  1. I think the event went rather well and I'm really glad to hear that everybody had fun!! EMSWhitecloud....I unfortunately do not have any pictures of the event since I was a lil pre-occupied and I would never try to incriminate you if I had such evidence (LOL). PS....I bet the dinner/dance is gonna be a fun time too...I can't wait! To Yorktown FD...Both Mohegan and Yorktown have a real great relationship and lets continue that tradition! We are always there for eachother, no matter what!!! Just look at this weekend....first, you had your fire on Saturday, then we had ours early AM Sunday. Again, both depts worked through them together.
  2. Since I am 100% Pro FAS Team, I believe that automatic dispatch of a FAS Team is essential. The first 5-10 minutes of a fire are the worst and this is typically how long it takes a FAS Team to get on the road. I think dispatch of a team should occur as soon as a fire is reported. I know Mahopac Falls FD has Mohegan on automatic dispatch as soon as a 10-75 is transmitted. All the chief has to say is "working fire" and Mohegan FAST and a tanker from Mahopac are automatically dispatched through pre-set protocols through 40-Control (Putnam County). I would like to see depts start initiating automatic dispatching of FAS Teams. Heck, I'd rather get turned around then arrive to have to do something when its too late!!
  3. You have to admit...fun was had by all, right up to the end.
  4. Happy Holidays to all!! Reminder...Mohegan Holiday Friendship Night this Sat Night 12/27 starting at 7pm through ???? at Rt 6 firehouse. Roast Beef dinner to be served. Hope to see you all there!
  5. Around 12:15-12:30 Mohegan responded to Sherman Ct off Morris La, of Lexington Ave (Yorktown) for Unknown Type fire. 2261 and L-35 arrived to find smoke showing. 1 line charged from L-35 to basemant area and Eng. 250 hit hydrant. Fire knocked down quickly, checking for extension. Con Edison and C&O Team requested to scene. Apparatus List: L-35, Eng. 250, 2261, 2266, Mohegan Ambulance 69B?, C & O Vehicle 1404. More info to come once available (I'm unfortunately working today). Ongoing as of 13:30.
  6. You know you're a firefighter when.. 1. You can tell what type of fire it is by the smell of smoke 10 miles away. 2. You have ever had a heated debate over the color of firetrucks. 3. You have ever spent 10 min trying to force open a door only to have someone come along and open it by turning the handle. 4. You have ever taken 10 or more showers in 1 day. 5. You have ever been airborne without an aircraft and water was your thrust. 6. You have ever slept in a hosebed. 7. You've ever clung to the air horn chord for dear life because the driver is insane. 8. You have ever played jingle bells at Xmas time on the air horns to clear traffic. 9. You have ever said, "she's hot tonight" and not been talking about a girl. 10. You have ever had "yoda ears." 11. You have ever smoked and there wasn't a cigarette in sight. 12. You have ever stomped out a fire with your boots because you couldn't wait for water. 13. Your kids are afraid to get into water fights with you. 14. You have ever uttered the words, "I can break the door if you need me to Cap," before actually testing to see if it is locked. 15. If you have more toy fire trucks than your kids do. 16. You run towards a dangerous situation and not away from it. 17. You have ever been dressed from head to foot in rubber and it was not a sexual experience. 18. Your idea of ventilation is done with a chainsaw and not a Bag-Valve-Mask. 19. You've ever cursed a guy for amor-alling the seats in the rig. 20. You take great joy in smashing the windows of a car parked in a fire zone or in front of a hydrant. 21. You take pride in the fact that you haven't washed your gear in years. 22. All the shirts you own say you are a firefighter. 23. The smell of a fire excites you more than sex does. 24. A great stop has nothing to do with a moving vehicle. 25. You roll around in anything that just burned to make your new gear look old. 26. You have ever juggled hot coals with your gloves. -From www.american-firefighter.com
  7. From what I heard today, his PASS Alarm might have been muffeled due to the mattresses on top of him. Because of this Rescue 3 had a tough time locating him.
