  1. I am surprised that this was not posted here today but earlier today, as I am sure some of you are aware, US Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta was awarded this nations highest military commendation for bravery and valor, The Medal of Honor. He is the first living recipient of this award since the Vietnam War. I would just like to take the time right here and right now to thank SSGT Giunta for his heroic actions on 10/25/2007. It is said that the Medal of Honor is not won, it is earned.... Medal of Honor Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty: Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, on October 25, 2007. While conducting a patrol as team leader with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment, Specialist Giunta and his team were navigating through harsh terrain when they were ambushed by a well-armed and well-coordinated insurgent force. While under heavy enemy fire, Specialist Giunta immediately sprinted towards cover and engaged the enemy. Seeing that his squad leader had fallen and believing that he had been injured, Specialist Giunta exposed himself to withering enemy fire and raced towards his squad leader, helped him to cover, and administered medical aid. While administering first aid, enemy fire struck Specialist Giunta’s body armor and his secondary weapon. Without regard to the ongoing fire, Specialist Giunta engaged the enemy before prepping and throwing grenades, using the explosions for cover in order to conceal his position. Attempting to reach additional wounded fellow soldiers who were separated from the squad, Specialist Giunta and his team encountered a barrage of enemy fire that forced them to the ground. The team continued forward and upon reaching the wounded soldiers, Specialist Giunta realized that another soldier was still separated from the element. Specialist Giunta then advanced forward on his own initiative. As he crested the top of a hill, he observed two insurgents carrying away an American soldier. He immediately engaged the enemy, killing one and wounding the other. Upon reaching the wounded soldier, he began to provide medical aid, as his squad caught up and provided security. Specialist Giunta’s unwavering courage, selflessness, and decisive leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon’s ability to defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American soldier from the enemy. Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta’s extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment, and the United States Army. In SSGT Giunta's own words..."And although this is so positive, I would give this back in a second to have my friends with me right now." http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/11/16/obama.medal.of.honor/index.html?hpt=C1
  2. Interesting, great photos. PW? Pressurized water?
  3. What exactly are the capabilities of the YPD K9 unit? Perp search, narcotics detection? Say I potentially have a person missing in the woods thrown from a rollover at 3:30AM on a Tuesday evening, will I be able to call YPD and have one of their dogs come out? How about on a Saturday?
  4. Congrats Lisa, everyone knows no one works harder than you. Just because it is not always obvious, your work is always appreciated Lisa and dont forget that.
  5. NYTimes reporting that the maker of 4loko will no longer be shipping it to NY.
  6. lohud article on the brigade. http://www.lohud.com/article/20101114/NEWS01/11140384/Indian-Point-operators-trained-as-fire-brigade
  7. Yep, I do all I can to avoid NYC, especially the down town area from about the week before thanksgiving to the week after new years. That way I avoid the 1,000,000 tourists in the city turning what is normally a very hectic city into a complete mess for weeks.
  8. The law is clear only one blue front, back, side, roof etc.
  9. Why dont you just check the NYS emergency vehicle VTL. http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/pdf/srgvat.pdf Section 375. Equipment. 41. Colored and flashing lights. The provisions of this subdivision shall govern the affixing and display of lights on vehicles, other than those lights required by law. 1. No light, other than a white light, and no revolving rotating, flashing, oscillating or constantly moving white shall be affixed to, or displayed on any vehicle except as prescribed herein. 2. Red lights and certain white lights. One or more red or combination red and white lights or white light which must be revolving, rotating, flashing or oscillating or constantly moving light, may be affixed to an authorized emergency vehicle, and such lights may be displayed on an authorized emergency vehicle when such vehicle is engaged in an emergency operation, and upon a fire vehicle while returning from an alarm of fire or other emergency. It is ambiguous, a chief I spoke to said yes it is legal to have blue and white in NYS, but this makes that statement seem untrue. Not that any police officer or trooper I have ever passed responding to the FD in my POV has cared.
