  1. This is similar in design to Rescue 1, but a shorter body and larger tank. Engine 8 also has a front suction and one additional seat in the rear of the cab.

Engine 8's 2015 KME engine will be reassigned to Engine 7 in Springdale.

  5. I think we just watched a very tangible example of some of the insanity taking hold on the fire service. This Chief is all too proud of his accomplishment here, but he should have taken a break from digesting every "trend" in the fire service before he spec'd his new machine. SCBAs taken out of cab, nothing new. Phoenix and several large Department in Southern California have done this for years. However, taking them out due to carcinogen concerns is a really weak case. What does the Chief intend to do about the PPE worn by firefighters? Think that might be a sink for carcinogens? How bout the bottom of your boots, ever really think what is hanging out there? I'd be a lot less concerned about a hard surface such as an SCBA bottle or harness that can be wiped down after each use, then the proper gear cleaning habits or hygiene of a pretty fluid and dynamic group of end-users of this rig. Not to mention, the extra long cab to accommodate the new SCBA compartment and the top mount pump panel. He just built a rig that is probably running upwards of 36-38 feet overall length. Although it is Texas, I am sure the guy driving the truck will really appreciate the wheel base the next time he has to try and turn into the driveway and fit between the brick pillars of every Ewing estate look-alike.

  10. Seth, I was out at Pierce this past week and several new version of the Ascendant were getting ready for the trip to Indy. The only one that I saw up close was a tandem version of the 107' that has become so popular. The truck is very similar to the single, but with a more traditional body found on the present 105' ladders. Essentially, you are increasing body and ground ladder storage and also improving weight distribution and braking. I was told that there is also supposed to be tractor-drawn version somewhere in production or perhaps will make an appearance at the show (I did not see it anywhere on the line). Outside of the Ascendant configurations, they should have their usual run of equipment on display inside the Lucas dome and also a separate Contender section. I'll try and attach a picture of the tandem Ascendant.
  11. It is an extended cab Enforcer, with the Arrow XT headlight bezel option. Probably not a PUC, as the lower pump area has a hose tray, which is not available on a PUC.

  13. I am not sure as to what the benefit of a Dash CF would be to the Stamford Fire Department. The new CF has a very obtuse interior cab configuration and offers absolutely no benefit to the application that the Department is looking for or needs. The Pierce Enforcer is a very practical chassis and offered us everything we needed and nothing that we did not need. Unlike many of the Departments often represented in apparatus discussions on this site, we operate with a given amount of money for a purchase. What we have to spend, is what we have to spend and not a penny more. This vehicle incorporated several design components that factored heavily into the final price tag. Getting everything to work for the money we had allocated and available was not an easy task. The truck should be delivered by the end of this year or early 2018.
  14. By all accounts, KME could be an excellent company. They have plenty of talented workers, who have the ability to produce a product that could rival any of the other more reputable manufacturers. KME has suffered from years of mismanagement by a ruling family that had failed to invest in their people or infrastructure. Many of their senior managers were relatives or buddies and did not possess the ability to follow the industry trends. The REV group may have temporarily saved the company from financial ruin and has removed many of the management problems, but the company has a big hill to climb in being retrained and retooled to compete with the likes of other products. Without knowing the specifics, the Horry County story is probably the results of the old mentality toward the product. The new owner has big plans and made big promises. Only time will tell if they can deliver on those promises. I for one, would be very reluctant to recommend their product until the product and culture improves.

