When were these photos taken?

saw it there today as well. Looks real sharp. Regarding its size, its not that its overly wide or long, we have all seen wider and longer. It is just ridiculously tall, I mean, they were working on it on the bay apron and not actually in the shop at Metrocom because it did not look like it would fit inside. Its a massive rig, physically imposing due to its height.

Who cares it just a show. And I am not a member of the FDNY but I agree it is an embarrassment to the FDNY and the fire service in general.

looks great but is still naked as far as im concerned. Say it outside the firehouse today driving by, looks even better in person. Obviously Somers likes their other sutphen if they got this one. Good luck to you with it.

Never Forget is just a word throw around but every class I have taken in the fire service has mentioned in one form or another the Waldbaums fire on 8/2/78. We may not have learned from their lessons but we certainly have not forgotten. Never Forget their lessons Rest In Peace

second that.

what alert are you referring to?

Thats just not true. Wireless headsets have been on the market for some time. Look in any major fire service publication. I am willing to guarantee you that at least one of this months major fire service publications will have an advertisement for wireless headsets from Firecom. I have seen them in FireHouse Magazine for about a year or so at least. http://www.firecom.com/products/wireless-headsets/ Also, whats the matter with using the mic, if he has a question, then he should not be moving in the first place. The current trend in placement of backup camera's (side, rear etc) is a way bigger step in safely backing up fire apparatus then any corded headset will ever be.
-
Agreed. Portable are easier, cheaper and we are all familiar with their use. At least we are not still using the bell/buzzer system.
-
Wireless would be 1000x better. That way you are not tethered to the rig, the cords only allow you to get so far from the rig. In a large piece of apparatus like the ladder shown, being farther back where the LCC can see you is a much better idea than being 5 feet tops from the back of the rig where they may or may not be able to see you. Just my $0.02.

How will this merger affect members on the ground? What changes will we as first responders see on a day to day basis in the field if this merger takes place?

Captain, we all grieve for the loss of the brothers fallen in CT, VA and elsewhere but we can not forget that life goes on. We must constantly learn from the events, tragedy and lessons of actions both past and present. We can not stop learning just because it hurts too much, or it is too soon. I choose not to "chill on this thread" because we too must learn from this video as if it were a NIOSH report. We must take the lessons learned and apply them to actions both present and future. The individuals in the video this thread is based on risked their safety to extinguish what, a tractor-trailer truck cab with limited life-safety except those individuals who choose to unnecessarily risk their own safety. That sir contains a lesson if you ask me. That lesson is risk a little to save a little, risk a lot to save a lot. Those pictured in this video risked a lot to save something that was going to the dump the second that fire started. I am sorry if this offended you, but we can not let the lessons of this video escape us.

Doesn't matter to me if they are firefighters or law enforcement officers they did a piss poor job of approaching that fire. In fact it looks like both sides were in above their head on this one. What if the engine block was on fire and the officers with their lack of PPE were showered with sparks? Doesn't matter if they are cross-trained or not, last time I checked skin and a duty uniform were not burn proof. In fact the firefighter is just as much to blame as the cops, re-watch the video, using the booster on a V12 tractor-trailer cab, allowing for opposing handlines operated by improperly outfitted individuals and also failure to use PPE when overhauling the engine compartment are huge no-nos in most places; and the firefighter should have known that a stopped all operations until all proper and necessary safety functions are in place. I also did not see one person with a SCBA on, that cancer thing that we all keep dying of, I wonder where it comes from, maybe the dozens of known carcinogens released during a car fire. Like I said above, regardless of training or what-not. Both sides of the coin, FD and PD both endangered their health and lives by choosing to take short cuts and not following proper procedure. They are very lucky that no one was injured.

Thank you, I know and realize that. I am well aware of the protections afforded to employees in the public and private sector having worked in both and having family who represents clients involved in employee-employer disputes.
-
so the second you F-up at your real job or as an EMT we can fire you? The city should have never settled, like mentioned above, it follows an ill-advised trend. I am glad the officers were at least acquitted of criminal charges. I can only hope they keep their jobs.

Great Video. Nice Find. Hats off as always to our dispatchers.

Yes, while I agree with what you say, has that capability been eliminated and not diminished? I agree that if these boats with all of the life rafts are the only thing that keep the airports in compliance with Part 139 then the airports are no longer in compliance. However, what if they are not the only thing? What I am saying is how do we know that capability has not been shifted to say an agreement with surrounding marine vessels that they will assist during a water rescue situation similar to the impromptu situation that occurred in the Hudson or something similar. All I am saying is that we do not know if they are complying with the regulation in some other way than some magic bullet boat.
