  1. The commission is a great place to start and they are willing and able to pay for studies and implimentation.
  2. Another reason for 2,000 gpm is ISO requires that you dispatch the minimum pump capacity to meet the NFF (needed fire flow) of upto 3500 gpm. Many larger commercial buildings have NFF of 3500 - 6000 gpm. With 1,500 gpm you need 3 engines, with 2,000 gpm you need only 2.
  3. No way. The reporter cant be wrong......Maybe they were at a different fire than you!
  4. Instead of having PD deal with this issue (which in most cases they do not care to waste resources on it) potentially the courts will handle it. How will a chief explain to the community if the vehicle is involved in an MVA and the other vehicle or its insurance carrier sues and wins? This is not just about rear blue, I have seen a number of rigs with front blue as well. In those cases, a vehicle accident while runing RLS will result in even higher liability for an agency. I have been in a room with a number of chiefs who were told that blue's were illigal and the response was "we dont care" & "we will do what want" Just because the people do not know, depts are still placing themselves above the law. The real issue is lets change the law. And with FASNY no longer against it (as you pointed out) this time it should pass. Very true. 2 in 2 out, physicals, training, facial hair, etc.......
  5. They lobbied for many years to maintain it for personnal vehicles. When the NYSP finally made its big push about 2 years ago, they back down on PD vehicles, because they were afraid that they would lose any rights to the lights in POV. Thanks Seth, Looks like they have changed there position from 2 yeas ago.
  6. NYS has a very powerful lobbying group that will fight this fight and make sure that blue lights no matter how effective at protecting firefighters and the public, shall never be allowed on emergency vehicles. FASNY claims to represent all volunteer firefighters, but in many lobbying efforts they take positions that hurt everyone. They do not want fire apparatus to have blue lights because they believe the vollunteers should have the exclusive use of blue lights for their POV's. The volunteers who actually protect their communities need to know how they are represented in Albany and what laws get pushed on everyone because thats what FASNY thinks is best for the volunteers.
  7. While the Taconic has more challenges than other roads. Am I wrong or are there regular reports of wrong way incidents almost weekly. I do not hear the same for other parkways or interstates in Westchester. If this is true, then why is this road the one having the majority of wrong way incidents? That was my reason for suggesting that signage MAY reduce the numbers. Clearly the real problem is convincing drivers not to drive when impaired.
  8. Do the Rockafeller Drug Laws Work? Making the laws tougher has never changed the way humans behave. It makes politicians and the public feel good that we have "done something". I am not saying dont go after this idiot, just we are all quick to say change the laws and all that appears to do is cost the public more in taxes. How about lowering the blood achohol level even more and if cought they forfet the car and a large % of income for the next 10 years. Then we dont pay for punishment and rich or poor you are punished.
  9. It was built in the 1920's (starting in 1923) While it is clearly this idiots responsability. It seams to me that the TSP has a much higher number of incidents than other roads, maybe that means that signage may be an issue.
  10. Hey bobo...smokey is down...its an MOS......expidite...lol
  11. http://www.fdnylodd.com/9-11-Never-Forget/...-Of-Heroes.html One of the best sites I've seen. I will never forget.
  12. It is not "operational", it will free flow air, you can breath it till it runs out in a couple of minutes (its like opening the purg valve and leaving it open). Then be prepared to replace or spend $1,000's to fix.
  13. Yes, I was in a class in PA in the early 1990's. You can float on your back (with knees up) in turnouts. DO NOT TRY TO SWIM!!!.... The air trapped in the knees & shoulders pluss the tank will keep you on the surface. Also recommended to take off your helmet and pull it toward your chest (trapping the air in it). Have others fish you out. This is a good call to have a couple of 12' hooks both to fish you out & to grab the boat. You will be so heavy that you may not be able to pull your self out, but inching up and allowing for drainage helps.
  14. Another thing that most have never considered (particularly when looking at the narrow piers/docks & smoke conditions) is having a FAST team set for water rescue seperate from fire rescue, to be able to go after a firefighter in the water.
  15. Nope...poor design, failure to notify the customer of a recall (they "forgot" the unit was a ladder) and failure to fix a know design flaw even after an identical rig (San Antonio <sp>) failed. Note: 1 member was perminatly disabled (and was paid a lot of money in an out of court deal), 2nd member was inches from being crushed. The operator raised the ladder to about 70 feet at 70 degrees and the main pin fell out. This unit was 9 years old and had a full ladder test a few months before this incident. The FDNY incident that I'm thinking of (have they had more than 1?) occured at low angle, with at least 1 ff on the tip & 3 or 4 civilians. fire cut off the path and the operator rotated the ladder to clear a path. The ladder twisted and down it went. I would not call it operator error because he had no other option, but the ladder was pushed beyond its design.
  16. It is being repeated now on WLIW ch 21 (132 on cablevision)
  17. Anyone know the year of this unit, it looks like the same model that collapsed on us.
  18. It will drop from a 2 to a 4. The lowest rating we would have had since 1927. and it will cost the property owners of NR at least $12m in increased insurance premiums.
  19. We have it on our new Pierce (E-25) Spartan does not do it, but as a comprimise the new Rescue will have the brake on the engine tunnel within reach of the driver & the officer.
  20. Body as of July 24, 2009 Curbside Street Side Body as of July 30, 2009 Top Street Side
  21. According to "M": Missles behind the headlights, a rotating licence plate, the ability to drop oil, stars or smoke and an ejection seat for the officer.
  22. Seth, bring you vaulting pole. This unit will blow right past E-25. We have all kinds of surprises, some have never been seen in the fire service (military & railroads have played with them)....And I'm not telling.
  23. Trick or Treat. Final inspection 10/23/09
