  1. Wear it like you earned it, not given to you two weeks before parade season so your company could all look the same to try to win a few more trophies. Depending on the location and nature of me wearing my class As, my bell cap (or cover, depending on who I am talking to) is either on the head like it should be if I was marching, under my arm, brim and badge out facing the front or back on the rig/in the house after I have put it to full use during whatever function I was required to wear it. My class As might not fit totally right, might be a little hot and uncomfortable and might only be brought out for funerals and parades but damned if I am going to disrespect 85+ years of my departments and 200+ years of fire service history.
  2. Any thoughts on buying used until economic or social climates change and buying new is an option?
  3. Great Shots. What a day you must have had...how many miles did you cover in your tri-state journey?
  4. My suggestion, forget thinking about responding in your POV, I am willing to bet you live far enough away where you wont make to the scene or the house in time for any of the work I think you are looking for. Try to see which departments in the area roster duty crews and try to see if you can get one on that best fits your life style and schedule. That way you don't have to worry about driving to the scene or the house and missing the first line in or the first due. You want to help, thats good, but if you live 10-20 minutes away from the fire house on a good day, at Friday during rush hour you will never be able to make a run. Where I go to school I joined the Rescue Squad in one of the towns that rosters duty crews, that way when a call comes in A. we are all in the house and can respond immediately B. I don't have to drive in all weather to make the run C. I don't have to drive from my apartment a town over to make the rig D. It gives me a better chance to train and practice during the off time considering tours last a minimum of 12 hours E. It lets me have a life and still do what I want to do, as a full time college student my weekdays and nights are packed full, rostering in house on the weekends gives me the flexibility I need while still maintains my commitments to school and the squad. What ever you decide/find, good luck.
  5. Don't you mean type II, I was always told type I is Medic 3, type II is Medic 7 and type III is a commercial van chassis with the medical box attached.

  7. Thanks for the info...will this a traditional wetdown ceremony or more of our new found "dry"down?
  8. Nice rig, just curious what was done to it to make it lower to fit into the house?

  10. Or at least the towns Animal Control Officer...
  11. While there is obviously no good side to look on, one glimmer of hope is the woman whose three daughters were killed is now pregnant and expecting another child. Hopefully she can find some peace in having a little one to look after again.
  12. Any way we can get some more shots of your rig down there. Stay Safe Brother and keep the e-journal coming.
  13. Citation: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4068/4707222058_cd38a9e035.jpg BHFD members can fill in the gaps/corrections and provide some construction pictures but if I remember from the construction, essentially everything from the bottom of the dormer windows and above is a false roof. There is actually another roof above the one visible and is built with a truss construction. Mind you this is an entire strip mall, home to a Panera Bread, Shopright, a liquor store, Marshalls shoe, deli, nail salon, etc etc with a false roof, providing from what I could tell at the time, the mother of all void spaces.
  14. I found this interesting article on Time.com. Essentially Hofstra's Medical School is training all new medical students to be EMT's during their first two years. This initiative is to increase doctor/patient communication as well as to have new doctors understand the world of pre-hospital medicine. There is one interesting quote in the article I would like to share: "The student is actually providing a service. Patients being attended to by EMTs by definition need help and, while EMTs cannot provide more than limited medical interventions, in the settings in which they work, they actually are more capable than physicians, as any honest doctor who has stopped at an accident scene will tell you,"-UCSF's Dr. Cooke http://healthland.time.com/2011/07/22/trial-by-fire-training-medical-school-grads-as-emts/
  15. Very emotional and moving. Which engine will they be lowering and displaying? RIP Truck 3 and the 343. NEVER FORGET.
  16. They are covers for the goggles that come installed on most Cairns model helmets. Since the lens have a propensity to get scratched during normal everyday activities where they are not needed, many people elect to purchase a goggle lens cover from a manufacturer like ESS to preserve the life span and clarity of the goggles. When you need the goggles you just slip the cover to the side, flip the goggles over your helmet and tighten to your face and go to work.
  17. it was replaced and it is being sold from what I understand.
  18. Any new info on the new HAZMAT rig? Is it going to be replacing the HM-1 rig or supplement it? Will the current HM-1 become a spare?
  19. Read this story the other day, simply wonderful. Just goes to show you what a big difference little (or big) things can make in someones life. Things like this make me proud providing EMS in my community back home in NY and my adopted community in VT.
  20. Nice command vehicle. Does this truck respond to alarms regularly or is primarily used in other functions that the DC is required to attend? The only reason I ask is usually Deputy Chief is a term used for Former Chiefs or chiefs with other roles like inspection/code enforcement while an assistant chief is simply a chief below the actual chief of the department. It seems that this vehicle is used in an assistant chiefs role according to my lingo (but maybe not yours).
  21. Heading to the Smithsonian.
  22. Looks good, what is the tank/pump capacity of the truck and how much hose does it carry?
  23. I could be wrong but it seems like that would be for the new accountability system that FDNY is implementing with RFIDs. Great shots btw.
  24. Looks like NYPD is getting the Chevy Volt as well. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/07/nypd-to-get-first-chevy-volt-police-cars-/1
  25. Looks like a traffic safety vest. Total shame regarding the loss of the rig. It actually looks like Rescue 35 however, a 2005 KME Predator Rescue/Pumper. The only reason why I say this is there is a bar on the grille of R35 while E265 has a Q mechanical siren in that same spot.
