  1. Hey guys. Just an update on the last FF exam. The FDNY sent out letters to the top 1000 list numbers. The letters were for the upcoming prep classes for the CPAT. The academy class that just started was the last class coming from the previous lists. The new list from test #6019 will start being used for all upcoming academy classes starting with this summer. There is a post dedicated to the new list on firehouse.com with more than enough information to answer any questions. Good luck to everyone!
  2. When you fail you get a letter a week or two after the test. You would have known by now if you failed it.
  3. Maybe one of the medical students was taking their work home with them.
  4. I agree with the other guys. PAY ATTENTION!! The class is very easy if you just pay attention and keep up with your work. Don't sweat the practical, just take your time, think, and practice as much as you need to.
  5. Just got my results in the mail. It was the same thing we got a while ago but this time it had the answers and the score. I got a 99.36 I think with a list number in the 1400's.
  6. Its alcohol, not water. Kind of like the video of the guy powering a 27" tv with a set of RCA cables and a AAA battery. False!!
  7. Just received my canvas letter from Larchmont also. The pay is way to low to cosider a position there. If I don't accept the position do I remain on the list for future employment opportunities or am I taken off the list? Also, what are the salary ranges? Is 27,000 low or average? Thanks.
  8. Yea, I had 5 veteran points. It helped a lot.
  9. congrats, good job!
  10. Agreed, but you should know since you live in Putnam that bad guys are few and far between. We get patrols on every call, sometimes more than one car, and on occasion every car in the sector or zone. It works in Greenburgh where there are a lot more "bad guys" why can't it work here. Officers are first responders as it is and most are EMTs why not just upgrade? It would be far better to have paramedic flycars like we do now but if the county doesn't want to pay we have to get creative with some other options. Its just a thought.
  11. Just a thought but lets see where it goes. I haven't thought this through too much and I'm not sure if it would even work but here it goes. What if there is a system similar to Greenburgh where the County sheriffs office and carmel police had deputies / Paramedics? If there was a known ALS call they could dispatch a patrol as the medic. Patrols respond to all EMS calls anyway. A downfall is if the deputy is tied up in another call but if its thought out right it might be able to work. This system should definitely be cheaper for the county. The problem is finding deputies that would want to play both roles. Lets here what you guys think.
  12. Bls: 15A, 15C, 15E, 27A. 27A and 15E are tour 2 and 3 only. Als: 15V
  13. I've used it a couple of times. Its great, especially when your short handed. The one downfall if any is that it can be a little violent so its important to watch that tube.
  14. A lot less energy for internal defibs. No worries. The patient can sometimes tell when its coming. I couldn't imagine getting so use to v-tach that you know when its about to happen. Where external is around 120-200 J biphasic, I think internals are around 10-20 J.
  15. strangest thing I've ever seen.
  16. And thats exactly why I do it. I love the job. I couldn't picture myself doing anything else. I could have went through nursing school instead of paramedic school and graduated in the same time but earning twice as much. But I love what I do. I could put on a suit and tie and go work for my dad as a financial consultant making a lot more than I do now but I won't. the only thing that will get me out of my medic job is a fire or police career. Like they said in the article the money and benefits just aren't there for medics/EMT's. But I will always be in emergency services one way or another. Hopefully one day it will be possible to support a family on medic pay/benefits.
  17. Look at this thing. Tons of room to work. [attachmentid=2977] [attachmentid=2978] [attachmentid=2979]
  18. Thats the way it should be. Medics and EMT's should have the same pay and benefits as firefighters and police officers. $20 an hour top pay with no pension and mediocre benefits is horrible compared to other civil service jobs. Again why would cities raise taxes and fund there own EMS when they can hire a private company for less money. I would love to stay a paramedic the rest of my life its just not practical. Sorry to go off on a tangent here but I needed to rant a little on this issue.
  19. I agree. I have done my share of BLS transports and most of them are taxi rides. Most the people that I have taken only needed the ambulance because they were debilitated in some way where they couldn't sit in a wheelchair or "bed bound". I can't even count how many people walked out and sat on the stretcher. They do make stretcher ambulettes now but why would an ambulance company buy them when they can get insurance companies to approve ambulances for ten times as much money. A $50 ambulette trip costs about $450 if it went by ambulance. It comes down to ems being a business. Fire and police are emergency services usually municipal and paid for through taxes and the government. EMS is a business with private companies penny pinching there reputation into the ground. Until that changes EMS will always be the way it is.
  20. I 100% second that. EMS calls outway fire calls atleast 2:1 in every district I know of yet ems gets absolutely nothing in return. Like the article says no unions, no retirement with the exception on NYC, and no recognition. Its very hard to keep a career in EMS. There is just no money in it. The way the system is set up is the main problem. Think about most municipalities. They have a paid police dept, paid or volunteer municiple fire dept., and a private company for ems. Thats the main problem, until ems is a paid civil service position there will never be a good career in it.
  21. It was one of the easier tests I've taken. A/C would have been great.
  22. Camelbacks are great. We were all issued one in the army. They're good when you need to keep your hands free. I bet you could find them on ebay pretty cheap.
  23. I was told the $150 kit included a helmet, personal trauma kit, and pads.
  24. Hey guys. The kit they are talkiing about is a drop leg personal trauma kit. You can get them through galls or blackhawk as well as on ebay new for around $50. I'm using a training helmet thats non-ballistic and foam ear plugs. Knee pads are up to you but I would recommend gloves.