  10. I agree but the lohud article states: "The unit’s use has plummeted in recent years, she said, from 94 calls in 2007 to 42 in 2008, 26 in 2009 and 13 through August." http://yorktown.lohudblogs.com/2010/11/10/siegels-plan-to-cut-yorktowns-k9-unit-draws-fire-from-pba/

This incident occurred when the homemade raft the victims were sailing to France on was caught in a storm and dashed upon the rocks. Luckily they were able to escape into the cave where they were eventually pulled to safety by the rescuers. The actions of the boaters were called extremely irresponsible by the Charlotte Assistant Fire Chief, Dick St. George, the firefighters father.
  12. Nice photos. Looks like a good job done by all. The damage to the cab is incredible, I have seen Tractor Trailers roll but never with that much damage. What was it hauling?
  13. I think you mean ladder 21. Ladder 20 is the 1996 Sutphen TDA and it is still in service; Ladder 21, the 1976 Seagrave 100ft rear mount was taken out of service in 2008 and listed for sale on auctionsinternational.com. According lfd171's fotki page, VMFD has placed an order for a Spartan/Smeal 100ft TL for delivery spring 2011 however.
  14. If I was betting man my guess would be Crimson, Ferrara, Smeal and Pierce as at least 4 of the bids with the actual contract going to Pierce or Ferrara but like you said, only time will tell.
  15. All department related internet postings should be approved first by the chief or Board of Directors/Commissioners and potentially the departments/districts legal advisor. This includes department websites, facebook, myspace, youtube, FF close calls, Vent-Enter-Search, EMT-Bravo etc...
  16. T-Town patch article about the new ladder 220" wheel base and 105' ladder for 800k. Designed by East-West. http://tarrytown.patch.com/articles/tarrytown-trustees-approve-specs-for-new-ladder-truck
  17. Honestly I dont think that is true. You can buy 4loko in any gas station, bodega or corner store, really anywhere beer or soda is sold. That is why we see so many ABC compliance checks at these locations. Vodka on the other hand is only purchased at licensed distributors like liquor stores. As any teenager will tell you it is easier to get beer, cigarettes etc from a bodega then liquor from a liquor store simply due to clerk attentiveness and motivation. Its a matter of being cheap, honestly 6 beers from between $2-5 is not bad at all in this economy, it so just happens that this product in particular is being marketed to young people and college students.
  18. still wont let me delete repeat posts.
  19. Board wont update as to posts since the start to the end of the technical problems. I.E. posts made in threads dont show up as being made on the main page but are up to date in the thread itself.
  20. The difference is that this is being specifically marketed to college kids and young adults. A red bull and vodka is something you get in a bar, somewhere that is not usually available to someone who would be drinking a 4 loko.
  21. Good. Finally justice can be served. Having read some of the accounts of the trial proceeding and events of the crime, anything less than the death penalty for this evil man would have been too good. Lets only hope the appeals process does not take too long and that justice can be served to the Petit family and the co-defendant also guilty...
  22. Its not a myth. The problem lies in that the "teenagers" you mention have so much energy from the caffine that they do not realize exactly how intoxicated they actually are so they end up ingesting more alcohol than their system can tolerate and process well and they end up overly intoxicated or alcohol poisoned. I have had to deal with this situation in my own personal life outside of EMS when this has happened to friends. Quite simply this drink causes one to misjudge their tolerance and limits regarding alcohol leading to highly negative and detrimental consequences (not unlike drinking alcohol outright, only in this case your body is falsely convinced it can go longer with the caffine).
  23. Stuff is bad news. If you do the math each 23.5oz can has 6 beers and 4 cups of coffee in each one. Its all the rage, best advice to anyone drinking according to my roommate who is a fan is to moderate, know your limits and drink plenty of water. Best advice to EMS is get ready for more EDPs, intoxs and drunk injuries because the craze has yet to break.
  24. Does anyone know who is hiring and how many? Is it Rye and Peekskill like its says in the announcement or are there other districts hiring as well?
