I just have to add that while chocking the apparatus is an obvious safety precaution, realistically the truck is going to jump the chock. Always be sure the engine is in pump not only by looking for the 5 cent green light to be on, but to see that the rpms and speedometer have risen. With the Maxi Brake on and the pump in the proper gear It is HIGHLY unlikely that the engine will slip out of pump gear and into drive AND over power the Maxi. Again I am not saying not to USE the chocks, but look at big rigs making deliveries, they have no form of chocks, and their parking brakes are sufficient. JMO.

Just heard on the news of a big raise for NYPD! Somewhere in the upper 20% The new raise will put NYPD Sergeants over 6 figures a year.

I was never a fan of him at first, but if you look at everything he has said at first now, if we had listened we would be a much better country. If we all think in the box we might as all be drones, and just do whatever our government tells us. I agree with X635, he has been given a bad rep. I understand he can be annoying, and obnoxious, but how could you not laugh when he was trying to get congress members and their sons to enlist in the army.

I think the fire srvice should definately be supplemental to EMS, but not be the "champion." I think EMS is too important to be merged with the Fire Service. It would be miss managed, do EMTs and Paramedics need higher salary? Yes, absolutely, but I think its too much for one agency to handle both, JMO.

Just saw this on anohter board: Baskin Robbins - 31 cent ice cream scoop - May 2, 2007 - 5PM to 10 PM On May 2, ice cream scoops will be just $.31! That's right, a 2.5 oz scoop for such a cheap price. What's the catch? The money raised from the sale of these scoops will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Baskin-Robbins will make a $100,000 donation to help familes of fallen firefighters. Check out the link below for more details. Enjoy! http://www.baskinrobbins.com/Promotion/31cent.aspx

It really angers me that people are AGAINST a Career Chief, I mean seriously are you out of your mind? No offense to anyone, listen I admit I volunteer and am a career firefighter, a big union no no. But seriously what is the operating budget of Larchmont I presume in the millions. A career chief needs to be put in power. I See in my volunteer dept that a new chief ever 2 years means no progress. A career chief will only benefit your dept. Also look at the illegal usage of FD funds in Long Island not to recently. When I read the article I think this is the major justification of the chiefs position. They are not disbanding the volunteers, they are creating a position that wil be 100% dedicated to operating and progressing the dept. It shouldn't be a round robin type of position that gets passed around cause his grandpa was a fireman 100 years ago. I cannot believe that residents are even sending in that letter of protest, If I was a resident I would be ecstatic that my village wants to hire someone who will keep me safe. I wish my village would pay and hire a complete professional staffed fire house. Unfortunately they do not, so I get to have some fun and further train myself while I am off. I know my post kind of jumps around a bit, but I just wish people would stop caring about tradition and look at the fire service progressively, also I am pretty sure that everyone on this board is a working class citizen. We should be happy that the village is creating jobs, which helps our economy, and gives someone a shot at the best job in the world. I am not trying to start a war but rather a discussion, I am sorry if you feel personally insulted. also one more thing to add: this qoute from the above letter " Your Fire Department goes to less then TEN fire alarms a week! the rest are EMS runs, down wires, stuck elevators, cars leaking gas etc. You have only about 3 real "working" fires per year. Individual members of your paid staff may go years without working at an actual fire. In the last 30 years, the number of fires in the US is down 30%- and that is BEFORE self-extinguishing cigarettes were introduced!" So why dont we fire all the career staff, disband the volunteers, and people can just put the fires out themselves? It's the same logic you are using.

I have had the pleasure of participating with puund ridge at their live fire training run by Capt Morris Res. 1. I learned a lot and had a ton of fun working with a lot of guys. They also have a great system in place to pack that 5000' of 5" I tell you it was not bad at all.

My advice to EVERYONE, is just CALM DOWN. The city is not going to get back to you for awhile, trust me its best to just forget about it, and continue with whatever else your doing. The city never gets anythign done on time, and you will drive yourself crazy waiting for results.

By MICHAEL VIRTANEN, Associated Press Writer Wed Feb 7, 4:17 PM ET ALBANY, N.Y. - Walk, jog or bicycle across a New York street with an iPod plugged in your ears and you could get slapped with a $100 ticket under a new law proposed by a legislator from Brooklyn. ADVERTISEMENT State Sen. Carl Kruger's bill would also outlaw the use of cell phones, Blackberries, video games or other electronic devices when crossing the street. He cited the death of a 21-year-old man who was listening to music when he stepped off a curb and was hit by a bus in Brooklyn in September, and the death of a 23-year-old iPod listener last month. "If you're so involved in your electronic device that you can't see or hear a car coming, this is indicative of a larger problem that requires some sort of enforcement beyond the application of common sense," Kruger said. Jason Koppel, Kruger's chief of staff, said listeners would merely have to pull the earphones out for the few seconds it takes to cross the street. Kruger said the legislation would be introduced this week. Charlotte Troisgros, 16, a Manhattan student talking on her cell phone in a crosswalk near City Hall on Wednesday, laughed and said the law may not be such a bad idea. "You really don't pay attention. You might get hit by a car," she said. E. Christopher Murray, a civil liberties attorney, said the proposal is excessive. "With our schools failing, health costs out of control, and crushing property taxes, the legislature would rather play mother by legislating how we cross the street," he said. "What's next? Do you get fined if you don't look both ways?" http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070207/ap_on_...ian_electronics

