Why is it City A's responsability to provide safety to Village B? More importantly why should the taxpayers in City A have to subsidize village B, particularly when the taxpayers in village B are unwilling or unable to pay for fire protection. Since it is a fact that firefighting is hazardous, when that member is exposed to products of combustion protecting village B, the taxpayers in city A get to pay the additional health insurance and pension costs, when the member becomes injured or ill, City A's taxpayers get to pay the overtime costs to cover when he is out on sick leave. About 20 years ago the pension system in Mass. determined that smoking was a problem and they ordered that from that point forward any new hired FF could not smoke on or off duty or risk his/her pension. This was designed to reduce the pension costs to the taxpayers who pay for professional firefighters. I dont know if this is still the rule in Mass. If someone knows, please post. But this regulation shows that a community can regulate what hazardous activities an employee can participate in while off-duty. Its called a condition of employment and the employeer does not have to subsidize other communities. I do not have a personal problem with career members volunteering, but that should be the employeers right to determine, and not be forced into by the lobbying efforts of other communities.

What a shock that the volunteer/combo section pushed for this. Noticed that the Metro chiefs section has not commented.

The problem is how do you prove it. i.e. the problem is due to 30 years of fireground exposures or 40 years of smoking

Its a smart move that reduces duplication and saves $$$$, thats why it wont happen in NYS. They were talking about it 5+ years ago, but you see that nothing has changed.

Which is worst depends on how much stock you have in Exxon/Mobile

Just because you have tags, does not mean you have a system. I have seen very few depts that have the ability to track members locations and time in the structure. The British have tags on their SCBA that when you remove it, engages the pass alarm and starts a clock on the BA Control board. This lawsuit will get tosed if his claim is based on them not know he was missing for 45 minutes, if it was almost 4 minutes and he still broke his ankle removing him what would the excuse be? What about 4 hours or 4 days...what did the time frame have to due with the injury?

So if a 96 year old is flipping pancakes at the fund raiser and its "his time" thats the same as any of the 343? Its great that he is active, but don't claim he is in the same class and deserves the same benefits and recognition NYS Law says 30 days after your 62nd Birthday for career FF's (with a minor loophole in the law that a few chiefs have been able to use). Now why would the state do that? Could it be thats the point when heart attacks in FF's spike way up, this putting both the FF and the public at risk? Could it be that once again the vol. lobby in Albany wants 2 standards? This is no different than the argument over at what age is too old to drive....no one wants to offend sr citizens (large voting block).

I never understood how NYS DEC allowed this. If you take a payloader and fill a dumptruck then drive it 1/4 mile to the harbor and dump it in they fine you for it, but if you melt it into a storm drain and the pipe ends 20 feet from the dump site thats ok......typical government stupidity

New Rochelle has never owned an E-One. And the only Seagrave Engine was not a low rider.

What do most 75 year old with heart trouble die from? Answer....a bad heart Does it make a big diference if they are directing traffic or sitting at home? If we have not figured out that the average life expectancy in the U.S. for white males (which make up almost all of the FF's in the age group) is 75.7 years? The bigger issue is it a LODD? Yes they were serving the community (and many for most of their lives) but if your heart gives out at the time it is expected to and you happen to have a turnout coat on at that moment it in my opinion a true LODD. While the dept is free to call it that to make the family happy, how can you go up to any FF monument and compare this to those members who valiantly ran in to the WTC or who got caught in a flashover while push hard to save a fire victim?

Define Government. The fire service has been trying to get this past for 30 years. Its a consensious standard that state governments have adopted, because the insurance industry, the fire service, safety experts, etc. have shown it saves lives, property and in the long run $$$$.

Those same members should never be exposed to burn injuries, so they will never become certified in firefighting. They should never be exposed to a FF in Cardiac Arrest, so they should never be certified in firepolice (I know of at least 2 firepolice cardiac's in NYS this year) They should never be exposed to blood, so don't let them in the firehouse kitchen, since someone could get cut. I guess they should never leave their homes, since they might be exposed to something they cant stomach.

When I traveled in England, I found it interesting that FF's were not EMT's...they were just "FF's" however during their academy they spent about 180 hours on medical training and used the Brady EMT text as the course book. In other words they completed EMT but were just considered firefighters. no extra patch, same thing as a FF/EMT here.

Firefighter Down........."medical assistance is on the way" Is unaceptable!!!! Over 80% of EMS in the US is provided by Fire Depts. & most FD's provide some level of EMS. Seattle has trained over 80% of its citizens to do CPR, is that "dangerous"? If a volunteer FF can't stomach going into a burning building and frezes up (or paces back and forth infront of the building) how does that look to the public? How dangerous is that? Seattle FD has trained over 771,000 civilians in CPR. I've trained many EMT's who had never been on a call before they became an EMT, they would not know if they have the stomach or not. 90% of our career FF's had never been on a medical call before they were hired, they all became EMT's and in 20+ years I've only seen 2 or 3 (out of 100's) who had some issues, they still managed to get the job done. Yes we need to work within our scope of knowledge and training, and this thread is asking if 1st responders should be trained? When you say mandatory training is unfeasible are you refering to medical training, fire training or rescue training? I suspect that many depts have set the bar so low that you are right, its not the state its the lobbying efforts of groups that claim this will "hurt" communities.

We just recieved a 2 door version, also set up to plow. NYS Bid in Red. Standard colors are any Ford Color plus NYS DOT Yellow (Taxi cab?). We then had our roof painted white.
-
Since we still (as a state) dont require adequate training of volunteers to respond to fires, doesn't that make some of them useless in a fire situation? While I strongly agree that all FF's should know what to do if a fellow FF drops at a fire or they respond to MVA's, I think to many volunteers do not have enough training to go on fire calls and that needs to be the priority. Also I have seen way to many ff's "cut up" a car with no knowledge of how this may affect the patient. In almost every case FF/EMT's do a better job of extrication, since they are not just cutting up the car.
-
The high bid now stands at $51 (1987 engine) and $30 (1990 engine). Thats like 4 T-shirts. The scrap metal alone is worth $10,000 - $15,000 each.

Could not remember the original name (we enjoyed going there though) and after the rebuild we went once, and never went back (so the new name never was of importance to me).
-
For lack of an exingusher the kitchen was lost. For lack of an ansel system the restaurant was lost. For lack of a sprinkler system the building was lost. When they rebuilt the building they added sprinklers, so they paid for it in the long run anyway.

The tide went out? I always thought that NRFD draft so much water that long island sound drop by 8 feet. And it took another 6 hours to refill it.
-
Between the Civil Defence Rescue and the 91' Rescue 4 there was at least 2 units designated as R-4. both Dodge vans. The C.D. unit was paid for by the feds and operated by NRFD. (Who is F.D.N.R. anyway?)
-
Only if you can convince R-4's crew to cover 30A1....good luck

Wow, I learn so much on EMTBravo. Someone should let Pierce know, I'm sure they would find this news informative. Seth (or any other staff) can we add a banner to this site: "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story"
