  1. heart, determination, community pride, love of what you do, dedication to your company/department, selflessness, corage, ability to think "outside the box", willingess to go the extra mile,
  2. Ditto that he was a great guy with quite a sense of humor
  3. It's truly heartbreaking to see tragedies like this. My sincerest condolences to both of the ff's families and FD families.
  4. I was listening to WP fireground from when it first started. I give these guys all the credit in the world. Yes we all train for the big one and yes someone us get to fight it but few of us have to fight it under such extreme conditions. Big kudos to those guys and you make the whole brotherhood proud. Great job by WPFD and all of the other units on scene. Way to go !
  5. All the best to his family, his FDNY family, and his RFD family. Reading obits for guys that young really make you think twice about how good you really have it in life
  6. Truer words were never spoken
  7. Why is it that it is 2010 and we still hear things about career and volunteer ? To me it is either professional or unprofessional. There are good and bad people in both the career and volunteer fields. I concede there are volunteers who want to ride the backstep with a beer in one hand and a cigareette in the other talking about how good the old days were. THere are also career guys who still feel that no volunteer be;ongs on the same fire scene just becuase he is a volunteer regardless of how much training and professionalism he may bering. Let's accept that all and move on. Let's all celebrate the good people in this industry and help each other just like the banner on the top of the page says. A pat on the back and a handshake helps a lot more then a hammer to the head and I along with others need to remember that.

  10. no its to retrofit firehouses (not the 2 new structures) with approved exhaust removal system
  11. This grant was written for an accrediated FF1/FF2 course to be taught by a NYSFI or a WC FI to teach the course and thus gain certificates. THe point of the Federal Govt. giving out large sums of money for training is in an effort to raise the certification levels of the awarded FD[
  12. Just read this in Firescue Interactive (Published by FDTN).: U.S. Dept of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology complteted the first study that quantifies thecompletion time for tasks of 2,3, and 4 person crews. Study shows that 4 person crews had water on a fire 15 % faster then a 2 person crew and completed a primary search 30 % faster then a 2 person crew. None of this should be all that shokcing but never seen a study that actually quantified the time before.
  13. Listen I do not know where you get your facts from but here are facts as they pertain to the tower ladder. THe village is the one who came to us about recloating to the south end of town as our old firehouse was obsoltete. No pumper would fit in there without derious modification. THey not only knew of the concept of not fitting they made it happen for us. THat's a fact. No one just went out and spent that kind of money and said whoops that didn't fit. I have heard that has happened in Westchester but that was not hte case here. You could not fit any 2000's style pumper in that firehouse it simply outgrew its useful life.

  15. it may have been Bill Peters its been 5 years I do not recall. My point was more that this was not just some crew of volunteer idiots thumbing through Fire Engineering and the ALF catalog and say oh yeah we want that and oh yeah we need that. The Village hired someone in the field for a second opinion and he not only liked it but added to it (they were mechanical and equipment achanges not anything superficial). In addition one of the committee members was a career ladder man with FDNY so this was not just some hairbrained idea. Not sure if that is what you were inferring there but just clearing the air on that.
  16. two different trucks 2 different consultants: The consultant that quote referred to was Ed Peters from Jersey City FD who was retained by the Village Board toconsult on the 2005 Tower Ladder spec. East West Apparatus was retained by IFD and the Tarrytown VIllage Board on their pumper projects in 2009
  17. it was relettered and striped with an irish flag chevron in the back. The village per their current procurement policy will put the old one on auction to help offset the cost of the Vilvo. It cost just over $50 K with the cascade purchase and install included. It is head and sholders above what we run with now and will be a great addition. It will also carry the paratech strut system, a plethora of water rescue PPE and equipment along with HAZMAT, extinguishers, rehab capabilities, along with salvage and overhaul equipment. It also has a 25 KW generator plus air and electric cord reels.
  18. this truck has 5 scba seats in the walk in box plus 2 seats in the cab. it has a 6 bottle cascade system installed after the purchase. IT was the former port authority truck and it replaces the old U-61 and will keep the same designation.
  19. what people do not realize is that the Village Board hired a consultant to spec that truck and he actually made changes to the existing spec that raised the price of the rig by $15 K
  20. "Seems like there is always some kind of internal drama with Tarrytown FD over the years, either with personel, stations, equipment, gaming machines, training tower, parades etc" Listen as someone who is supposed to be running an above board posting site do not call out departments past issues like that. Everyday that you turn on a TV news some departments cop or firefighter did something wrong whether it be on the job or off duty. Please do not make me start a list and you off all people should know that. All departments FIRE PD OR EMS PAID OR VONUNTEER have skeletons. Do not dare use this site to call out another's past "
  21. Listen guy you are not from here and do not know 1/10 of what actually went on. First off have you seen these buildings or are you going off of price tags alone ?And yes a lot of residents including some FD members wwere upset about the actual price tag of the project and not what the politicians said it would cost (they made a bold claim that building 2 buildings would be $760K cheaper then 1 2 bay building) THat unfortunately was no where nears true. And i did not use the term fiscally responsible, they did. And as said earlier a lot of the unrest within the FD was against hte politicians being responsible on the firetruck project yetthrowing money around on other projects within the village without any regards to "fiscal responsibility"
  22. Actually the VIllage of TT put in for AFG grants for hte last 3 years for apparatus. All 3 years theapparatus applications were denied but the VIllage/FD did just get an AFG Operations and Safety grant for $243 K for the 2009 application year
  23. what a lot of the uproar was over was partially firematics but was also a lot politics. what people outside of TT were not really in the loop about was that the same Village Board built a lavish (by their words not ours) VIllage Hall with soup to nuts ammenities with certain Truestees using quotes like "whats another $235 K when y ou are spending $10 Million ?? " Then to turn around and tell the FD that they needed to be fiscally responsible it left a bad tasste in many peoples mouthes
  24. THe rigs are not substantially more then anyone else in the county is getting that is just not true. Also we keep our trucks longer then most departments. THe tower ladder replaced a 25 year old engine and the Crimson will replace a 1988.In addition the 1988 E One aerial will be replaced as well so by the time it is all said and done it will be a 23-25 year old lag time between trucks. And a serious question to those who get $350 K or $450 K trucks how long are they kept > 15 years ? Also the village pays workmens comp for all employees of all departments so if it drives the FD budget up, it drives all budgets up.
  25. A lot of the hard feelings stem from the fact that when you subtract the Greenburgh protection money from the FD budget the village pays about $100 K for a fully functioning FD. Many who were close to the process felt that unlike years past there was minimal input from the FD and that if the Village of TT was so worried about making cuts they need to realize that out of the $18 million village budget the FD represents $100 K or 1/180 of that budget. Seems like they should be a blip on the radar compared to other departments or projects.