  8. I totally agree with running both northbound and southbound on the parkway. In Mohegan, 2 engines and 2 ambulances are sent to the Taconic State Parkway for MVA's while only the 2 engines will respond for car fires. Eng. 252 out of the Jefferson Valley Station will run Southbound from Rt 6 along with a Mohegan ambulance. Engine 254 from the Furnace Woods Station along with an ambulance from Yorktown VAC will respond Northbound from Rt. 202.
  9. With today's apparatus bigger then older rigs, should departments expand the apparatus bays or should departments custom build apparatus to fit into these smaller bays? I feel that a decision depends on cost of the reconstruction project versus the cost of creating a custom built rig to fit into a smaller bay. Also, are there any departments buying custom built rigs primarliy to fit into smaller bays?
  10. Seems like alot of people are getting the flu this year. I know of quite a few that have had the flu or currently have it. Hope all you sick one's feel better.
  11. Yup, I had nozzle for initial knockdown, but let FF 266 and FF 213 play as well. Some minor corrections....1st car fire was at the end of Lakeland Ave. Also, Eng 252 was rig that responded to 2nd car fire.
  12. I feel that taking pictures of accident scenes to use as medical records per say is something that should be looked into further. It is beneficial on all ends...from the first responders having backing for their decisions all the way to the ER staff with visible aspects on the mechanism of injury to a patient. This is something that EMS agencies should look into to keep on the rigs.
  13. Yeah....what happened? The other day you wanted a snowball fight...now you dont like the snow. Whats up with that? You should just hire someone to shovel out your car. Although you are sick, so thats understandable.
  14. Sad news to hear. Does this count as an LODD? I feel it should since he was technically responding to an alarm.
  15. Having an attendant on board the ambulance made all the difference Sun night. With the snow/ice on the ground, the extra pair of hands helped tremendously when moving the patient to the rig on the stretcher. Attendants also are valuable when doing lift assists and moving patients on stair chairs. Even the simpliest calls can use attendants because they can do as little as carry the ems bags or help back the rig into a driveway, but in the end they are a big part of the crew!
  16. Bedford firehouse plan becomes campaign issue By SEAN GORMAN THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: December 7, 2003) A controversial plan to build a new Bedford Village firehouse on Route 22 has become a hot topic between two candidates running for fire commissioner. John Barry, a fire commissioner who is running for a third term, said he's "100 percent" in favor of building the 21,750-square-foot building at Route 22 and South Brook Road, a project that's been estimated to cost about $7.5 million. He will face Charles Persico, a 38-year-old Bedford Village resident, who is raising concerns about the project's potential costs and location. "I'm representing an awful lot of people that oppose it (the new firehouse construction), and I think the concerns they've raised are valid concerns," said Persico, vice president of City & Suburban Federal Savings Bank in Yonkers. But Barry, who has been a member of the department since 1975, said the new building is needed to provide more space for volunteers, adding that the department needs another tanker truck that can't be put in the current building, which is on the Village Green. "The existing firehouse ... it's getting very cramped for space. The firefighters have to don their gear and 6 to 8 inches behind them, there's large trucks moving out," Barry, a 47-year-old plumber, said Friday. "We have a large need for storage space." The fire district's proposal is undergoing a review before the Bedford Planning Board, which would have to approve a site plan for the project. The $7.5 million would pay for the land, construction and other costs, such as landscaping, Barry said. Commissioners want to take a 20-year bond to voters to pay for the project and have estimated it would cost $2.46 per $1,000 of assessed value. Justin Kernan, a fire commissioner, said he wasn't sure when the district planned to take the bond proposal to voters. For the owner of a home assessed at $84,600, the fire district median, that would come to a $208.12 bill. Persico said he wants to see fire officials investigate whether they can expand the current building, and said he doesn't think it's appropriate to put it at the Route 22 location, which is just south of the Village Green, in a residential area. "I just don't think that's the right location for it," Persico said. "I'm certainly in favor of providing any equipment needs that are necessary." But Barry said the current firehouse location — next to two historic buildings makes it difficult to expand the building. "It is going to be a little bit of a change. However, diagonally across from the (proposed