  1. And the hits just keep on coming! Go get'em boys!
  2. Whether it's a Volunteer Chief using a Department vehicle for personal use or a Career FF. using the same type of vehicle for transportation back and forth to the Station in which he works, which at times has been close to 40 miles away, it's just plain wrong and should not be allowed. There should be more control by the powers to be over this issue and strict guideliness put into play, if they're not there already. Anyone who abuses his privilege should be removed from the position. Not too long ago, an Aide to the MT.Vernon Mayor's Office was involved in an accident on a Sunday afternoon while making an illegal U turn with a City vehicle. Enough is enough already!
  3. What's the racial makeup of the NBA? I see Lawsuit!
  4. I wish the Brothers from Ct. and all others who have had their lives destroyed by this assinine Decree the best of luck. It's about time it was overturned and tossed out the window. It's just another Social Experiment of the Bleeding Heart Liberals gone wrong. It truly destroyed the "Brotherhood" of the Fire Service.
  5. When does a new guy become a FF.? When he can do his job proficiently without having to be taken by the hand and shown how to perform various tasks on every occasion. Just because someone graduates an Academy doesn't make them a FF. whether it be Career or Volunteer. There's both Career and Volunteer members with 20 yrs. in the Fire Service who still have no friggin clue of what they're doing. Bottom line ya gotta prove yourself!
  6. Water Thief/Manifold, same thing.
  7. Nothing like being told how to handle incidents by a bunch of pencil pushers that never made a hallway! Stations and apparatus closed and put out of service; inadequate manning to get the JOB done, especially getting the 1st hoseline in place or bulkheads opened but we all must follow proper terminology. GET REAL!
  8. Yeah, but ajsbear, weren't they 2 man Tillers?
  9. Can you imagine if the Special Forces Divisions of the Military (Delta Force, Navy Seals, Green Berets, Rangers) had to follow a Federal Mandated Decree. Man our National Security would really be in DANGER!
  10. Nothing like robbing Peter to pay Paul. I wonder if that will cut down on their m/a abuse?
  11. If this is the case then no civil service employee should be able to move out of the municipality in which they work. As far as knowing the area better that's also not true. I've worked with many guys who grew up in the city in which they now work and have absolutely no clue to their whereabouts when the bell strikes, even after being on the job for 15-20yrs. It's really pitiful! Then there's the guy who is the out of towner, who knows every street in the city especially his 1st due territory, because he makes it his Job to know and has a insatiable appetite for learning. He actually wants to be a FF. and loves his Job and wants to be the best he can be at it. I/M/O, Residency Requirements should be tossed out the window.
  12. Bottom line is don't lower standards and dumb down a test to reach a qouta period! Some people just don't have an interest in a certain Profession and there's nothing wrong with that. Do you think to reach a qouta a Municipality should accept citizens without a High School Diploma/GED and even a Felony Conviction for a Civil Service position? The Military doesn't. Not to mention the $$$$ that's spent on a Recruitment Drive. FDNY spends Millions of $$$$ on their Recruitment Program and still has only raised slightly the % of Minorities and Women taking the test. Not to mention they give these individuals wake up calls and offer them rides to the Testing Sites. Are these the type of individuals you want by your side in a Job? Not me. I want the "Go Getters" who sought this Profession on their own and didn't have to be coerced to take a Job to satisfy a Quota! Maybe we should start playing the same Quota game b/s with the NBA?
  13. Agree with ya 100%. The best candidate for the Job isn't always the one who resides there. Who cares where one lives choose the most qualified and that means having one Elegibility List. To hell with residency requirements! Most guys move out of town anyway, so it's meaningless.
  14. One thing a Municipality should never do is dumb down a Job by lowering Standards and instituting a grading curve to meet an Objective, plain and simple! If they do, they will regret it in the long run, GUARANTEED! Let's please stop begging people to take a test to reach a quota. You want the Job, then EARN IT! Don't be handed it, Period!
  15. What's the new Rescue going to cost? Maybe the reason they're selling their old one to help defer it's cost.
  16. The objective goal of that assinine Decree was met yrs. ago. The time has come to put it to rest once and for all! If a document was forged, the culprit should be thrown in Jail! Every dog has his day, and if it is who I think it may be, let him share a cell with Madoff!
  17. It's got to be one of the best shows on t.v. Whoever's spent time in a firehouse kitchen can relate to alot of the stuff that goes on. I know I can, along with many of my collegues who are avid fans. I bet if the show was centered around XYZ FD, many would think differently. I haven't found too many guys from Boston FD and Philly FD that dislike it. Like Chief Flynn always says QTIP guys!
