  1. Another news paper is now a subscription paper. I noticed tonight that LoHud.com now lets you read a few free articles before you have to pay for a subscription. It's only a matter of time before the rest go that way.
  2. But you can't out run the radio! [q]NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- A 25-year-old Charlton, N.Y., man was arrested Wednesday after state troopers allegedly clocked him traveling between 150 and 170 miles per hour southbound between Ravena and New Paltz on the New York State Thruway. According to state police, a motorcycle operated by Nikkolaus V. McCarthy was clocked traveling 166 mph on the Thruway at about 12:45 p.m. in the village of Ravena. 7. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victims, the Larchmont Police Department who lost thier Captain and friend and all the responders who were at the horrific incident. Guys if you were at the fire don't be scared to go to a debriefing. Don't leave the pain locked inside.
  8. I know this discussion is primarily for Westchester, but for those that are not aware in the last 2 weeks there have been major alarms nearby. 2 weeks ago Ulster county had a massive wind driven brush fire that destroyed about 40 structures bringing in manpower from that county, Sullivan, Orange & Dutchess to get the fire under control. This past weekend in Lock Sheldrake (Sullivan) they had a former hotel now condo's go up bringing in manpower & equipment from Sullivan, Orange, Ulster and possibly more about 40 departments I believe. It would really be interesting to know from those departments how the response, staging and the overall incident was handled. I must also note that in the county's were the fires occurred, they basically have 1 PSAP / Dispatch center (and I believe a back up.) Now you have very small dispatch centers coordinating with multiple county's worth of responding and covering equipment and still getting the other calls in the respective county's out. As mentioned, there is no need to have multiple PSAP's. A well organized dispatch center with a limited number of frequencies that are all interpretable can do the job and give immediate answers to the responders instead of playing telephone with multiple departments and possibly start passing on bad information on is the best way. This also saves the taxpayers money by avoiding duplication of service. Just my opinion.
  9. No more Social Security checks in the mail starting next year http://www.dailyfreeman.com/articles/2012/04/16/news/doc4f8b5623a9dd2689853267.txt "WASHINGTON (AP) — Starting next year, the check will no longer be in the mail for millions of people who receive Social Security and other government benefits. The federal government, which issues 73 million payments a month, is phasing out paper checks for all benefit programs, requiring people to get payments electronically, either through direct deposit or a debit card for those without a bank account." ----------------------------------- Progress is good, moving to a digital world is what the future holds however, this also means roughly 73 MILLION pieces of mail will no longer be handled by the POST OFFICE! a service that is already struggling due to less mail volume will suffer even more when this happens. Yes this will save the federal government money and will save trees but it also adds unemployment to the economy as more and more needs to be trimmed from the postal service.

  13. Ulster, Dutchess County officials issue burn ban reminder http://www.dailyfree...25993451443.txt Officials in Ulster and Dutchess counties are asking residents to not let a little rain over the weekend divert them from abiding by state’s outdoor burn ban for brush and tree limbs. The caution comes as the peak fire season has emergency crews staying ready but hoping that they won’t be needed.

  19. The amount of time this bridge will be closed to be fixed aka giant band aid is a long time for its users and neighborhoods BUT now this means it will have to happen AGAIN when they decide to totally replace it. BUT THIS IS NEW YORK! Why do things the right way the first time.
  20. Manufacturers will build you anything you want (as long as it's possible) just make sure you open your wallet WIDE because it will cost you. Commercialal cabs are more "cookie cutter" than customs. You have limited spacavailablele and little chance of changing the seating configuration. You also have minimal crash protection with zero rollover protection. Custom cabs offer smaller turning radius, more backseat cab configurations, more room to store some of your small everyday tools TIG, meters, hand lighetc ect. Greater crash protection with good rollover protection availabilitylity of airbags in covering all windows. You also can have more head room. Both have pros and cons, but Custom is the way to go. Just My opinion.
  21. Excellent story on a horrible tradgedy. This event changed a lot that day from safety standards to response procedures 40 years is like 1 day to survivors: Rockland train-school bus crash killed 5, rewrote safety laws

  24. I have often provided a copy of the photo's to the department in question. Many departments will then put some of them on their website to help promote the work they do. I was told by a Beacon PO once while taking pictures of a police vehicle involved mva where the officer waobviouslyly driving faster than what was safe to stop taking pictures or I would be arrested and the camera confiscated. I only stopped because I was wearing one of my departments shirts and didn't want to reflecnegativelyly on my department. Bottom line is stay in the designatcivilianlian area" and remember your camera has a zoom lens and you shouldn't have any problems.
