  2. MOHEGAN LAKE FIREFIGHTER HURT BATTLING BLAZE By TERRY CORCORAN THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: June 11, 2004) A volunteer firefighter was taken by STAT Flight helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla early yesterday after suffering a head injury while fighting a fire at a Gallows Hill Road residence. The firefighter, whose identity was withheld, fell and hit his head while fighting the 6:12 a.m. fire at a two-story single-family home at 16 Gallows Hill Road, said 2nd Assistant Chief George Keesler of the Mohegan Volunteer Fire Department. "He's fine and he's going to be released," Keesler said yesterday. More than 75 firefighters from Mohegan Lake, Peekskill, Continental Village and Yorktown Heights responded, said Keesler, who served as incident commander. No one else was injured. Keesler said a man who lives in the home was outside with his pet dog and cat when firefighters arrived. He could not be reached for comment yesterday. "The fire was difficult to fight because the house was down an embankment," Keesler said. "We initially did an exterior attack with three hand lines. There was heavy fire throughout half the house." The house was rendered uninhabitable. Keesler said the cause of the fire, which appeared accidental, was under investigation.
