  1. Along with your hot dogs!
  2. You're right, but all you need is an address. The truth of the matter is, most new recruits transfer out after spending a year or two in the Vern. This is actually a big problem for the MVPD and has been occuring for quite some time. In fact Mayor Ernie addressed it not so long ago in the media. He was actually trying to get these other municipalities to reimburse MT.Vernon for the monies they spend on training these new recruits that end up leaving for these other Depts. His effort obviously failed and to this day there still is a constant mass exodus from the job. He should be at least happy though other FDs. just don't take transfers, otherwise the FDMV would also be experiencing a revolving door of personnel.
  3. MT.Vernon PD is giving their test in December.
  4. I don't know of anyone doing that, but I do know of a BRAVO member making a hot dog wagon out of empties.
  5. I wish our apparatus were made out of beer cans. At least then we'd have an easier time getting a refund for them.
  6. Like I've said once before, Con Ed and NYSEG should start using their own employees like their meter readers to babysit these downed lines. Let them sit there in their little blue cars with their yellow teardrop lights instead of tying up a piece of fire apparatus with manpower that may soon be needed for a more serious incident. Especially if your Dept. is inadequately staffed and equipped to begin with.
  7. You know what I admire the most about the War Years? How humble the guys seem to have been that made probably some of the most dramatic and daring Rescues in the history of the FDNY. When you talk to these same guys today, they're just as modest about their grabs as they were at that time. In fact, most of them would have been happier to have a cold one offered to them, than a ribbon and citation. Not like guys of today though. Today's breed of ffs. are looking for a Class 1 and Media coverage for bringing someone down a drop ladder.
  8. How about wearing your pants underneath your bunkers, eliminating a $16,000 expense? Just a thought.
  9. In all fairness to Con ED, they're run no different than anyother agency, like most of our inadequately staffed FDs.. Due to their own drastic budget cuts years ago, they too no longer have an adequate number of personnel to handle the high volume of storm or any type of harsh weather related emergencies. That's the fact guys, so just tape and run.
  10. Another disadvantage of the TFTs is the cost to repair them. Not so with smooth bores.
  11. From what I've heard from experienced members in FDNY, your best bet is to use a smooth bore nozzle, especially for an upper floor job where for the most part pressures are usually fairly low even with standpipe fire pumps installed or high pressure engines supplying the standpipe. However, you should always have a fog nozzle or at least a fog tip that can be connected to your straight tip if need be, for those rare occassions where a fog pattern is needed. That's why breakaway tips for smooth bore nozzles is a must. Not only can you change the nozzle tip right at the nozzle without shutting the line down at the standpipe outlet or the engine for that matter for normal operations, but you can also add additional lenghts of hoseline if need be without having to do the same. As for standpipe bags are concerned, how about adding something as basic as door chocks to your appliance bag for the fire stairwell doors. As far as White Plains FD and FDNR are concerned with regards to all the new highrises being built, are either two of these Depts. equipped with high pressure engine cos. for supplying the standpipes of these monsters. If not, it's something to think about when specking out further engine apparatus.
  12. While on this topic, what size hoseline does your Dept. utilize off of a standpipe for its initial attack, whether its in a highrise or not? We switched over to 2-75' lenghts of 2" with smooth bores a couple of yrs. back, finally replacing the 3-50' lenghts of 13/4" with a TFT fog nozzle that use to make up our standpipe paks. FDNY uses nothing less than 21/2" line with straight tips, on all standpipe jobs, whether it be in a highrise or not. Just curious, as to what are other Depts. protocols are and also, what are other Depts. sops. with regards to using elevators to gain access to upper floors whether they're in a highrise or not?
  13. Please tell me your joking.
  14. I hope nobody even entertains these mutts playing the race card. They should be praising the cops for saving the Florida taxpayers a s$it load of time and money.
  15. Guys, I hate to rain on your parade, but I was talking to some of my friends over there and they said it's a bogus rumor. They said they're lucky if they hire anybody soon. Ya better check how credible your sources are. I hope though everyone is right and they do hire a s$itload of new guys. That would be great. There's no reason FDNR shouldn't be complying with NFPA 1710 now that they have all these new developments, especially the new high rises. I'd hate to have a top floor job in one of them during a noreaster, with only a skeleton crew working!

  17. One word. AMAZING! Kudos to those Dispatchers during those war years. You know what amazed me most out of all those transmissions guys? I only heard one 10 code ever transmitted and that was 10-75. I guess plain english does work.
  18. No, the Politicians are not the ones to be blamed. Isn't it amazing though how these same Politicians, immediately find the finances to reopen these same companies and stations that were closed prior to a fatality within their 1st due territory?
  19. You're right to a certain extent. They do step up, but only for certain Depts. unfortunately.
  20. Your quite mistaken Buff. That eng. is not identified as L-14. You can't turn an eng. into a truck by just placing a 35ft. ground ladder on it. When that's in servive it's designated as a Squad Co.
  21. What make and model is TL 11? I've heard from many FDNR members, that they've had nothing but trouble with that rig ever since they got it. It's a real shame, it seems nobody can make a decent rig anymore for any Dept. Maybe we all should just go back to ordering simple, basic apparatus. It seems the more sophisticated the manufacturers make their apparatus, the more problems we all have with them.
  22. If not every Dept. within the County is going to adapt the same 10 Codes, than plain english is just fine, especially if your either constantly giving or receiving M/A. Too this day, a 10-29 in Yonkers is a Working Fire, but a Food on the Stove for FDMV, and a 10-26 just the opposite. I can't tell you how many times YFD turned the corner on 2 wheels hearing 10-29 while on M/A in the Vern, only to find out it was nothing, and reacted in just the opposite manner when they heard a 10-26 transmitted by one of our companies, until they turned the corner to find Lucifer in the street, with our guys wondering the whole time, where the friggin cavalry was! I guess it should be expected though. We've only been providing M/A for one another for the past 36yrs. I'm sure with all the NIMS Courses being given now our Communication problems will be addressed and corrected for the Safety of all our members.
  23. Relax guys. So long as we're in compliance with NIMS everything will be O.K.
  24. In my opinion, what it really comes down to is having a well stuctured and Professional Dept. for any of the ICS/NIMS teachings to be applied. You have to have all the pieces of the puzzle before anything can work, but when your Dept. is constantly operating without the proper resources, whether it be equipment and/or manpower, including line officers for each apparattus, it becomes once again, nothing but a friggin smoke screen. If your Dept. doesn't have line officers, how can you expect them to grow and be utilized to a stronger extent within the System. The only Depts. that are able to follow these protocols from what I've seen are the big City Depts. and all the rest that once again, comply with NFPA1710. If your Dept. lacks the resources, the most important being human(manpower), to carry out the roles and responsibilities which are outlined for members within the ICS/NIMS Courses, the puzzle will never be complete.
  25. Your absolutely 100% correct and the sad thing is, if 9-11 never happened, there'd be none of these requirements in order to obtain Fed. money. In fact there'd be no Federal funding. I'd much rather my Dept. comply with NFPA 1710 than with this NIMS B/S, which ends up being nothing more than another paper trail which seems to go right out the friggin window at every incident and results in Depts. both Career and Volunteer receiving equipment that will never be used and will just collect dust, like everything in our Squad Trailer. What also kills me is how some of these NIMS courses can be taken online and members and their Dept. actually get credit for them. Are you kidding me? Yeah, this is a legitimate program!
