Nice rescue, thanks for the pics. I do know when I went to the prebuild on our engine we had steel wheels in the specs but we changed them to aluminum because at the time we were able to save a few hundred dollars doing so because the price of steel was up.

So, I can't use my pump operators pocket guide for dummy's? LoL

Interesting, such a short lifespan on a chassis and a box. Did you happen to catch the price on the new units?

I can only assume that because it was a "typical" (with some extra wind) fire where fire crews were doing all they could from the ground. Now in the case of the stranded hikers, after hours and hours of ground crews attempting to locate and perform the rescue they finally got choppers to come in and actually save 2 lives. These request from "upstate" NY don't happen very often at all. If they had to rescue someone in NYC I'm sure that would have been a much higher priority as it would be if a major crime took place and the PD Helo was needed to recon a crime scene instead of a structure fire. All this is my complete speculation but I do congratulate the crew from NYPD on the awesome rescue!

This incident started about 17:30, West Point attempted to locate and rescue the cadets about 19:00 they requested the Cornwall FD with their rope rescue team to assist. At about 19:30 Cornwall requested the availability of 2 choppers 1 for a hoist mission and one for transport and recon. Both declined due to strong winds (still about 30 MPH gust at ground level) This area also funnels winds through the mountains so I can't imagine it being easy to fly in. Around midnight all rope rescue teams in Orange County were placed on standby and again a check of helicopters was made. The teams were then requested to respond to West Point to assist I know Port Jervis responded and another department from western O.C. responded. This was the second rescue in this area in a week. The last one was about a mile or 2 from this one.

A story on tonights NY news 4 discussing how the Elmont FD uses the confederate flag as part of their department patch's. Apparently some of the firefighters feel it racist and decided to go to the news with the story. Just what the fire service needs more bad press.

Some pockets must have been lined building that. A commercial building with no emergency exits? Looks like they get some good flood waters under there too Bing Maps Birds Eye View Now looking at the size of the roof it would be very tricky to send the ladder over the roof for rapeling....in smoke and possible flames. There are also some windows on the northwest side of the building that hay help This would definitely need to be preplanned and practiced.

My department is buying a new pumper and our committee went to the factory for the 1st meeting. While we were there we were given a tour of most of the plant. This is a very impressive facility and they completely do most trucks on site. During the tour a few trucks were pointed out to us that were from southern NY Pleasantville's Ladder. Cab being assembled