There is no right or wrong way, depend on the MVA. Depends what is safer for each circumstance. Personally I feel to have the ambulance IFO the accident away from oncoming traffic. When packaging the patient and putting them into the ambulance you are not exposed to oncoming traffic as you would be if the ambulance itself is the buffer. When you put the patient in the rear you are exposed to traffic.

Westchester county police department, is a county wide agency, it would be nice to have the same thing firematically. I know we will never see it in our lifetime, but it would be taking a step in the right direction, and progressing with the times. I understand why it will not happen soon. I know that the higher authorities "commissioners," chiefs, etc... are not willing to do this, but what if they were forced to? After all the public are our bosses, wether career or volunteer. What if the government stepped in ordered a county wide merger of emergency services. This tech team, County Haz-Mat, county squads in lower westchester. This merger of resources is a step in the right direction. As far as union wise: The union might be scared off at first but WHAT if and this is a big what if the union steps in and demands that wages be comparible to the current highest salaried department? Now the depts will be funded not only locally but as well as by the county and possibly the state. The above was just some thoughts to discuss, I am not imposing this on anyone. Also this leads me to something I wanted to write for awhile now so here goes: Believe me I am more then happy doing my job in my dept. I get a pay check to do something I love, I do not voice my opinions. I come in, I shut up I do as ordered and do it to the best of my ability. This is why I prefer to remain anonymous. I do not want my personal views and opinions to be known in my dept. Its not my place to make those decsions. If my officer tells me something to do something I do not think is the 100% right way to do something, as long as it is safe I do as ordered, and I think that this is a problem with the newer (my) generation of fire fighting. I was talking to a career cheif now ret. and he even told me that there is nothing funnier then a 5yr veteran thinking they know everything, and know the best way to do it, and gripe about how the dept is being run. Just shut up and do your job. This ret. chief freely admits he doesn't know everything, but he does his job to the best of his ability.

Do you think it would be possible to have a westchester county fire department? Isn't this done in LA County? I have alwyas suggested this, but as I have stated before I don't think that career chiefs are ready to relinquish their power.
-
I would be in favor of a sort of inspection or audit by the state or even a federeal level. I think some issues especially in the westchester career end could be minimum staffing per rig, outdated apparatus. I think that a MAJOR PROBLEM in westchester career depts, is that the chiefs do not want to relinquish ANY command to a higher power, when they all should. I think we need more of a command like a larger city, more battalion career chiefs, deputys, more suppurt services, a better coordinated mutual aide system, and 4 man engines and trucks in EVERY dept and EVERY rig. OK sorry rant over

http://www.newsok.com/video/87431/ Watch past the commercial. I saw this on another forum, and thought this was pretty cool. I am not saying that this was the smartest move, or it was or was not endangering anybody against safety precautions or anything like that, I just think its pretty neat. But kudos to the pilot, excellent flying, even to save the life of a deer. I know there is a pilot on this board chris (?) wonder what he/you thinks of this?

what about people with the address 666? They don't change it at least the one near me.

Do you think the price will compare to flying out of LGA and JFK??? I certainly hope so but am doubtful, I have never flown jetblue, but from reading blogs here and hearing others opinions I want to book my next flight with them. I was told HPN is only allowed to take in and depart a certain number of commercial jets. I know its very convenient to fly out of westchester but the cost is way too high. I certainly hope Jetblue comes and brings there low fares too!

Of all the forms of mercury, elemental mercury is the most commonly swallowed form of mercury, usually from a broken thermometer. Fortunately, elemental mercury from a thermometer is not absorbed from the stomach and will not cause any poisoning in a healthy person. In a healthy person, the slippery swallowed mercury will roll into the stomach, out in to the bowels and will be quickly eliminated without causing any symptoms. A person with severe inflammatory bowel disease or those with a fistula (hole or opening) in their gut may have problems with mercury if it is not all cleared out, resulting in prolonged exposure. Handling liquid mercury for a very short period of time usually does not result in any problems. An allergic rash is possible, though. Mercury is not well absorbed across the skin so skin contact is not likely to cause mercury poisoning, especially with a brief one-time exposure. Even if a person has cuts in their skin, mercury is too heavy to be contained by a cut. Merely washing the wound well will wash the mercury out of the wound. http://www.calpoison.org/public/mercury.html