location) is a large Catholic school," Barry said about the Route 22 site. "Across the street from the southern end of the piece of property is the Verizon phone building. ... It's not all that much out of character." The plan has sparked heated debate within the community and Fire Department. A letter from Persico takes aim at plans to move the firehouse to Route 22 and South Brook Road. "They will tear the heart out of our village, and isolate themselves from village life," the letter states. "It will saddle each of us in this very small district with an immense debt load." But Chief Andrew Klein, who has said he supports the plan to build the new firehouse, wrote his own letter to district residents urging them to pick Barry, who has been on the five-member commission for 10 years. Klein wrote that the need for "first-rate fire protection and EMS services far outweighs an increase in the fire district tax." Klein said Friday Barry's firefighting experience makes him the better candidate. Persico said Friday he plans to be a "civilian representative" on the commission, which oversees a department with about 45 active volunteers. "I'm better suited at volunteering my expertise in terms of being a fire commissioner," Persico said. "I'm a businessman. I have real estate expertise." Klein suggested in his letter that Persico had been hand-picked by the Rev. Thomas A. Hughart, the Fire Department's Protestant chaplain who lives across from the proposed firehouse site. Klein wrote that the chaplain's only interest is to keep the firehouse away from his home. "That's really stretching the truth," said Hughart, the former pastor of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, next to the current firehouse. "We've lived next to the Fire Department before — no problem." Hughart added that the purpose of Persico's campaign is to "give a voice to the people of the community." Persico said, "Rev. Hughart has his own opinion, and I have mine. I'm the candidate, not Rev. Hughart." Fire commissioners serve five-year terms and are not paid. Fire district residents can vote at the firehouse on Village Green from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
  17. The need for 2 ladders and the Squirt (Eng. 250) in Mohegan is exactly as X635 pointed out. Other buildings include 8 other schools in Lakeland School District and 2 more in Hen Hud School District. Also, Treetop's, Cortlandt, and Holy Comforter Nursing Homes, plus the Phoenix Academy (Big cross tower visible from Taconic Pkwy). Yeshiva and Volunteers of America complexes and multiple car dealerships along Rt. 202 and many big name stores along Rt 6. Many strip malls and a few thousand homes also are spread out over 42 Sq mile district. Industrial sites are located on Croton Ave/Furnace Dock Rd, Arlo La and Navajo St. The response for a Commercial Alarm or a Structure Fire is as follows: Ladder 35 out of HQ on Rt 6/Lexington Ave with one of the following: 1) L-10 of Jefferson Valley Sta. (Lee Blvd near JV Mall) 2)Eng. 250 of Furnace Woods Sta. (Croton Ave near Panas HS) 3)Eng. 257 of Hollowbrook Sta. (Oregon Rd/Westbrook Dr) Location of call depends on which rig/sub-station will actually respond and what rig will be 1st due. Another point is when a ladder is called somewhere for mutual aid, this leaves the other ladder to cover our own territory.

  19. I agree, but in this case, the State Police requested us.....so we assisted them with the traffic control.
  20. Good Idea mikerabbit. Mohegan does that with the in probationary members of Mohegan with the fire apparatus. The night that they are allowed to respond to calls, each "probie" has to go through "Special Olympics". The senior members ask questions and ask the probie to get tools and show the operation of each. This works well in familiarization and correct operation. Mohegan FD VAC also does this to a small degree when training EMS members.
  21. Mohegan responded to numerous commercial and residential fire alarms, a few car accidents, and a few possible structure fires which were mostly oil burner malfunctions. I do not have an exact number of calls from the blackout. Mohegan also directed traffic at main intersections on both Rt 6 and Rt 202 in Cortlandt during the daylight hours that Thursday and Friday.
  22. Although there is no set SOP/SOG on hot bottle changes, Mohegan's FAS Team uses the SCOTT RIT PAK, which cuts down the time of swapping bottles since the bottle is already hooked up to a mask and regulator in the RIT PAK bag. Depending on the condition of the FF, the regulator can be swapped out or the entire facepiece can be removed and replaced with the mask in the RIT PAK. Once this is completed, the FF will be breathing air from the RIT PAK bottle.
  23. Its technically not even winter yet. Seems like its gonna be every weekend. We'll have to see how the rest of the winter progresses. From what I just heard, there is a Winter Storm Watch for the area and we could see 6-12 inches of snow starting Sunday afternoon, lasting through Monday afternoon. Here we go again...... :D/
