where and when did he say that? We had these people protesting gay marriage here in Burlington and UVM earlier this year, we had 10-15 times the number of counter-protestors as they had actually protestors. They came off less right-wing christian soldier and more of as a senile grandmas who wandered out of the home... I like the idea of playing music over them and setting up barriers human or otherwise between the event and the protestors.... I believe fully in freedom of speech and the first amendment but as it has been said before here, it must be used responsibly and correctly...shouting hate at grieving veterans and their families is not responsible use of the rights instilled in every American by the very people who they are protesting. One only hopes that the correct actions are taken to win this appeal for the family and that this group maybe dissolved by any means needed to bring about that conclusion. Or maybe use our second amendment right to remind them the consequences of speaking before you think.

What I was trying to say, albeit at 3AM was the this might cause for public sector employees to agree with their supervisors not on a factual level that is truly beneficial to the public. What happens when some one in a leadership position disagrees with what the current administration of where ever it may be? Is that person supposed to just sit by and let bad decisions or policies be made or are they supposed to do what is in the publics best interest? The implications of this ruling suggest that those who are informed to an issue will have a more difficult time raising and challenging the status quo that exists within whatever organization or administration they belong too. This ruling can be interpreted in a manor that can imply that as a public employee, one does not have the ability to raise issue with policy and decision and that decent from that policy is subversion. Personally I find this very disturbing because in a way it prevents a series of checks and balances that should exist within every government and every level. While checks and balances does more apply to different branches of government such as judicial, executive and legislative etc, in this instance it can refer to the idea that you may not know that best or right thing to do every time so you have a series of individuals or entities to check and balance your decisions and actions for the best interest of the public that we all serve. I find it incredulous that this chief was suspended for speaking the truth, despite the obvious lack of true freedom of speech. It seems like someone in the local governmental administration was trying to punish this guy for making them look bad. In what regards is it considered speaking as "private citizen" verse "government employee"? Could anything that you learned while at work, that is later openly presented and discussed be considered acting as a government employee? Such as discussing a consolidation study or mutual aid plans or hazmat/SOD response, training, staffing etc? If so then much of what is written here is then not protected by the first amendment. That is why I said that this is very disturbing, it is because the implications of this ruling create a grey area of free speech that is seems is loosely defined, enforced and discussed. Anyone here that decides to post information that can be even considered "acting" as a "public official" runs the risk of censorship, legal action and negative implications. I find that to be very disturbing. Scary aint it.

if using the rational that you employed who should get trained in the basics first, a 35 year old man with a wife and kids that works 9-5 out of district and can not leave for alarms or an 16-18 year old who lives in town, works in town or goes to school in town. The 35 year old man has the life experience, maturity and physical ability but a lack of time. The 16-18 your old kid has all the time in the world but is temporarily lacking in life experience, maturity and physical ability. Which is better, I do not know, I do not claim to know but compare basic characteristics, if you look time available, your 16-18 year old kid has far few obligations, far less of a time constraint and is easily the future of the department, provided they stay around long enough. How do you who decides who gets trained when the only thing separating candidates is date of birth. That is provided that all available candidates can make the commitment, have no constraints and are virtually identical, except for age of course.

Didn't White Plains and Yonkers do something very similar to this. There are pictures of the Yonkers shops conversions on LFD171's website but are there any pictures anywhere of the White Plains shops conversion. This seems like the best option in these cash strapped time to take an already paid for piece of apparatus and convert it to your needs, no need to buy a thousands of dollars new one when a converted old one will work fine.

Despite what this is officially called, this is an apparent act of domestic terrorism. This is similar in nature to events that took place in Miami after 9/11, Fort Hood, Oklahoma City and various others. We must read his words carefully. While they maybe the crazed rant of a delusional man blaming the IRS and the government as a whole for his problems, his words can not be simply ignored. They in fact represent a growing dissatisfaction and resentment of the current political system and government in place in Washington currently. This is neither a democratic nor republican issue. It is an issue regarding America as a whole. The growing populist, tea party movement in this country is an example of the bipartisan reaction to American policy dating back to Ronald Reagan and the fall of the Soviet Union. The populist anger that is being expressed in this country currently is and will continue to be a force to reckoned with. Whether you agree with this fellow or not, his actions were extreme, but despite that fact he represents the culmination of various forces and circumstances. We can not forget that there have been those before him and there will continue to be those who follow him in these reckless and extreme actions. It is our jobs as Americans to fix the problems with our great country, to right the wrongs that have been made, fix the problems that have occurred, prevent things like this from happening again and to restore our firm and unyielding footing at the top of the global political and power structure. But we can not do it alone, we must act as one, one nation, not one or two or three parties, but as one nation to correct the mess that we have made. This fellow was crazy, no doubt in my mind, but his points are not as crazy, it is our job now to stop the madness. When we do this we insure security for all Americans from this kind of anger and allow for economic growth and development to prosper for all Americans to do with it what they wish.

According to this article in the New York Times...Salvatore Cassano will be named the new FDNY Commissioner to replace the retiring Scopetta. According to the article Cassano is a 40 year veteran of the department who has served in various command functions for many years including Chief of the Department as well as being cited for bravery multiple times. Any thoughts from the brothers on this news... http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/21/cassano-to-be-named-new-fire-commissioner-2/?hp
