  1. I agree also. I always hear Orange County units putting the bird on stand by just based on 1 call with no one on scene. I believe that the medevacs automatically went on stand by if the flight time was less than about 20 minutes, after that they auto launch. When you call for a medevac, and you already got the victim out of the entrapment or remote location then you might as well drive to the ER. 5 minutes to check for availability 10 minutes or more minutes to get to the LZ 20 minutes for the flight crew to prepare the victim for transport . . . Hospital 25 minutes or less when driving. The ER can stabilize them and call for a bird from there.
  2. I know from seeing and hearing chatter on the scanner that the state police in Poughkeepsie has a few cars, one is in the southern Dutchess area often, the Dutchess County Sheriff and City of Poughkeepsie has them as well. I think the town of Poughkeepsie may have 1 also but I am not positive on that. I know about the first week SP Wappingers had it installed they caught a stolen vehicle from Hyde Park and stopped it in Fishkill on Route 9D, this then led to a chase on I 84 into Orange County where the vehicle crashed.

  8. Is the door up all the way yet?
  9. There is no doubt that a utility company needs to get to a call just as fast as we do sometimes, but I don't think they want to invest any more money to these vehicles than they have to not to mention the overall risk of the response.
  10. Any truth the Empire Ambulance is not going to cover Putnam starting in May and that Transcare is coming in?

  14. Author David Halberstam killed in crash near Dumbarton Bridge The fatal crash occurred in Menlo Park, about 30 miles south of San Francisco By Connie Skipitares Mercury News Article Launched: 04/23/2007 03:48:59 PM PDT Pulitzer Prize winning author and journalist David Halberstam was killed in a three-car accident this morning in Menlo Park near the Dumbarton Bridge, the San Mateo County Coroner's Office announced. Halberstam, author of several books, died at the scene after the car in which he was a front-seat passenger was broadsided by another vehicle. The coroner's office said he died of massive internal injuries. The driver of the car that Halberstam was in was attempting to make a left turn at the intersection of Bayfront Expressway and Willow Road when it was hit by an oncoming car. The impact forced the two cars into a third car. The 73-year-old Halberstam, who either leaving a speaking engagement or going to it, was wearing a seat belt, the coroner's office said. Halberstam had spoken Saturday night at UC-Berkeley on "Turning Journalism into History." Orville Schell, the dean of Berkeley's graduate school of journalism, said in an e-mail this afternoon that Halberstam was on his way to an interview for his next book, about the Korean War, at the time of the accident. "I have spoken with David's wife in New York City, extended the condolences of the whole school and have offered to do everything that we can in this difficult time for her and their family," Schell said in his e-mail. A first-year graduate student, Kevin Jones, was in the car with Schell and sustained a punctured lung in the accident and was taken to the Stanford Medical

  17. Does Westchester County have a "Chiefs Council" of some sorts? Where the chiefs get together once a month to discuss past present and future development of the emergency services in the county? Dutchess has one, Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs and Captains meet once a month except during the summer. These meeting allow you to discuss upcoming events, which way to shape emergency services as a county for the future. Be involved in what is going to happen with things like Radio Communications. Have open communications with the legislative body and many more benefits that could help the departments, firefighters and the overall goal the citizens. If you don't have one already, it may be something to help each department come up with a good county plan. The County has to have a spine and say look we got to work together. The local departments have to give up their old ways and say yes a common radio plan is something we should have and actually use it. you know what's going on 3 or 4 departments away but how about 4th, 5th or 6th? We all have some place in our district that one day that department on the other side of the county will be assisting you at. Will they be able to talk to you? Once again, I don't know your emergency services setup except for what I read here and there, but reading things that are on this board makes it appear that everyone wants to work together.
  18. NJ Govenor Jon S. Corzine was involved in a serious injury accident on the Garden State Parkway at MM 43.5. It is being reported that the Govenor may have a femur fracture but his injuries do not appear to be life threatening. He was flown to Cooper trauma center by Southstar. At least one other person was flown from the scene. Police are searching for a red pick up truck that may have caused the accident.
  19. I would hate to do engine work on that!
  20. See in Dutchess we have a different problem, ALS units providing false location information or just decide to not pay attention to 911 because "oops we were on our channel" Always a problems somewhere, here's an idea GPS units on each bus, ALS and BLS so command says I need the location of the unit and the dispatcher says "unit 123 is at the intersection of a st and b st" No lying that way!
  21. Time to get the camera ready for some great flooding pictures. Especially if the river floods 2 - 3 feet.