  18. I still say have one List to hell with residency. Pick the best for the Job, not because they live there. Would you rather have a guy that's #1 on an nonresidency list or the person that's #100 on the in- town list? How about the individuals who lived there their whole life and just moved compared to those that have only been living in the Municipality for a few months? I believe Depts. in Ct. only have one list. That's the way to go if your looking to hire the most competent people. JMO.
  19. Don't worry Hudson, Obama will solve everything while in Office. He's all about Ethics. Just look at his recent Appointees. :
  20. I hear ya Bnechis, but are you telling me that your Dept. will send all 5 Eng.Cos. out on EMS calls leaving the rest of the City without any water supply? Don't we have an obligation to provide Fire Protection? If the City doesn't want to pay for EMS that isn't our fault. If I was a taxpayer and the 1st due Eng.Co. was out on a sprained ankle, I'd be pretty pissed off if I had a true Emergency. There comes a time where calls have to be triaged like we both agreed upon.
  21. My point exactly. I was under the impression though that many Depts. including yours, will only dispatch a certain number of Eng.Cos. on EMS calls. I believe I was once told no more then 3 out of the 5 are allowed to be out on EMS runs at one time. Just curious, cause many yrs. back I was conversing with an ER nurse, who was absolutely infuriated and was reaming me a new one because she had a fire in her house that got away because the 1st and 2nd due Engine Cos were on EMS runs and it took longer for the 3rd due Eng. Co. to arrive. She basically told me to worry about putting out fires and not her Job. She calmed down though after I bought her a drink!
  22. Talking to guys in FDMV they never ran 2 ambulances. Only one BLS bus and only a handful of guys volunteered to do it without any stipend. Most guys in FDMV during the busy yrs were not CFR's or EMT's. It wasn't required as part of their Job title like in other Depts. Your right about one thing though Bnechis, City Administrators don't care about "call volume" and "productivity". Many Depts are doing more calls now with the addition of EMS and are doing it with less manpower and equipment. Our response numbers have gone up but not our manpower or apparatus needs to meet these increases. Once again we're doing more with less. Then again, there's many a FF. who'd rather be administering O2 or applying bandaids then making a hallway or searching the floor above. I've got no problem assisting an ambulance with a Code or stabilizing a patient who was seriously injured until EMS arrives. If it's a serious injury or medical condition requiring immediate treatment then so be it. Everyone should give 100%. I got a problem though with tying up a 1/2 a million dollar piece of apparatus that's short manned to begin with for somebody who has a fever and runny nose. I personally believe all calls should be triaged with regards to an FD response. This isn't only me saying this but many a taxpaying citizen also. I've heard this issue brought up many times at City Council meetings buy residents of a Municipality. On another note, how many Engines are allowed to be out on EMS calls simultaneously before your Dept. denies a response? What's NRFD's protocol?
  23. Gotta agree with ya Goose on this one. Many guys can't stand EMS runs whose kidding who! Let's not justify our position cause call volume is down and somebody needs a hand wiping their @ss! Especially when their on a B/S call, you know the person that's been feeling sick for 5 days and decides to call you at 3:00am or has had a backache for a week. Let's not forget the "Jacobi & Meyers Whiplash" cases either. Ya know, the ones where motorists involved in an mva are all walking around prior to your arrival looking at their cracked tail light but suddenly want to be boarded after Emergency personnel arrive. I love being on these, especially when the rest of the companies get toned out for a "Job" in your first due area and your waiting 15 minutes for a bus so the Flu patient can get their taxi ride to the ER and don't have to wait outside in ERWaiting Room. I've actually heard of one Dept., from EMS personnel, where many of their guys don't even get out of their rig when an ambulance arrives first on scene. They go 10-8 immediately, so let's stop patting ourselves on the back. This is why so many of us fight for a position on the Truck Co. I guess one way to stop it though is to alternate companies on EMS runs every month, like BFD does. Sounds like a good practice. Why should guys get CFR/EMT pay and never have to step foot out the door on a call. Spread the wealth and keep members skills sharp, After all, aren't we all getting paid to do the same Job? Either that or maybe members should be rotated between apparatus. This would not only keep members sharp with their CFR/EMT skills but also all they've been taught about Firefighting. Yeah that would go over Big! Suddenly everybody would get amnesia about Pumping!
