  1. It is rare to find sprinklers & detectors in most of the void spaces. This is true in new construction (think wood I Beams) as well as old think balloon frame or even regular joists. The big concern with new construction is that fire will cause structural failure faster. Also it may burn more area in light weight construction voids before breaking out and potentially overwellming the sprinklers. This fire was in the cockloft, which is rarely sprinklered.
  2. Thanks. I was not trying to start a fight. Too many people want to pretend that every fire dept is equal, when departments cover the entire range (and that goes way beyond the career, volunteer or combo status).
  3. , NYS has 2 different standards, 1 for volunteers and another for career. And if you use OFPC's training records CD and look up what some departments records are, you'd be shocked to see that the majority of members in VFD's in westchester do not meet the minimum standards required by NYS Law (this does not mean they dont have it, it means they can't document that they have it). WPFD provided their own FAST and you could see them standing by on News 12
  4. You missed my point on manpower, it was not how many, it was how consistant. can the send the same #'s at 1pm on a friday as they can on an evening or weekend?
  5. Spending money was never an issue. But I dont think someone who bought his condo with everyone couch change should be commenting on purchasing.
  6. Since the Yonkers Schools are funded directly from city government (unlike most of NYS with a seperate school district) what difference does it make if the mayor funds the school cops or the mayor funds the school who fund the school cops. The money comes from the same pot. Loss of these positions is going to cause lots of problems.
  7. Can they guarantee a response with a minimum of _____, including an officer and all having the level of training that the state requires WPFD to meet? Note: I'm not saying anything bad about NWPFD (or any other agency, as it is possible that they do meet the above) but until NYS has 1 standard, closest does not mean equal. Just speculating.
  8. Assembly Speaker Silver showed up with one of those giant checks $1,000,000 I do not think its likely to happen again (since the state has no $$$).
  9. NRFD sent E-25, L11 & 2306. E-22 was not sent.
  10. What info are you looking for? The ISO rating, automatic 9, getting a 4 with no hydrants, etc.?
  11. 40% is municipal water supply if you have one. since most of BHFD does not have a mws they automatically get a PPC #9 unless they prove they can move the water. The FD has plenty of control over it, if they want to. There are VFD's with no hydrants and ISO ratings of 4.
  12. The chiefs asked for additional financial data, so it was delayed. should be out shortly.
  13. Do you know something that we don't know? NRFD is getting a new heavy rescue. The 1991 R-4 will be converted to replace the current 1990 R-54 (collapse unit)
  14. Sounds like a job for.....(Trumpets Sounding)....Supppper Probie
  15. While that is very important component, it maybe better to provid it on another vehicle, maybe on a "rehab" unit. The last thing you need in your command post is a line of responders coming and going...and going...and
  16. How about the "understaffed fire department" or "underfunded fire department" would also reflect the current fire service. Lets hear it for truth in advertising. Do you call a ambulance a "rescue" because its staffed by firefighters? does that change what it is or what it does? Or is a Rescue a non-transport tool box?
  17. So, you have completed the investigation and know all the facts? How do you know that it was the drivers falt? While we are all concerned with the officers condition, lets not jump to conclusions.
  18. The rescue is already on order from the 2008 budget, along with an engine which we expect delevery around Jan 30. 2009 we have asked for a new engine. There is no ladder budgeted or even requested in 2008 or 2009
  19. Do you really think MV's administration would even consider that? Why would Yonkers consider it?
  20. While climbing up and down on a traditional top mount is more likely to cause knee/ankle injuries, I never felt like I needed a helmet, because the PUC side/top mount I thought was more likely to actually take a header. Also the view from the traditional is much better. He still needs to climb up & down on the traffic side. I worked on E-24 for a number of years (FF, MPO, LT) and we were 1st & 2nd due on I-95 so I know what your concern is, but I'm not sure this really does it. Not sure you can get around the poor pump volume.
  21. On a $50,000+ item like a brush rig thats a potential savings of $1,500 (that could pay for the hand tools needed) while its not alot, why pay extra for the same exact item.
  22. Good idea, it would save everyone $$$ and it cost the state nothing to do....just what politicians like. Any new law should allow GSA and any county contract (not just the county you are in). We use to be allowed to use the Monroe County (rochester) contract, because it was the best.
  23. We have also been told by our finance department that it is illegal in NYS to purchase off Federal GSA. Also as of last year it is illegal to purchase off of county contracts unless the contract has a clause in it that extends the contract to local governments within the county.
  24. NRPD has been accredited for at least 15 years, with its mostly blue cars.
