flew in last Monday on SOUTHWEST airline into Albany International from Jacksonville FLA. She said the rates are reasonable. Not sure how they are from the N.Y.C. area airports or if they fly into them.

  14. I don't think it is the same spec gear. The gear EMS has only offers flash protection not entry gear. I think don't quote me.