  16. No interior stairs? Really? Is that the best you can come up with? You did notice the members that were seen in the video walking inside on the second floor with hand lights (at the same time that someone was arbitrarily taking out a window from a ladder). Looked good for Mommy or your Istantgram profile pic, could have just as easily been opened up by hand from the guy standing inside. The attic space on a house like this is relatively small. Fires in attics such as this work best when water actually comes in contact with the fire. Given that the roof is designed to shed water, a couple of holes from below and some application of water and we can save the numerous tones, air horn extravaganza, and epic battle poses for a fire that may actually be deserving of such. The more videos like this that appear, I really wonder if the fire service of today is about production for social media or about effectiveness of tactics and extinguishment. Flame on.
  17. Kudos to them, it looks like the fire eventually went out. Their uncoordinated approach to ventilate every possible pane of glass on the second floor was very helpful in allowing the fire in the attic to eventually enjoy sufficient oxygen that allowed for the overly abundant display of air horns. Just imagine what an interior line on the second floor with a few experienced jakes that brought some hooks to open up and apply water from below could have done? Thank you for your service!
  18. As usual, this entire latest episode could have been completely avoided, but some can't help themselves. I have a good idea who pushed this issue and scripted the letter for the Chiefs. This is someone who has a long and ugly history of creating tension within his own Department and with career Firefighters. Unfortunately, the Department where he serves as an Assistant Chief is in an abysmal state of affairs and has only a handful of members left. Most civilized organizations would have sent this imbecile to the curb a long time ago.
  19. NFD2004, I would use the first letter that was written clearly against Local 786 as an example of the true feelings of most volunteer Chiefs. It was only after they received a significant backlash from City officials and members of their own organizations that they chose to write the "updated" version. Much like we see in political races...they only walk-back their remarks after they realize their inappropriate comments did not get the traction that they anticipated.
  20. Laytheline, Sorry, but you are about 8 years late to this story and discussion. The time to debate structure, charter requirements, chain of command, etc. has long been established through a series of charter revisions, court actions, and collective bargaining agreements. The staffing and number of career apparatus are contained within the CBA and recently include an increase by 2 per shift. I am sure that future CBAs with the Union will discuss and hopefully include staffing adjustments to include additional Battalion Chief or equivalent level supervision. In addition, the Long Ridge paid drivers issue will eventually and inevitably include some type of incorporation into the City staffing levels. The chain of command has also now been clearly defined within the latest CBA. As far as the fate of the remaining volunteer companies, with the exception of one, they are almost all now nonexistent. Simply put, due to the woefully inept "leaders" that continue to be voted into place by their members, they have allowed themselves to serve more as gadflies then a respectable ally in service. I do not believe any of them have the ability to assess the pathetic state of their organizations or their future. They only know strife and discontent and now appear to relish at new opportunities to spend their energy and money on issues outside of public safety or strengthening their Departments. Sad, but the crafty lingo that some of their T shirts would be more appropriate to read: "I have seen the enemy and the enemy is us".
  21. Engine 6 is still running a quint. Engine 5's former quint is being used as a reserve. Both rigs are tired and will probably be retired in the next few years.
  22. The only problem has been from those with a fear of change from past practice. There are many on both sides of this equation that suffer from a lack of exposure to other and much larger systems and are often consumed with only accepting things being done as they witnessed solely within the confines of the Stamford system. Since the operational and reorganization changes that first started with the formation of Engine 7 in 1997, I can recall those that were quick to scream that the sky would fall if this or that happened.... To my knowledge, the sky has not fallen...yet. In Stamford's case, quick change occurs slowly, but with the finalization of this contract, many new changes will occur to the Stamford fire service.
  23. NFD2004, The Stamford FD currently has 9 career Engines, 3 career Trucks, and 1 career Rescue that all ride with 4 person minimum (the latest contract increased E8 and E9 to 4 minimum from 3). The on-duty Deputy is staffed with 2.
  24. Alan's last point is one that should not be missed. The new members are a critical component of what the future will hold. The same holds true on both sides as the Stamford Fire Department has seen a huge influx with new members over the past 5 years. How will we teach them? Will they be polluted from issues lingering long before they arrived? (in some cases..born?). The contract that was finally settled last night took more than 5 years to come to an agreement. There are MANY changes contained within. I do not speak for the membership, but not all of the changes will be digested easily, but they will be carried out. I give a lot of credit to my Union for their willingness to lead and also take some risk with some of these changes. The easy road for them would have been to sit back and negotiate a bland and safe contract that maintains a status quo with little more than wage increases. As not to disagree with many of the points made by here, I would challenge the same leaders within the volunteer fire service that were quick with their poison pen and speed dial to see what type of collective change they have agreed to? I can think of several that have completely buried their heads in the rear end of their puppet "leaders" and will continue to operate as if it is 1975. I really can't believe that none of them did not realize or comprehend the magnitude of their last minute campaign to try and defeat the labor contract? In the end, the career firefighters have finally settled their contract (without opposition) and the volunteer Chiefs spent more time and energy to try and sabotage the career and volunteer relationship (and completely failed at it..again). At some point, do any of these Chiefs ever conduct a progress report for their own Departments or decisions?? I can think of only one Department in Stamford that could find any type of positive response to that question. I wonder if the members that continually elect these same clowns into office will start asking the same question about a progress report and find the courage to remove those that have not provided a ounce of progress in decades? (but I think I already know the answer to that question).
