  1. Batt2, what's the 1st due Truck's avg. response times to 307's area in the AM vs PM time frames. I would think it seems like an eternity for 307's members on the hoseline at a job at 3:00 AM for some Truck support to arrive, especially if the 1st due Truck Co., whose already responding from more then a couple of blocks away, is out on a minor. No? Does Squad11 also run into this same problem at times? I would think the same holds true for Ladder 71, waiting for a hoseline to be stretched and charged at a job they arrive 1st to, especially if 306 or 303 is o.o.s. on a minor. Is this sometimes the case? Just wondering.
  2. Any push to get a Truck Co. out of Sta.#7 and an Eng.Co. out of Sta.#1 in the near future? Who's 1st due Ladder Co. in Sta.#7 area?
  3. No Truck Co. repsonds out of Sta.#7?
  4. If my memory serves me correct, didn't FDMV convert 2 other Macks into Foam Trucks? Whatever happened to them?
  5. I have heard of some individuals who have failed the CPAT though and still were pushed thru. Personally, I feel the CPAT should be the Agility, along with the aerial climb, and swimming for that matter.
  6. Wouldn't it make more sense for West.Cnty.Depts. to use the CPAT initially as part of the agility, instead of at the end of the Academy. Weed out those who can't pass it early on, not after 13 weeks of instruction.
  7. Like anything else, I guess it depends on a Depts. work load and maintenance policy with regards to a rigs total life cycle.
  8. While on this topic, how many career Depts. if any, require their ffs. to know how to swim, never mind be a certified diver. Personally, I think it should be part of the agility test. I know it was apart of NRFD's agility yrs. ago.
  9. Terry Hatton was a Fireman's Fireman from what I've heard and read. God Bless him and his family! He was a true hero, along with Paddy Brown and the other 341 who sacrificed their lives.
  10. As someone who's also been to countless funerals, what leaves a lasting impression in my mind is the Engine Co. bearing the members casket; his/her Company apparatus following; Bagpipers and the PD Aviation Unit Flyover. Not countless numbers of apparatus. I can see this at any parade. We're there to pay our respect, not win a trophy. Leave the $500,000 + apparatus home and take either a Dept. vehicle or your own personal vehicle, like most do wishing to pay their respect. Period.
  11. Even body bags don't wake up City Officials. Sad but true. Unfortunately FDMV has had their share of fire fatalities like my Dept. and still nothing has gotten better. In fact it's gotten worse.
  12. If conditions are that severe, I'm not wasting time climbing down some flimsy ladder if I can rappel down. It's alot quicker and safer if you ask me. If your not in a hazardous condition, then just wait it out until the mechanic arrives. That is if he's not on the hoseline or pump panel, right Seth? As far as Snorkels are concerned, they can be manually rotated out of harms way and then the booms bled down to the ground. The FDMV Administration should be more concerned with increasing their staffing and apparatus numbers, not an escape ladder. Take that money and put it towards one of these more important objectives.
  13. I heard that's why they cancelled the appointment of those 5 guys, so they could purchase the escape ladder for the TL and the 4 new generators for each station. While on that note, how many Depts. out there have emergency generators for their stations?
  14. No, because they are usually the first individuals the Fire Marshalls investigate.
  15. Who are you Clarke Kent? Rambo?
  16. Where's the emergency escape ladder like on the tower ladders?
  17. I agree gss131. Two pieces of apparatus are all that's needed. The Engine Co. for the casket and the members own company. It's a funeral procession, not a parade! Is that true, 30 miles away?
  18. Briarcliff FD, ever think about streching a 3" line with a gated Y or even a gated manifold? I know of some Depts. that use that set up. More gpm and less friction loss than a 21/2" feed. Just a thought. Sounds like things went well. Good Job!
  19. While on this topic Mr.Carroll, have any of the 5 gentlemen who were denied their appointment to the Dept. filed a similar lawsuit that you know of? It seems like they would have grounds to do so.
  20. Don't forget about the FDNY training videos they sell. Well worth the money also. Cheap, short and to the point.
  21. Is Consolidation/Regionalization really the answer for Depts.? Maybe for some, and then maybe some Depts. like FDMV should push to increase the number of ffs. on the City Charter from 143 to whatever the number would be to comply with 1710. Their own Union President stated this not too long ago. It's been at that number for quite a few yrs. now. Maybe things will change for the Vern after the audit comes out and all the wastefull spending is revealed, that could have been spent on F/P. Christ, to this day MT.Vernon still has 3 guys on a garbage truck and 2 on a fire truck. Is there something wrong with that picture? Maybe Pace University should be doing a study on all this type of wastefull spending. There's a reason the Feds are involved. Personally I feel Consolidation/Regionalization should be the last resort and not looked at as the cure all for providing adequate F/P, until all other means for providing such are exhausted by each municipality. Just because one municipality can't afford it, or so their city officials say they can't, whose word were taking as gospel, doesn't mean their neighbors can't. It's ironic also how MVPD has an astronomical budget, that surpasses by far the FD budget and nothing is said. No problems finding the revenue for the PD. MVPD even increased their staffing by what 30 guys. When it comes to the FD though they blame the tax base and lack of state aid per capita for the cutbacks. Give me a break! I'm with Chief Flynn on this one. Maybe if we All and I mean ALL make some noise, will finally be heard, instead of having the good old boy attitude and chasing the smoke to play in the sandbox with our friends. Then again that would mean we couldn't get together after the Big One to join in libations and compare war stories.
  22. City Hall could burn with half the City Officials inside and nothing would change and that's the truth. Hell didn't Uncle Ernie's house burn a few yrs. back. Then again he probably owed taxes on it, like other proerties he owned. Oh Well.
  23. Seems like business as usual for the brothers in the Vern. What a disgrace! Why anyone would even want to work there is beyond me. I'm surprised they don't have a bigger badge drain like the Cops. Or do they?
  24. 100% correct. Most times saws don't start because of a lack of maintenance and an improper fuel mixture. It's amazing how so many guys still can't get the ratio correct and they've been big truckies for yrs. It's much easier to blame the saw though, then the individual. Another fine example of human error in the fire service.
  25. Anybody want to see some real ranting where nothing is held back, check out the FDNY Rant website. It's amazing the stuff guys are allowed to post and they get away with it. No bars held there. They tear everyone up, from the Top Brass to the EEOC. Good Stuff!
